Dear Readers,                                                                                     Since the parent unit ICYM - Barkur  is celebrating its Silver Jubilee this year, we feel it appropriate to focus on, one among  few of its offshoots, and this is just an effort at this direction……                                     Amchen Barkur Team.

A PURPOSEFUL AND FRUITFUL EXISTENCE

ST. PETER’S ASSOCIATION BARKUR - MUMBAI

One among very few Associations, with which, once we too were associated,  and very close to our heart is St. Peter’s Association Barkur – Mumbai.

It has  completed 14 years of purposeful existence in the service of our community and celebrated its 15th Installation Day on 17th April 2002, and this is, both an occasion to feel proud and express our gratitude to present as well as past members who were responsible to make, most of its objectives and dreams, into a reality.

Though its roots go, as deep as, pre-independence era,  that is 1938, when there existed St. Peter’s Barkurian’s Association, at Bombay, and it was the youngsters initiative in the year 1983 – 84, who thought of reviving this vanishing ‘Barkurian spirit’ as a group in Bombay, subsequently, resulted in establishing, St. Peter’s Catholic Youth Association Barkur – Bombay, under the able leadership of Lawrence A.Sequeira, in the year 1985.

This SPCYA   envisaged   the present set up, to combine the experience and goodwill of well settled elders, spirit of co-operation of middle aged with a determined objective of doing what they found difficult to do when they were very young, and most importantly the organisational skill and the talents of the well trained youth of Barkur in the CYM, collectively conceived the idea of broad based St.Peter’s Association, what it is  today.

During my last visit to native place in Dec.2001, got an opportunity to meet few office bearers and extremely happy to note the progress it has made and the name, fame and impression it created, in the metropolis of Bombay!!.

Truly, you the President, Henry Roche, Gen. Secretary, Ivan M.Rebello, all senior Office Bearers, the Members of Managing Committee, all members of today and yesterday kept the Barkurian flag flying very high and bright!!

One more thing makes me feel very proud and happy is, you have cultivated an exemplary goodwill gesture of recognising the services and involvement of past members - as Henry Roche reminded me, when I casually, asked how is SPA? - Don’t forget, you were the first ‘Secretary’ of this unit!! What a great, rare, proud feeling.. !.

I do admit openly, my contribution was very little while comparing with the sacrifices, of most of you and many others !!!.

Being a part of, and involved in it for fairly long time, all of us truly have very high regards towards this organisation, but we feel it appropriate to mention here, the observation of outsiders, for instance, for people like Shri Henry D’Silva Suratkal, [the President of Kanarite Youth Association,] who sincerely expressed, the banner of present SPA stand for collective and cohesive leadership… time bound quality socio-cultural public programmes and more importantly the commitment for social work……. And counted as one among very few popular groups in Bombay today….. An example for selfless co-operation and working together……”

Most of us, heard about this Association very often, both in Barkur and that among Mumbai  Mangalorean  Community. And perhaps the only platform to organise public programmes of, especially most of  the popular Konkani artists and other language cultural groups as well.

Here in, I will not elaborate the achievements of SPA in detail, but if not make mention of following few things for information of those who may not know about it at all, the very purpose writing this article will be futile.

  1. Youth Hostel with modern facilities at Naigaon stands first, and caters the needs of economically poor youngsters not only of Barkur but also other parishes on request.
  2. Helping hand to most of the ‘Educational Institutions at Barkur’ is the best way of building a better tomorrow.
  3. Career guidance and encouragement to Youth of the Barkur Parish, coming to Mumbai in search better prospects…
  4. Monetary Contribution - to all major socio-cultural causes / needs of Barkur Church in particular and of the Mangalorean Society in general.

     v.            Support to Konkani art and culture by sponsoring the stage programmes, Drama, musical evenings, of well known artists of Konkani theatre, - at least one function every year and honouring well-known writers and artists.

  1. Another very important achievement – SPA is home away from home, a parallel Barkur parish in Mumbai and today more active families linked directly or indirectly, to Barkur are settled here, compared to parent parish itself - find time to unite at one place for ‘annual get together’ and ‘entertainment programmes’!

This organisation has grown up to be a ‘matured group’ and its members also playing an significant role in other socio-economic fields and mention may be made of its former President Felix Barnes is Director of Model Co-operative Bank. On this occasion we wish its members all the very best, to do even better, in years to come, in the service of community and  a needy fellow Barkurian.

Before concluding, let me put on record that, great people put in their time, labour and resources, to form, continue and make it so familiar today, in Bombay, and this web-site ‘Amchen Barkur’ always welcome contributions from -  readers as well as previous and present office bearers and members, so as to enable us, to recognise, respect and focus them, in coming days…

With regards,

On behalf of CYM – Barkur Ex-Member’s Committee,
