Barkur, Udupi District, September 25, 2026: A significant programme dedicated to the preservation of the historical legacy of Barkur was held today, Friday, September 25, 2026, sharply at 10:00 AM near Barkur Kalchapra. The event was hosted by Smt. Rukmini Shetty Memorial National Government First Grade College, Barkur, jointly organized under the auspices of the Veera Rani Chikkayi Thayi Charitable Trust (Regd.), Gullady, Udupi, and the Adima Kala Trust (Regd.), Udupi.
The programme brought together a cleanliness drive of the historic inscriptions of Barkur undertaken by students from various degree colleges affiliated with Mangalore University, a memorial programme in honour of Chikkayi Thayi, and a massive awareness jatha (procession) themed "Save the Historical Heritage."
Distinguished Dignitaries Grace the Occasion
The campaign was formally inaugurated by Dr. D.V. Paramashivamurthy, Vice-Chancellor of Kannada University, Hampi, who set the tone for the day's proceedings by underscoring the importance of safeguarding Barkur's ancient inscriptions and cultural heritage.
The jatha itself was flagged off by Dr. Raghurama Shetty, Gullady, Founder-President of the Veera Rani Chikkayi Thayi Charitable Trust (Regd.), Gullady.
The memorial programme was presided over by Dr. Bhaskar Shetty S., Principal of Smt. Rukmini Shetty Memorial National Government First Grade College, Barkur.
Gracing the occasion with their honoured presence were Dr. Chittaranjan Shetty, Secretary of the Veera Rani Chikkayi Thayi Charitable Trust (Regd.), Gullady, who attended as a guest of honour, and Prof. T. Murugeshi, Founder-Convener of the Adima Kala Trust (Regd.), Udupi, who delivered a special lecture on the occasion.
Also present were Smt. Shobha R., IQAC Coordinator; Sri B. Shantharam Shetty, President of the Barkur Educational Trust (Regd.), Barkur; and Sri K. Mahesh, Development Officer of the Barkur Grama Panchayat, along with other dignitaries.
Wide Participation from Students and Institutions
The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from lecturers and students of Barkur and various other affiliated colleges, along with cadets from the Barkur College Rangers unit and the NCC unit, all of whom actively took part in the day's activities.
As part of the study and research campaign on the historical inscriptions of Barkur, students from various degree colleges under Mangalore University conducted a massive jatha aimed at raising awareness for the preservation of this historic heritage site.
Awareness Activities on Barkur's Legacy
A series of activities were organized during the programme with the specific objective of creating awareness among students regarding the historical significance of Barkur, its ancient inscriptions, and its rich cultural heritage.
Students and faculty members who had come from different colleges under Mangalore University took part in the programme and spread the message on the importance of protecting Barkur's history, its inscriptions, and its heritage monuments.
Through the grand jatha organized on this occasion, awareness was created among the general public about the need to preserve Barkur's historical heritage and to pass it on to future generations.
