THE HISTORY OF CYM BARKUR,  DOWN THE YEARS………..

Dear Friends,

During the inauguration of Silver Jubilee Year of CYM Barkur, in Dec.2001, few people young and elderly alike, obviously shown curiosity to know about this unit in detail. I have discussed the matter, with few seniors and present members, and expected them to write about this in our web site.

Since it is almost two months now, and no signs of anything appearing in ‘Amchen Barkur ICYM segment’ this is only an attempt to awaken those, who associated themselves with this CYM and part and parcel of it, for fairly long time, to spend little time, in the general interest of those, who seriously want to know about this organisation especially during the course of this Silver Jubilee Year.

No doubt, this is definitely difficult an assignment, to compile data, but still fascinating one. In other words, it may not be an exaggeration /or wrong, if I write here, - the history of CYM means the events took place in the Barkur Church itself, for the last quarter of a century - And so on my part too, herein will try to put few distinct incidents / events and achievements of CYM of Barkur,( preferably,  I will try to cover first three sections only) in six parts:

1] Formation of CYM and early two years under the director Rev. Fr. Henry D’Souza and Sr Lucretia 1976-77-78 [Lawrence A.Sequeira and Veera Monthiero]

2] Advent of Rev. Fr. Patrick Rodrigues to Barkur and the ‘Golden age of CYM Barkur’ 1979-80-81-82 [Ivan M. Rebello and John F.Gonsalves]

3] The CYM of Barkur under the guidance of Rev. Fr. J.N.Lobo and Fr. Apolinaris Crasto and the historical Decennial Year Celebrations – 1983-1987 – also with a special focus on SPCYA and SPA – Bombay. [Ivan R. Gonsalves,  Vincent D’Almeida and Eric L.Carvalho]

4] Arrival of Rev. Fr. Mark D’Sa as Vicar and CYM under his guidance and of Fr.James D’Souza, and Fr. Reginald Pinto – 1987 – 1992. [Herbert Menezes and Kishore Gonsalves]

5] Rev. Fr. Benjamin D’Souza as Vicar and Director of CYM – 1993- 2000.

[Allan Crasto and Eric Soans]

6] ICYM today – in the hands of Mr. Herald D’Souza and Mrs Noreen Lobo and spiritual director Rev. Fr. Sylvester D’Souza – 2001-2002. [Lancer Fernandes and Divya Furtado]

It may please be noted that, since I don’t have any written records in my custody – this is only down to my memory lane extracts - and there is every possibility of an error on my part as far as dates etc. are concerned. More than 400 people passed through this Association and every possibility of omissions of few important figures and facts. Hence you are expected to bring such things to the notice of the Host of this Web-site Mr Kishore Gonsalves and me immediately for necessary rectifications and updating.

Over and above to give more legitimacy and accuracy to these reports, we have chosen few names mentioned above, and others also, to contribute their feelings further in respective compartments in coming weeks and deserved articles surely find a place in our - Silver Jubilee Memorial Souvenir – 1976 - 2002.

Hoping  your co-operation and suggestions too, in this matter, and promising to send the first part by next week-end……..!

Further, I would like to suggest Mr Kishore Gonsalves, the Secretary – ICYM – SJOC, to put on web, the beautiful report and plans; he placed before the public on Silver Jubilee Year inauguration day at Barkur on 19/12/2001.

On behalf of CYM Ex-Members Committee,
