Matching Grant Project by Rotary , Barkur

One may get tired of congratulating them, or report about them, but Rotary Club, Barkur, never seems to stop when it comes to the Service to the Society. Fr. Tony in the news, in America!

(Taken from the 'THE CATHOLIC SPIRIT', VOL 8, No. 17, April 24, 2003, a Bi-Weekly published by the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minnesota, U.S.A.)

Fr. Joseph Anthony Andrade, better known as "Father Tony" became the U.S. Citizen on 16th April 2003, along with another priest from India.  There were a total of 614 people from 82 different countries, who took such oath to become U.S. citizens, at Bethel College, Minnesota, where the citizenship oath taking ceremony took place.

About 42 people, from Fr. Tony's Parish (St. Thomas the Apostle, St. Paul, Minnesota), attended the oath taking ceremony, by hiring a luxury bus, at their own expense.   This gesture shows how popular Fr. Tony has become.  Another 50 people joined them at the church for a grand reception to Fr. Tony to celebrate the occasion.

Fr. Tony credits the help of Joe and Ruth McCarthy (from St. Paul) whom he met in India, and the then Archbishop John Roach who helped him reach US, and find a place to stay.   It has been 10 years since Fr. Tony is in St. Paul.  He served as Chaplain at the United Hospital, and then as the Parish Priest, which position he holds at present.

It gives us 'Barkur.com' pleasure that we had featured a brief article about his family, and lately we opened a 'Spiritual Corner to accommodate Fr. Tony's mass appealing spiritual articles.  Barkur.com congratulates Fr. Tony on his becoming the United States Citizen, and for not forgetting his roots.  "It takes a village", and Fr. Tony, you are the product of Barkur, and we are proud of you!

Father Tony says he hopes to obtain Indian dual citizenship eventually, which shows his respect and gratitude to India, and to Barkur as well.

"I am trying to reach out to priests who are new.  I will go talk to them and offer them some help. I do that because I have gone through that process myself," says Fr. Tony.
