Obituary

Priya Mendonca (34 Years), Barkur / Moodubelle / Dubai, daughter of George and Juliana D’Lima, Nagar Mutt, Barkur., passed away on Friday August 31, 2012 morning due to brief illness at Manipal Hospital. She was married to Herald Mendonca, Moodubelle, and  mother of Hazel Mendonca,   and the family was staying at Dubai  and were on vacation at the native place. She was the member of EB (Emirates Barkurians) which was formed recently in UAE.

Funeral was held  at Church of  St. Lawrence , Moodubelle, on Friday, August 31, after the mass at 4.00 PM.

(Note: Emirates Barkurians calls off Monthi Festh celebrations scheduled on 7th September at Emirates Residency to mark the respects to the departed soul and a mass is offered on 7th September at 0615 pm at St.Mary' Church Dubai.)

Hot Chix Fast Food Opens Second Outlet at KMC Food Court

Within a span of a year, the second outlet of Hot Chix, franchisee owned  by Dolphy Mascarenhas was inaugurated at the KMC Food Court, Manipal on Tuesday August 28.

Glen Dias of Mandavi Real Estate and Developers inaugurated the outlet.Jerry Vincent Dias, President,Udupi Builders’ Association and promoter, Mandavi Builders,  Dr H S Ballal, Pro Chancellor, Manipal University, Gregory Lobo, managing partner, Hot Chix Restaurants, film actress Sanjana,Saritha Mascarenhas and Dolphy Mascarenhas, Directory of D S Foods, Manipal, were present. 

“HOT CHIX” as the name suggests has the fun quotient that is mischievous, fun, joyful and all that you want to be. While the name suggests that they are hot and happening and  are much more than that, they are spicy, yummy and juicy. That is how their patrons have been describing their products from the last 5 years.

In the year 2007, It all started in Bangalore, India.  Gregory Lobo a chef by profession was trying out a special recipe he had created with a blend of herbs and seasonings for the fried chicken for a party he had organized and all his friends after tasting the chicken at the party echoed in unison ”HOT CHIX”, Now, all those present were more than happy to be a part of the wonderful session that they called themselves Chicito’s as a honorary membership to the club of HOT CHIX.

Franchisee owner Dolphy Mascarenhas hailing from Kudru, Barkur, is the eldest son of late Robert and Benedicta Mascarenhas , graduated in Hotel management from American Institute of Hotel Management, Mumbai. After short stint at Ramada Group of hotels in Mumbai, Dolphy moved on the assignments offshore with P & O cruises (Carnival UK) as Restaurant Manager  and gained a lot of experience in the hospitality industry for more than 18 years. He  has joined hands with Chef Lobo with this unique franchise for first time in undivided Dakshina Kannada District and now within a span of a year they are spreading their wings to KMC Food Court.

Veg burgers, chicken burgers, variety of chicken dishes, combo offers, combo meals, rice meals, munchies and many other kinds of food items are available at the outlet.

Adarsh Dental Clinic inaugurated in new premises

The new premises of Adarsh Dental Clinic was inaugurated at Holy Family Church Complex in Brahmavar here on Wednesday August 15.

Earlier the clinic was functioning at Akashvani circle in Brahmavar for about 6 years.Mathew C Ninan, principal of Little Rock Indian School, Brahmavar inaugurated the new premises.

Fr Dominic Vegas, priest of Holy Family Church Brahmavar and Fr Valerian Mendonca, parish priest of Barkur Church blessed the new premises.

“It is a great honour for any educational institution if a student succeeds in his life”, said Mathew C Ninan after inaugurating the new premises.

Mathew said that he was proud of his student Dr Manoj who started the clinic six years back which is now being shifted to a bigger space. He is sure that soon he will open a dental hospital in Brahmavar, he stated.

Dr Manoj welcomed, Herald D’Souza compered and Dr Deepa proposed the vote of thanks.

