Small town boy makes it big in the Crib Competition

Our visitors marveled at the creativity shown by this budding marine engineer as we flashed the pictures of the first prize winning crib at the Barkur Parish level  Crib Competition.  Now we hear that the same crib won first place at the Medimix Crib Contest conducted by Dorcas Market Makers Ltd., Chennai, makers of Medimix ayurvedic soap.

Sydney John Lewis, son of Mrs. Gretta and Mr. Staney Lewis, Bennekudru won the prestigious first place in the said contest and received a Gold pendant by the company representatives.  Sydney is a Mechanical Engineering Degree holder from Manipal Institute of Technology, recently graduated as a Marine Engineer from Bombay MERI and now selected at the Essar Shipping Company. There held an important face-to-face Discussion Session on Saturday, 21st February, at Brahmmavar, at 5.00 p.m, with Police Commissioner of Udupi District Mr. S.Murugan and Circle Inspector Mr. Vidya Shankar and other Officials of Local Police Station and the general public. Lion regional President Retd. Principal Mr. B.Seetarama Shetty presided over the programme.

 The changing role of Police as friend, peacekeeper and its role as law enforcing body of the locality to ensure harmony were focused and the general public put up various questions. All appreciated the healthy debate.

Catholic Board of Education Mangalore is running various Educational Institutions and half a dozen First Grade Colleges in Mangalore Diocese. In its accreditation conducted on 31st January 2004, the Central UGC (University Grant Commission) NAAC, awarded “B+ Grade Certificate” to Milagres College Kallianpur. The Management, Staff, Old Students and Students community deserve to be congratulated more so as this is the First College to be conferred with such an honour.


Augustine Arunraj Dias

Augustine Arun Dias the most familiar name in Sports / Games field in the Districts of D.K and Udupi, and Coorg, was honored at Rajeev Gandhi Maidan Hejamadi, during Junior Athletics Meet. It is appropriate to recall here that Mr. Dias was awarded with title “Outstanding Physical Director” of Mangalore University.

Lastly, Pintham Derebail, Valerian Pinto, breathed his last at Mumbai on Wednesday18th February 2004. He was 55. A superb actor of class mannerisms on stage and a gifted voice is no more, who acted in several plays both at Mumbai and Mangalore over the last 30 years.

 There was a special bond of friendship of this great artist with Barkurians. He also acted in Shri Henry D’Silva’s ‘Mogachi Deswatt’ and’ Kazara Upranth’, when SPCYA –(now St. Peter’s Association – Barkur – Mumbai), presented these dramas at Mumbai in 1986/1986, at St Mary’s Hall Mazagaon. BVT  And Hosala Village, a success story in the  making

Bharatiya Vikas Trust (BVT), has successfully executed its plans for health, water and rain water harvesting and ground water conservation at Hosala village Barkur with the help from The Science and Technology Department of central government.

Central government sanctioned  Rs. 6.73 lakhs , Jilla Panchayath Rs.3.8 lakhs and the users  contributed Rs. 2 lakhs for this pilot project.

This is one of the ten experimental projects all over the country and received accolades recently at the evaluating seminar held at Pondicheri.

2 tanks of 5000 liters each for collecting the rain water are constructed on the rooftops of the houses of Jyothi and Vatsala and another 2 0f 10000 liters each are constructed at the residences of Kabir and Nirmala with modern Ferro-Cement Technology , which drastically reduces the cost of construction.

Sludge and debris are cleared from one third of the Chowlikeri Temple pond and rest will be removed as part of the project stretched over 3 years. National Pre University College and Ranganakeri Higher Primary School are benefited by the Rooftop rain water collection projects.  Many seminars were conducted to spread the awareness of rain water harvesting and ground water conservation among the people of the Hosala village.

Managing trustee of BVT Mr. K.M. Udupa informed that plans are drawn to have Information Center and a Library for the benefit of the villagers and solar lighting for all the houses with aid of the local people and donations from the local associations.

The office bearers of the trust , Mr. Seetharam Shetty, Mrs. Mallika Hegde, Mr. Shantharam Rao, Dr. Kalkur, Ms. Laxmi Bai and Ms. Kshama Aradhya were present at the meeting held recently.

 

SOME DEVELOPMENTS AT BARKUR…………….

There were unusual guests at Temple town Barkur last week. It was host to some 365 strong troupes of Sages, touring South India by walk belonging to famous Nath Panth, from North India. Senior citizens of the town including Shri B.Shantaram Shetty, Shri Y.Ganapathy Kamath, and the Parish Priest of St. Peters Church, Fr. Sylvester D’Souza, were there to offer them cordial welcome, at Sri Pancha-lingeshwara Temple. They will proceed to Kadri Yogeeshvara Mutt, Mangalore for the religious ceremony, by walk.

To preserve the historical venues and sites at the historical Barker, the Govt. supported Wall Building process completed last week. It gives a better look to the Shila Stambha and Jain Basadis at Hosala. In yet another development in the same direction, today a Historical Studies Cell got inaugurated at Cross-land College, Brahmmavar. It is rightly named after great research Historian and former Principal of SMS College Brahmmavar Late Dr. Vasantha Shetty.

