DAY CELEBRATIONS AT BARKUR We are very much happy to publish a brief report on the celebrations on this auspicious day in Barkur. Barkur Panchayath : The
President of Barkur Panchayath Mr. Devadas Hemmady hoisted the
tricolor National Flag. Mr. B. Shantharam Shetty was the distinguished
guest. Other dignitaries who were present on the occasion include Mr.
Panchashrari Kerematta, Secretary, Barkur Panchayat. Hanehalli Panchayath
: Mr.
Mahabaleshwar Kalkur senior panchayath member hoisted the
National flag at 8.30 a.m. during a colorful ceremony. St. Peter's Church: A grand
function was arranged at church compound wherein Mr. Richard Carvalho,
Vice President, St. Peter's Association (Barkur), Mumbai
hoisted the national flag. Rev. Gration D'Souza spoke on the occasion.
Rev Fr Sylvester, Mr. Gerald Gonsalves, Mr. Dolphi D'Lima, Vice
President, Barkur Panchayat were present.
National Junior College: Principal Mr. Venkatrama Aithal hoisted the flag followed by variety entertainment by the students. Mary knoll high school: Vice
President of Rotary Club, Barkur Mr. Kasim Saheb hoisted the tricolor
flag and the distinguished guests include Mr. Shekar Bangera,
President, P. T. A. and Sr Liliana, Superior, I. H. M. Convent, Barkur
Mary knoll Higher Primary SchoolMr.
Gerald Gonzales, Vice President, Barkur Church hoisted the national
flag, Mr. Richard Carvalho & Mr. Peter Furtado representatives of
S.P.A., Mumbai, Mr. Kishore Gonsalves and Mr. Stroiney Pais were the
guests. Uniforms (free) were distributed to the students.
Zilla Panchayat Hr. Pry. School, Hosala: Mr.
Nithayananda Kamath, President of Old Students' Assn. hoisted the national flag. Mrs. Geetha Shambhu Poojary, Zilla
Panchayat member, Mr. Nagayya Shetty, Mr. Surendra Shetty, Mr. Devadas,
Mr. Dolphy D'Lima were present on the occasion. Zilla Panchayat Hr. Pry School, Kachur: Mr.
Shantharam Shetty, Ex-member of Taluk Panchayat hoisted the national
flag, Mr. Jayaram Shetty and Mr. Shankara Poojary were the guests. Hanehalli Hr. Pry. School, Hanehalli: Mr.
Annappa Hegde, Correspondant hoisted the national flag Mr. Srinivas
Shettigar, President Betterment Committee and Mr. B. M. Krishna were
the guests. Heradi Hr. Pry. School, Heradi : Mr. V.
L. Roche, President, Barkur Education Society hoisted the national
flag. Mr. Bhojaraj Shetty, Correspondant, Mr. Chandra Shetty
were present on the
occasion. Members of Atula Yuvaka Mandala were actively
involved themselves in the programme. Almost in all schools,
education scholarships, study materials were distributed to the
students and talks were given on freedom movement followed by variety
entertainment by the students . Rotary Club, Barkur : Mr.
Staney Pais, President hoisted the national flag. Various competitions
were conducted on the occasion to the public. Members
of N.S.S. of S.M.S. College, Brahmavar have cleaned the KOTEHADI
and the surrounding areas of Kote (Fort), Barkur and I. C. Y. M. members have cleaned the Church compound in their
respective
"Shramadan" programmes.

Narayan , District Governor , Rotary District 3180, will inaugurate the conference at 9 AM ,Prof. Udyavara Madhava Acharya retired Principal PPC ,Udupi & Dr. Sudhakar Nambiar, District Assistant Governor ,rotary District 3180 are the chief guests for the occasion . After the registration and inauguration ,there will be a training session from 10.45 AM to 12.15 PM followed by the cultural programme. Barkur mainly, Maryknoll Hr. Primary School , Barkur ; Durgaparameshwari
Hr. Primary School, Rangankeri ,National
Higher Primary school Hanehalli :NJC Barkur .The Rotary distributed
the Saplings from the forest department to the students of this
schools They
also honored the top scoring students
in SSLC & 7th standard .All
together 53 students were honored .Sri Barkur Sudakar Shetty ,Managing
Director Vasudha Chemicals Mumbai was the chief guest for the occasion Rotary
Barkur also distributed Uniforms to deserving students of National Hr.
Primary School Hanehalli. The Director for Community services of
Rotary, Rotarian Srinivasa Shettigar, and the fellow ship chairman B. M.
Krishna distributed the uniforms to 90 students Rotary
Barkur is doing a commendable job since the inception last year and receiving

