Siver jubilee Celebrations Kick Off at Barkur

Realizing that the ICYM’s Silver Jubilee not merely a social, cultural or secular event, but an occasion to thank Almighty for his countless blessings, the youth of Barkur joined together with the parishioners on Sunday at 4.00 p.m to concelebrate the High mass with main celebrant  Mons. Edwin Pinto former Vicar General of M’lore Diocese. Brother Vijay Lobo lead the procession in the high streets of Barkur, specially decorated by various wards.

It was the epoch making stage programme on Wednesday 18th Dec 2002, the beginning of ICYM’s Silver Jubilee celebrations, Parish feast of St. Peter’s Church Barkur will be remembered in a special way as the 25th Annual Day Celebrations.

The first day of three day functions, was presided by the Bishop of M’lore. His lordship  Rt. Rev. Dr. A.P. D’Souza, started at 6.30 p.m with the  ICYM anthem  ‘ Mogaan, Sayven kristha spirithaan….’ by the members.

Bishop of Mangalore, Udupi District Commissioner Mr. S.R. Umashankar IAS, Shri Mattew .C. Ninan ,Principal, Indian Little Rock School, Bramavar, , Local MLA Mr. Jayaprakash Hegde, Mr. Peter Furtado, Vice- President,  St. Peter’s association, (Barkur) Mumbai, Mr.Herald D’Souza , President , Silver Jubilee Committee, Mr. Archibald Furtado, Parish Priest of Barkur Fr. Sylvester D’Souza were at the dais.

The president of the group Ms. Divya Picardo welcomed the guests & gave a brief introduction. Secretary Mr. Roshan Picardo, narrated the activities of unit during this Jubilee year in his Annual Report.

Hearing the annual report , The DC of Udupi District, responded by saying that by looking at the tiny group’s substantial achievement in a year, one can imagine the services rendered in the past 25 years. He wished all the members  a very bright future.

Mr. Mathew  C. Ninan stressed on creating a world of love and eliminate hatred. In his address, he lauded the youth spirit in this rural town. The large gathering of guests parishioners of  neighboring towns, itself is the proof of its popularity & good will. He ended saying let’s counter act evil with love, let ICYM Barkur redefine it.

Mr. P. Archibald Furtado, Secretary of ICYM’s ex member’s committee, called back the pleasant memories of past 25 years with a word of thanks to former & present Directors, Past members, office bearers. The deceased members also remembered at this glorious moment.

Some distinguished members of I.C.Y.M were honored. They are Mr. Kishore Gonsalves the winner of the Karnataka Konkanni Sahitya  Academy Award of 2002, Mr. Gerald Gonsalves,  Vice President of St. Peter’s Church, Barkur, Mr. Eric Soans writer and the editor of the souvenir , Mr. Alwyn Almeida, President, Rotaract, Barkur, Patric D’Silva, Jessie Roche Founder treasurer, Rita D’Souza and Fr Henry D’Souza S.F.X.

Mr. Jayaprakash Hegde called upon in raising the economic condition in order to raise the social condition of the local people. Youth need to be guided with political Knowledge and skill. He requested the D.C to keep up and strengthen the Historical Monuments Of Barkur   and  to re-establish the former glory of Santhegudde market of Barkur.  Mr. Hegde, offered to build the compound wall of the church , as a remebrance of the celebrations. 

Mr. Eric Soans in his delightful words responded and appreciated Mr. Hegde for his concern to catholic community and others.

On the occasion all the past presidents present, from Mr. Arun Diaz to Ms Divya Furtado were honored by the Bishop, who later in his message blessed the association whole heartedly and awakened the youth to be the salt and give taste to life and be the light in the words of Jesus. Bishop also honored the present Director Rev. Fr. Sylvester D’Souza for his sustained support for I.C.Y.M. Barkur.

A memento was given as a token of love and appreciation to Bishop by Jubilee President Mr. Herald D’Souza, Mr. Gerry to D.C. S.R. Umashankar, by President Divya to Mr. Matthew Ninan.

Mr. Vincent Santhosh read a vote of thanks. The whole evening was aptly compered by Mr. Rohan D’Souza and Ms.Sabitha Mascarenhas   

A Cultural Programme with drama ‘ Povithr Dhole’ was staged which enlarged the laughing nerves of the 800 audiences from the parishioners and the neighboring parishes. A few dances with fresh ‘Dil’ beat excited the youth and the old to face the growing chilly weather as the programme lasted till 11.10 pm.