His brother Dr Jagdeesh Shetty and Prof. Guru Murthy are inculcating curiosity and enthusiasm among the interested intellectuals to study and research forgotten local History.

Bharth Vikas Trust had its evaluation Session and Mr. K.M. Udupa, Dr. Kalkur; Rtd Principal B.Seetharam Shetty attended the meeting at Hosala. The central Government, Zilla Parishat contributed 6.73 and 3.8 lacs Rupees respectively for various public utility and health projects. More focus will be on Water conservation, cleanliness and health of the local people.

The veteran turns 80....

Sunday 15th February was a remarkable day in the town of Barkur, as Mr. V.L.Roche celebrating his 80th    birth day with his children Alka, Madhu & Pradeep in the presence of relatives, friends and parishioners of Barkur, around 750 guests at fort Nandaraj, their residence. The programme started with a welcome song by the students of National Primary school, Hanehalli. The parish priest of St Peter’s Church, Barkur Fr Sylvester,  Dr Edward Lobo, Director of Manasa ( Special school for the children with special needs), Mr. K.M.Udupa, Ex Syndicate Bank manager, member of Bharatiya Vikas Trust, were the chief guests. They wished many more fruitful  years for Mr. Roche and Mr. Roche remembered his past years, thanked each and every one present. The function ended with the delicious food and Janaganamana by the tiny tots of Barkur, compred aptly by  Mr. Sudhakar Rao, the head master of N.P.School, Hanehalli.

At the Govt. First Grade College, ‘Planning Forum’ Economics Department, got inaugurated in the hands of Mr Ajith Hegde, Udupi. Principal Mr Rajashekhar Hebbar presided over the programme held at College Auditorium.

Rotary Club Governor Mr Soorya Prakash at Prabhu Ganesh Hall Kallianpur honoured outstanding and renowned Teachers - Head Master Mr.Devraj Shetty and Barkurian Mr Arun Dias, working for Milagres College, as Physical Director.

A ‘Conclave of Consumers’ was held at Gurudeva Bhuvan, Barkur, to spread awareness and to make known the rights and privileges of Consumers to avoid exploitation. Mr Ravindranath Shanbhag, of Basrur, Balake-darara Vedike was the main speaker and resource person on this occasion, spoke with examples at the Seminar and appreciated the yeomen services of Billava Association of Shivagiri.

During the recently held Meeting of head of Privately Managed Educational Institutions of Udupi Region, the HM of Rukmini Shedthi Memorial School Mr Chandrasekhar Shetty was chosen as Vice President of the union. Also, Mr Sudhakar Rao, HM of Hanehalli National Primary School was appointed as one of the advisors.

Gratitude –An ex-student's attitude....

SMS Pre University college Brahmavar, received 15 computers from an ex-student of the college Mr. Harish Kumar Shety, President , Binary Systems Private Limited , Bangalore. He promised to gift another 35 to make them 50.

The computers were handed over to the correspondents Rev. Fr. Rambhan Dr. N.J. Thomas on the annual day celebration. Mr. Harish Kumar’s mother Mrs. Birthi Kasthuri Shetty, Mr. U. L. Bhat, Principal, Mrs. Shantha Sagri, Vice Principal were present at the occasion.

Milagres college website launched

The website for Milagres College and the Church , Kallainpur was inaugurated recently by Dr. H. Shantharam. He gave a call to all the colleges to adopt latest scientific developments.

Head of the department of Physics, Dr. Gerald Pinto briefed about the website. Principal Rev. Fr. Fred Mascarenhas welcomed and correspondent Rev. Fr. Xavier Pinto presided over the function. Pro. N. M. Hegde compeered the function and Pro. G.S. Ramachandra proposed the vote of thanks.

Rotary quiz competition, Little Rock School wins the accolades.

Rotary Udupi recently organised its 15th year Rotary Quiz Competition, under the sponsorship of Corporation Bank  and more than 450 students from the 12 schools of the Udupi Taluk took part in the same.  Little Rock Indian School, Brahmavar bagged the Best School Award.

Mr. Ganapathi Bhat, Principal MGM College Manipal inaugurated the competitions and Rotarian Janardan Pai welcomed the participants and explained the motive behind the competitions. President Mr. P. H. Bhat presided over the function and Secretary Mr. S. R. Achar proposed the vote of thanks.

Silver Jubilee Celebration at Ranganakeri

Durgaparameshwari Private Higher Primary School, Ranaganakeri celebrated its Silver Jubilee recently. Founded in the year 1978 by Late Kushal Shetty through his Anitha Educational Institutes, the school has come a long way with the help of generous donors said Field Educational Officer, Mr. Vitthaldas Bannanje, inaugurating the Permanent Grant Plank. Prof. H.V. Narasimha Moorthi of Bhandarkar’s College Kundapur presided over the function. Mr. B. Staney Pais , Ex-President , Rotary , Barkur distributed the prizes. He was facilitated by the correspondent of the school Mr. B. Shantharam Shetty as he was instrumental in providing a well and toilet facilities to the school at a cost of  Rs.2.16 lakh under Rotary Matching Grant Project. Other donors were also facilitated at the same time.

Mr. B. Seetharam Shetty, Secretary, Anitha Educational Institutes, welcomed the gathering and Head Master Mr. K. Ganesh Vokuda read out the report.
