Hall of Famers of Yester Barkur

When Barkur.com was opened in December 2001, we introduced this site using one of this following line: " This is just a beginning towards a larger objective, to include Barkurians in all walks of life, culture, and faith in this mainstream…."  We did a fairly good job in presenting a few living ones in our 'Personality of the Month', POM column.  While continuing this POM column, now, we want to depict the Barkurians who are no more with us physically, but mere memories to some or unwritten history to many others.

"Famous ones need not be Great and Great ones may not be Famous. Scores of such 'great ones' lived in our Barkur - few left relics and legacies behind, like the Educational Institutions, Hospitals, Roads, Bridges, Dams, and Houses of God, etc.  These people lived a saintly life in the service of society, not craving for fame, name, or fortune for themselves," observes Archibald Furtado of Nagarmut.

"We, the beneficiaries, have an obligation to express gratitude and show respect to all those personalities, posthumously of course, for their sacrifices in helping to shape the present Barkur, and for improving the lifestyles of Barkurians," says James Fernandes, of Moodahadu Kudru.

With these views in mind, and in response to many of our readers' desire to know and learn from such personalities, for the benefit and knowledge of the present and future generations, Barkuronline is delighted to open a new column named, "Hall of Famers of Yester Barkur," to present and honor a few personalities and their praiseworthy contribution to Barkur.

Folks, please share your candid memories, comments, or kudos.  These will be presented in our widely read popular Sandesh column.  Feel free to recommend your worthy choices, along with some bio-data including the legacy they left behind, and we will accommodate them in this new column to the our best of ability.  Who knows, these might wind up in a book form, Gods-willing! Thank you for your continued support.

Dr. Shreenivasa Hebbar

Barkuronline.com is proud to present, yet another Hall of Famer, Dr. Srinivasa Hebbar:

The prominent Dr. Srinivasa Hebbar was born in Airodi, in the year 1901, to Mr. Narashima Hebbar and Mrs. Rajamma, of Airody, Sastan.  Mr. Narashima Hebbar was a rich and highly respected landlord in Airody.

His Primary education was in Shanthinikethana School in Koorady.   He completed his SSLC, High school degree in the Board High School, Kundapoor.   He obtained his college degree from Mangalore Government College, Mangalore, upon which he went to Madras, and joined the then prestigious college called Presidency Medical College.   He obtained his license to practice medicine and perform surgeries, Licentiate of Medicine and Surgery, L.M & S.

He did get a job in the Navy, then under the British Rule.  For reasons unknown to us, he gave up this Navy job, or I should say a very lucrative job.  However, he opted to work for the poor, because, somehow he had awful sympathy and love for the poor.   He established himself in several places, Bhyandoor, Belthangadi, Kadaba, Mulki, and Barkur, as a physician and surgeon.  Believe, me I have seen him work as nurse, a compounder/Pharmacist, lab technician, a consultant, and even providing food to the patients, if necessary.  There were no clerks to receive and record the patient information, there were no nurses to clean and dress the wounds, there were no technicians to draw or test the blood, or pharmacist to weigh, mix, and prepare oral medications.  Most of such jobs were to be done by the Doctor himself.  And yet, he preferred to stay in the rural government hospitals, primarily because, he wanted to serve the poor.  It’s not the religious people alone serve the poor!

He served in Barkur hospital for several years, even in his advanced age.   Following the principles of Gandhiji, he served his fellow man, by involving himself actively in the ‘Education Society of Barkur, who was the Founder  of this society.  He was the treasurer of this Society from 1946 to 1947.   For 15 years he was the correspondent of this society, serving, contacting, interacting, the far away people from Barkur, like Saligrama, Mandarthi, Kokkarne, using ox drawn/run carts, and encouraging the children to avail themselves to high school education, thus help these folks become self supporting.   Such charitable deeds must not go unnoticed.    He went to several little known, poor and remote villages, helping them medically, and trying to uplift their self image and encouraging them to ‘help themselves’ and thus useful citizens.    He opened several satellite hospital/maternity wards, sometimes putting money from his own pocket for want of Government or donated funds, and such zeal to help the downtrodden deserves kudos my friends.

Dr. Hebbar was married twice.  His first wife Lakshmi (D/O M.M. Ural, Advocate) had two children, Devidas Hebbar  and Susheela Hebbar.  Devidas became a Textile Engineer who retired and got settled at Kundapur.  Susheela stayed unmarried and lived with her brother at Kundapur.  Devidas Hebbar has a son Prashanth Hebbar (B.E.) who is a Software Engineer, Settled at North Carolina, USA.

Dr. Hebbar’s first wife Lakshmi expired in 1943.  So he married again Narayani alias Bhadre,  daughter of P. Krishna Bhat , Polali, Gurupura. They were blessed with three sons, Seetharama Hebbar married to Vinaya,  working in Karnataka Bank, in Ahmadabad; Krishna Hebbar married to Geetha,  settled the family house at Barkur; and  Narasimha Hebbar  who died 1978.    Seetharam and Vinaya have three children, Kathyayini Hebbar a BDS student, Gayathri Hebbar a student Comp Engg., and Surabhi  Hebbar a student in 9th Std.

Seetharama Hebbar, Narayani Amma and Krishna Hebbar

Krishna Hebbar who takes care of his mother , is a well known personality in Barkur.  He has two children.  He is a active member of Barkur Education Society.  He is the controller of the Guru Narasima Devasthana of Saligrama.  He runs a popular medical shop in Airody on their ancestral (Muulasthana) property, near Chethana High School, near Mabhukal. His elder son Mr.Shreenivasa Hebbar is studying B.Pharma at Nitte and daughter Rajashree is doing her P.U.C. at National Junior College, Barkur.

Mr. Krishna Hebbar  is known for his helpful nature, and has gained tremendous popularity in this neighborhood, like Sastan, Saligrama, and Barkur, thus maintaining the renowned name of his father Dr. Hebbar.  May his soul rest in peace.