Sasthan on 11/08/2002.Mr. John Furtado , from Bennekudru,
Barkur started the Butterfly Ice Creams at Sasthan in the year
1985 , after working abroad for 15 years and within a short span
of time lead the Butterfly Ice creams as one of the most sought
after brand in South Canara District. Very helpful in nature he was
very popular with youth groups specially the CYM of Mangalore

Self-Employment
Camp at Barkur The I C Y M along with Catholic Sabha has arranged a
special camp at Mary knoll high school, Barkur on Sunday, 4th August
2002. The camp was arranged in collaboration with RUDSET. The seminar was inaugurated by Bro. Gration. During the first session Dr. Nagarathna Shastry of Barkur P H Center gave information about first aid and how to act in case of medical emergencies. Dr P. V. Bhandary of "Parivarthana", Udupi who was instrumental in giving new life to hundreds of alcoholic patients narrated the consequences of prolonged use of alcohol, gutka, pan parag , smoking etc and stressed the need for building a healthy society. Mr. Ganesh Hegde, Managing Director of RUDSET then
took the session on self employment, various types of training
programmes Rudset is arranging for the unemployed youth. ABOUT RUDSET : Rudset (Rural Development and Self Employment
Training Centre) is an institution sponsored by Syndicate Bank and
Canara Bank co-ordinated by Shri Veerendra Hegde of Dharmasthala has 8
branches all over Karnataka. One such branch that was functioning in a
rented premise near Manipal has recently shifted to its own spacious
premises at Heroor near Brahmavar. It is giving 16 types of
residential training programmers for the unemployed rural youth and
help them to set up their own business by funding them through
Nationalized Banks. Fr. Sylvester then honored Mr Ganesh Hegde on behalf
of the parish for his committment towards helping the unemployed

ROCK INDIAN SCHOOL SELECTED FOR E-LITERACY AWARD Brahmmavar based Little
Rock Indian School, has been selected for the prestigious State
level Computer Literacy
Excellence Award instituted by the Ministry
of Information and Technology, Government of India. The award, which carries a cash prize of RS 1Lakh and
a Silver Trophy, will be presented by the President A.P.J Abdul Kalam,
at a function to be held at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi on August 29. Popular Prof.
Mathew C. Ninan, educationist and Principal of the School, will

Club of Barkur, Ex Rotary Governor Shri R.Krishna, recognized
the outstanding contribution of three colorful personalities of Barkur
viz.- Retd Principal Shri B.Seetarama Shetty
of NJC Barkur, Medical Officer of L.F.Hospital and local practitioner Dr.N.C.Kalkur,
and respected commercial merchant Shri
Gopalakrishna Kamath. During the function, Asst. Governor Shri Sudhakar
Nambiar, also present, and appreciated the services of Rotary Unit of
Barkur. Rotary President Shri Stany Pais presided over the
function, Shri Qasim welcomed the gathering, Secretary Shri Sudhakar
Rao, delivered the introductory talk and Shri Seetarama Shetty gave

C. Y. M. MEMBERS VISIT MANASA REHABILITATION & TRAINING CENTRE On Sunday the 28th July ICYM members along with Rev.
Fr. Sylvester D'Souza have paid a visit to Manasa center at
Pambur(near Shirva). This being a part of Varado programme, the
members reached to the center at 3.00 p.m.
They gave various types of entertainment
programme to the inmates such as dance, skits and action songs. About Manasa : Manasa rehabilitation and training center for the
children with special needs, is the most challenging project
undertaken by
the Catholic Sabha of Mangalore Diocese. The center
inaugurated On 14.11.1997, today accommodates 90 children from
various walks of
the society. The authorities today try to give basic education to
these
children and rehabilitate them through appropriate
training directed towards the purpose of enabling them to lead
a normal life. They try
to engage the children in income generating deeds such
as book binding, stitching, manufacturing candles, soap
oil, phenyl, gardening etc. They
say this will help the children to
upgrade themselves to various skills and to build confidence
amongst them. The
staff members are doing wonderful job in interacting with the inmates.
The work undertaken by the authorities is to be
apreciated and the service rendered to the society will be

competitions For the year 2000-2001. He was also selected for the
College Volley Ball Team and represented the College for the
State Level Competitions. A well built
personality with 6.3 ft height
and 81 k.g.s (weight) he
is now selelcted at the National Level for his active
involvement in
N. C. C. and now
going to Punjab for attending
a 20 days camp starting from 1st Week of August.
