Dear Friends,

Through this small note, we wish to express our thanks to Dr. Jagdish Shetty, for this interview, which surely inculcate curiosity and interest in us, to learn great things about Barkur.

We too agree, that history of this place is not recorded systematically, here and there few hearsay stories, few links to monuments and good many things forgotten! For example, there was a temple dedicated to Goddess Ingaladevi, - its origin from Afghanistan,- near Panchalingeswara Temple, and this is only the second, such temple in the whole of India, the other one in Amaravathi in A.P. Unfortunately, today not even a clue or base, is seen here, instead a serpent god stone installed on that spot!
As the place Barkur also known as a place once ruled by Bhutala Pandya, but no single authentic version of his life and contribution is accepted by historians, say whether this man was a king, a governor or a mere merchant?

Dr.Shetty, please publish related articles if any, found in Dr.P.Gururaj Bhat's or Dr.Vasantha Shetty's research studies in this contest. Moreover, it is the duty of the local First Grade College's History Dept. to show enthusiasm in the excavation work, currently in progress, the way SMS Brahmmavar is doing at present.

Once again thank you Dr.Shetty and Mr. Stephen Lewis / Kishore Gonsalves, and Harry DSouza for involving such a learned personality into this Web-site.

P.Archibald Furtado, Muscat. 25/03/2003.

It is TWIN CITIES, first, then DR.SHETTY'S interesting interview, and in NEWS Mr HARIKRISHNA'S proposals and call to Chief Minister, to develop and include BARKUR in the tourist map of Karnataka, all these things, make me to feel proud and BARKUR .COM rightly deserve thanks.

Those who seen Karnataka State budget proposals, can visualise the C.M's, who also holds Finance Ministry, that huge amout of money is allocated to Tourism industry,  and it is my appeal to Mr.Hegde, our MLA, to oversee the potentials and Local Panchayat Members to put pressures on all concerned to get attention, rather concentrating on or swallowing  their own petty benefits.

With best wishes,

Barkurgar.26/03/2003

After a long time a really good informative, educative interview..!!Prof Jagdish Shetty's suggestions are worthy of immidiate implimentation.
One more doubt, he says Christianity entered Barkur, say Canara only in 17th   Century or so...! Somewhere in this site, I must have read, St. Bartholomio, one of the apostles, landed here and preached in the early first Century.

Are Vijaya Nagara rulers Jains or Hoysala's.. I think the latter. Could you please clarrify.........??

Mr. Suvarna:

I admire your enthusiasm on this subject necromancy.  What you are concerned is mainly a few persons taking advantage of the ignorant and vulnerable people using 'necromancy', and this must be stopped.   It's unfortunate, that there are simple minded people, who trust others blindly.

As long as illiteracy and poverty exists, the ignorant ones will be exploited.  Fifty years ago, I knew people who could not differentiate a ten rupee note from five. (There weren't too many notes floating around anyway!) They just trusted the store keeper.  I used to read (and write) some letters to my neighborhood folks, letters from their loved ones, specially seasonal migratory workers.  They believed what I read to them.(If the message was unpleasant, they used to ask me whether I knew to read!) They would have believed if I had altered the contents.  The problem we have to attack and help solve is to root out illiteracy.  I had read somewhere something like this, "Jab thak bevakkoop rahenge, thub thak 'hum log' paisa banayenge....'.  The 'hum log' the humbugs you are after!

Yes, we must catch those who cheat, but how?  They may say that they had full consent from the cheated ones!  I do appreciate your efforts in bringing awareness using newspaper articles, hand outs, local meetings, discussion groups,  etc., and this media like barkur.com.  Please continue.   If each Barkur family discusses this issue with their neighbor, I guess, this awareness will spread.  [And if each family plants 2-3 tomato plants, and redirects the shower water to these plants,.... well.. that is another story!]

A.Y.A Secretary:

No, nobody is going to change the age old names of our cities or villages.Perhaps, we were playing with words, Bar, Bra, or Asthana.Yes, roads, bridges, jobs, education,  and better yield must be the priority.  There is no action without talk, and it appears we are in the talking phase from a long time!

Dear Readers, for quite some time an exchange of views, are going on in this site, on twin cities, -  rather joint development of this area, once upon a time known as BARAKURU SAMSTAHANA, surely comprising Sasthan Hungarkatte sea-shore to Sural and upto Kallianpur.

Surely, I believe, the author of this column doesn't mean the name of the town to be altered. What we can observe is, the would be progress of this place preserving its rich heritage, symbolising BARKUR and modern, scientific, planned to be a commercial, educational, health services hub of the future with BRAHMMAVARA and say SASTAN too.

Whether one endorse this opinion or otherwise, right thinking people surely will not deny the facts and future will answer this, of which few symptoms already visible.

Secretary, On behalf of AYA Nagermutt - Barkur  22/03/2003

Dear friends,

In these days, a good flow of various opinions on BARKUR - BRAHMMAVARA- now SASTAN, flashed and still it is going on, definitely a sign of a progressive, healthy sign of a developing site.
In the past good many serious topics went un-noticed, over here, such as road development, agriculture, or the hall of church, to mention a few....! Even in these days of busy pre-occupation with personal engagements on the one side and Cricket, War, Financial set backs, on the other, people of Barkur, planning to bring back the lost glory, enlarging its geographical boundaries, deserve appreciation. With best wishes

M.M.Alvares, 22/03/2003.

Hi, Kishore...

Thanks for publishing my article TOMATO.

I have seen some gentlemen write many things about my article in Memory lane. Thanks to everybody, especially Mr. James Fernandes from USA. Indeed he has written very openly and clearly about necromancers and necromancy. Infact in my view and experience, these are the dangerous cancer  in our society. Their aim is just cheating and day-light robbery of poor innocent people .I have seen some people who had  no slippers  few years back on their feet,  are roaming in latest cars after these type of activities!  No need of any investment, education, experience for this business. It just requires very sharp tongue, i.e. how to talk with people, how to attract them, how openly cheat them.

Anyway... I am trying to organise a programme in Barkur that's called "PAVAADA BAYALU" by Professor Narendra Nayak from Mangalore, in which he will show how these cheaters are cheating the and cashing on the ignorant people. I can write about this subject on and on . I would like to mention here that, some of my articles are already published  in various Kannada weeklies and monthlies.

With warm regards,

Vijay Suvarna, 22/03/2003.

How about Sastan?  Don't forget Sastan. Twin City to Triplicity. Can be named Barbrastan, from BarBra! Fish was always 'sasta' and fresh in Sastan 50 years ago.  NH-17 passes through Sastan. There was a hospital in Sastan almost 40 years ago.  Any comments?

Dear Friends of Barkur,( and now Barahmmavar as well)

Just today, I read in the Deccan Hearld, that, Brahmmavar Assembly constituency, earlier thought of eliminating, by the Restucturing Board, recommended to keep it, as it is, with few more villages annexed to its jurisdiction.

But erstwhile Kundapur Seat may not be there and the regions under this will be shared by Brahmmavar and Baindoor.Surely, is it not a goodnews for you, when this site, mobilising public opinion for its, especially Barkur-Brahmmavar's further development..?
Best of Luck..!
