RUPPNNIM’- BY SHRI KISHORE GONSALVES – A REVIEW

By P.Archibald Furtado, Muscat.

All of us read various books for different reasons and the taste mostly depends on our age. Of course, the basic reason for reading may be deriving pleasure out of it. In this direction, one of the familiar forms of literature, which attracts masses, is a ‘short story’. Other day, I was fortunate get a copy of Ruppnnim, written by Kishore Gonsalves of Barkur. As usual, being a weekend, with a couple of drinks, it took about two long hours, to read all the ten stories at one stretch. Ten different subjects, knitted in ten stories – something for every age group!! From romance to tragic sentiments, humorous situations to hard to believe incidents!!! Especially two or three of them touched my heart viz ‘Ronie Purshavn ani Jezu’, ‘Ashi Ek Mogachi Kani’ and ‘Pappchen Cycle’

I firmly believe in Konkani literature, new wave in short stories started by this awakened group consisting of - Kishore, Ronie Olivera, Maurice D’Sa, Clarence, Stan Ageira..… etc to mention a few, and I wish, their works should reach to masses. One of my Lecturer Dr. T.S. Rajgopal used to tell us ‘whatever is written is only a printed sheet of paper until someone reads it and react to it ,and then only it becomes literature’.

The characters, setting of emotional basic ideas and themes, as well as the simple style followed in each story is unique one and it reminds me of O.Henry’s short stories like ‘Witches Loaves’ or ‘The Last Leaf’ and at times ‘Malgudi days’ of R.K Narayan.

Most of us encounter the situations rather faces and characteristics similar to those chosen by Kishore in his Ruppnnim, in our life, but it needs a writers pen, a poets heart and an artists eye to stitch into a story and I congratulate him, a up-coming realistic writer, in his effort and wish great works in our mother tongue Konkani in years to come!!!.
