VILLAGE TO COLLEGE Scholarship Fund Dear Friends, A few years ago, I began a small scholarship fund back in India, Barkur, where I was born to provide funds for the cost of tuition and books to deserving students from villages to attend a nearby college. So far 24 students have received help, 2 students graduated in 2001, and 14 students are currently attending the college. These students are chosen from families who are too poor financially to send their children to college. This movement is spreading to some nearby villages and there is a much greater financial need to help a few bright and promising students in the coming years. Rationale for starting this Village to College Fund When I completed my High School, although I was selected to join a far away Jesuit College since there was no college nearby at the time, my parents refused to send me because they could not afford to at all. I was forced to seek employment to support the family and only several years later did I complete my BS, MS and PhD. With this in mind, I began to assist needy students to attend college soon after High School. Currently $25- $50 (Rs 1000 -2000) are given annually to each student to complete a 2 year pre-college course and 3 years of college to obtain a degree. A $500- $1000, one time donation is adequate to support one or 2 students each year continuously from the annual 7-8% interest obtained in India alone. I hope you will kindly consider supporting this worthy cause in the coming years. Any amount, small or large, will be useful and the name and photograph of the recipient student will be sent annually to each donor. Also a full Scholarship when given to a student, will be named after the donor as well. I will really appreciate and remain grateful particularly the needy students for your kind generosity. Thank You, Sincerely, Gabriel Fernandes, PhD Professor of Medicine, Microbiology, and Physiology University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio San Antonio, TX 78229-3900 President Association of Scientists of Indian Origin in America (ASIOA)