Roshan Lobo continues the winning spree

Roshan Lobo from Barkur, won gold medal in Goa state power lifting competition and awarded the title "Strong man of Goa".  

For Roshan Gabriel Lobo, son of Charles Lobo and Philomena Lobo from Barkur winning these titles is like child’s play as he has won already many medals like Gold Medal at Maharastra State level Weight Lifting Competitions held at Akola, Maharastra. 

It may be recalled here that, Roshan   represented India in the Asian Power Lifting Championship held at the Ulan Bator, capital of Mangolia, where candidates from 18 Asian countries participated. 

Lobo, a past student of Milagres College, Kallianpur, was chosen by the Asian Power Lifting Association, after securing first place at the national level competition organized by the Indian Power Lifting Association. He has also been selected for the National Level Soft Ball Competition to play for Maharashtra. 

He had won silver medals in the weight lifting competitions held during the year 2008-09 in Goa and also in 2004-05 at the Mangalore University level, in Mulki. He has also represented Udupi

district in weight lifting competitions and won medals. He had taken part in the state level ball badminton competition too on behalf of Udupi district. 

A degree holder in commerce, Roshan Lobo works for Murzello Engineering Services Pvt. Ltd, at Rathnagiri Goa.Though he has won many national level accolades for his achievements, still remains down to earth and humble as he was always was.

Baaro Baaro Maleraaya…. Longing for rains at Barkur

Rains are playing hide and seek this year at Barkur and surroundings. Agriculturists for Paddy cultivation heavily dependent on rains are in dilemma. Year ago by this time Barkur had witnessed three floods, but this year so far there is no flood, jus once last week the river had slightly over flown. The patron’s feast or the feast of St.Peter, notoriously known as Neer habba, due to guaranteed floods on the day went with a dry spell this year on June 29^th.

Last year exactly this time from 17^th to 20^th of July, Barkur was witnessing biggest flood in previous 15 years, which lasted for four long days, trapping the people of Kudrus to the confines of their home, without power supply, spinning the local Village Panchayath into action, sending rescue boats to check on the civilians living in islands.

But this year the situation is just the opposite with enough rainfall to start the proper agricultural activities. And if this situation continues the same way then Barkur may plunge into a situation close to draught, which was never heard before.  Despite the abundant rains last year Barkur faced a severe shortage of drinking water from the beginning of summer itself, forcing the Village Panchayath to supply water through Water Tankers.

With the shortfall of rain this year ground water levels are likely to drop lower than before, and with water shortage going to worsen,  one  can only hope and pray that the local authorities are better prepared for the worst.

Yuva Samavesha and Vanamahothsava by ICYM Barkur

Parish level youth conference “Yuva Samavesh 2012” was held recently for the youngsters of Barkur.  Hilda Rodrigues was invited as the resource person for this conference organized by the ICYM Barkur.

Rev Fr Valerian Mendonca, Parish Priest and Director of ICYM presided over the inaugural function at the parish hall Souharda. Eugine Quadros, Vice President of Parish Council and Hilda Rodrigues were the guests.

ICYM President Austin D’Almeida and Secretary Jasmine Andrade were present on the dais. Farrel Dais anchored the inaugural ceremony.

Hilda Rodrigues conducted the session on the topic of Love and friendship. After the session Dr Manoj D'lima conducted interactive games for the youth. About 50 youngsters including the students of 10^th standard, members of YCS and ICYM actively participated in the seminar.

On the same day morning, ICYM Barkur conducted Vanamahotsava, celebration of planting trees.

Rev Fr Valerian Mendonca, Director of the unit addressed the gathering regarding the importance of the occassion. Rev Fr Tony Andrade who is on visit from US was also present. Both the priests, along with  Eugine Quadros, Vice President of Parish Council , Youth ICYM President Austin D’Almeida and Secretary Jasmine Andrade planted the saplings. Lowzin ereira anchored the program. Saplings were distributed to the parishioners during the occasion.
