The myth of Bhutala Pandya or Apostle Bartholomew associated with The Ancient Coastal port town of Barkur

History is a subject always fascinates most of us, though many of us, so I am, not qualified enough to analyze the same, scientifically. One such topic, we failed to understand is the legend of Jain King Bhutala Pandya, always referred, as the nobleman who first ruled from Barkur throne, as early as 78 AD, hence the name Barkur and a claim that his descendents ruled the place later for almost 300 long years! It is equally important to note here, except a book referring to this dynasty, which looks more like imaginative and exaggerative, to narrate a story that may or may not, really taken place almost 2000 years earlier, since the book written was in 14th century. No other historical evidence, structure, is yet to be traced at Barkur, as most of the monuments, one can find in the place, the most ancient one, date back to 9th Century AD and others thereafter……

An Organisation to Complete 25 Years....

DOWN MEMORY LANE…..formation years of St. Peter’s Association, Barkur – Mumbai 1983 – 1988. A flashback…..!

An organization to complete twenty five years in the service of Barkurians in Mumbai is not a small achievement and ‘St. Peters Association Barkur – Mumbai’, stand tall among all contemporaries to cross this historical mile stone.

A tribute to all the Priests served in our Barkur Parish 150 Years.

Barkur parish is the oldest in the Varado, next only to Milagres Cathedral Kallianapur, and was served by the Priests from here from 1854 – 1861 it is said, every week and Rev. Fr. Caetao Joao Fernandes, used to offer Holy Mass in the thatched prayer house, built on the same location, where stands the present Church.

We Barkur-online Team call back the contributions and services of each and every one of them, for the past 150 odd years, to make the Barkur a better place to live, pray and prosper together. Many of them are in heavenly abode and few of them are at the evening of their lives and most of them are still serving in different parts of the world in various capacities……

It is our intention and sincere efforts as well to give more details, in the event of our visitors wish to have them, in phases in coming days…..Please send in your feedback to us to include missing details wherever it rightly deserved……..

Morvine Quadras, A star is in the making

That nobleman at the Bennekudru Temple annual festival, in December 1992, rightly predicted now some 20 years ago, when he saw a boy at his tender age of just five, dancing to the Hindi Film tunes on that pleasant evening, that ‘one day this boy will bring glory to his parents and this place, and reach to the heights of name and fame…...’ That ‘cash prize’ from his hands is the beginning of the saga of a great achievements, innumerable gifts, certificates and trophies, now found place in the showcases in his home at Barkur and Muscat, startles any visitor at once, that too…..  at this young age of just 25……!!

BARKUR-ONLINE, your home town at a cursor-y glance..

Perhaps Uncle James Fernandes believed in that home is where the heart is. For me it’s more rooted – emotionally, literally and figuratively and for the generation preceding both of us, for youngsters like Austin and Franklyn it’s an ironical, the home is where their hard disc or laptop is…….!

Ten years, rather 10 years and 10 months gone by, since Kishore Gonsalves, the ‘showman of Barkur’, ventured something unique, for his hometown, a common platform barkuronline a web portal uniting Global Barkurians!!

Haladi Shrinivasa Shetty

Nicknamed, rather popularly known as ‘Vajpayee of Kundapur’, Halady Srinivas Shetty is a born leader. Till the other day he was our respected MLA. His leadership qualities were well known from his school and college days. In these days of corrupted political sphere, HSS is rare breed of assertive leader who will not compromise on values, righteousness and self respect.

About some four years back we wrote an article in Barkur-on-line pages, on the eve of Assembly elections, titled ‘Its JP Hegde vs. HS Shetty in Kundapur’ A man who scored over a personality like J.P.Hegde by 19,000 plus popular votes, and romped home for the consecutive third time, to be an MLA, definitely had something unique, to his credit.

The Visit of His Excellency the Bishop Rt. Rev. Dr. Henry D'Souza - to Muscat

A special joyful moment to Barkurians in Oman –

The Visit of His Excellency the Bishop Rt. Rev. Dr. Henry D’Souza – to Muscat……….

Adieus to Fr. Aranha and Warm welcome to Fr. Alban D'Souza.

‘Barkur parish’ having a colorful history of almost 150 long years, had the privilege to be served by great priests in the past, who were mainly responsible to keep the Catholic faith live, responded to the needy……….especially till the last decade, provided best of the elementary education through its famous Mary knoll School in the locality.

Of course each and every household grateful to all of them who served in the past….., now in heavenly abode,  served here few years ago and now serving elsewhere, also those great priests rose to great heights in recognition and authority… but we are fortunate ones to be served by them once upon a time….!
