Folks: I got a phone call already saying, "You are advocating your brother's cause, which is fine and dandy. However, why don't you practice before preaching?"  Well, sure, my moral support is not good enough, suppose.  Charity spins around money, anyway!  I can pledge about four or five thousand rupees per year.  Thanks to the one who phoned in to motivate me!

Thanks Austin, 'There you go again!'  It's very kind of you to appreciate/acknowledge my brother Gabriel's success derived out of his hard work. Indeed hard work never goes un-rewarded, sometimes, rather late in   life though! We take pride in, not by inheriting, but by earning the hard way! True, he went to Bombay from Barkur, without reaching proper Mangalore! Those days, we had to cross seven rivers without bridges to reach Mangalore, whereas, from Moodahadu village, we did not have to cross that many rivers (via Kundapur, Agumbe Ghat, and train at Harihar), to reach Bombay.

At the end of the article "Personality of the month" about Gabriel, he has shared a solicitation letter to obtain donations for his 'dear to heart'  cause 'Village to College' scholarship fund. If he finds any kind of quick response or even a simple constructive advice from his fellow Barkurians first, then he plans to use that letter, later on in USA to approach his friends and scientists to help him towards enlarging this cause. Unless he proves there is some strong support from his own fellow Barkurians, or other Mangalorians, he is hesitant to approach others who do not know any  iota about Barkur and its surroundings. The purpose of this solicitation being, if anyone wants to join along with his cause, please, they can. If  any one wants to sponsor a student to go to college, they can do so in their own name. He is not asking donation to promote himself. However he
can recruit new students on behalf of new donors as the net work is already  in place and the scholarship will be named after each donor.  He knows quite well, that each person, who left Barkur, has his/her own way of   helping his fellow man according to his/her own ability or means, and he appreciates that.  Dear readers, please note, this scholarship is not for Barkurians alone, nor for Christians alone.  Any eligible college bound student with financial difficulties from Karnataka can apply. I want to assure you all, this is a genuine cause and few in Barkur, specially Kishoo knows about it and he too encouraged to list a solicitation letter in this Web site. Hope some with kind hearted minds will respond to his appeal, thus more students can benefit from it.

Austin, I was compelled to follow his footsteps.  When I went to Bombay I could not find any good jobs.  I was perhaps qualified to work as a sacristan, however, no such openings! One Saturday morning he took me to his place of work.  I watched him wear the shoe covers, lab coat, face mask, and gloves, with solemnity. He opened a very humanely killed rat, and showed me the heart, kidney, liver, adrenal, spleen, intestines, testes, brain, pituitary gland etc. and also showed me how to collect blood and count the white blood cells. He quizzed me in identifying the organs. That  very next Monday, he sent me to CIBA, a pharmaceutical company, for a technician job.  Yes, I got the job right away just by saying that I can open up rats, chicken or fish, and identify various organs, etc.

Testing new drugs in animals (Toxicology) has been my bread winning (with butter too) profession ever since, and I am very proud of it!!  Gabriel has proved that charity begins at home!
Thanks Austin, for triggering me to write these few lines.
