Hall of Famers of Yester Barkur

When Barkur.com was opened in December 2001, we introduced this site using one of this following line: " This is just a beginning towards a larger objective, to include Barkurians in all walks of life, culture, and faith in this mainstream…."  We did a fairly good job in presenting a few living ones in our 'Personality of the Month', POM column.  While continuing this POM column, now, we want to depict the Barkurians who are no more with us physically, but mere memories to some or unwritten history to many others.

"Famous ones need not be Great and Great ones may not be Famous. Scores of such 'great ones' lived in our Barkur - few left relics and legacies behind, like the Educational Institutions, Hospitals, Roads, Bridges, Dams, and Houses of God, etc.  These people lived a saintly life in the service of society, not craving for fame, name, or fortune for themselves," observes Archibald Furtado of Nagarmut.

"We, the beneficiaries, have an obligation to express gratitude and show respect to all those personalities, posthumously of course, for their sacrifices in helping to shape the present Barkur, and for improving the lifestyles of Barkurians," says James Fernandes, of Moodahadu Kudru.

With these views in mind, and in response to many of our readers' desire to know and learn from such personalities, for the benefit and knowledge of the present and future generations, Barkuronline is delighted to open a new column named, "Hall of Famers of Yester Barkur," to present and honor a few personalities and their praiseworthy contribution to Barkur.

Folks, please share your candid memories, comments, or kudos.  These will be presented in our widely read popular Sandesh column.  Feel free to recommend your worthy choices, along with some bio-data including the legacy they left behind, and we will accommodate them in this new column to the our best of ability.  Who knows, these might wind up in a book form, Gods-willing! Thank you for your continued support.

ONE WHO SERVED HIS NATION AND THE COMMUNITY

MR. GREGORY FERNANDES OF BARKUR.

When we look back and turn the pages of the history book of Barkur we come across many prominent figures. These people lived a joyful life serving their nation, community, and the loving families were they were born. One of these very prominent figures was Mr. Gregory Fernandes. Although we may not have a written history book about these outstanding citizens of Barkur, nevertheless they are remembered because of their loving service to the nation and our local community where they lived and died.

I have many good memories of Gregory. In my seminary days I remember he was always on time for daily mass. He was a disciplined man and although he appeared to be very serious, he was very kind in his dealings with his neighbors and fellow parishioners. I always addressed him as “Fernandes Sir,” but others called him “Gigu Bappu” out of respect. He was always willing to go the extra mile to help his fellowman.

LIFE AND SERVICE TO THE NATION:

Mr. Gregory was born on April 29, 1935. After completing his elementary and higher education he decided to serve his country in the Military. He responded to that call with great courage and enthusiasm and served in the Indian National Army for 28 years. During that time he held many important positions but never made others feel inferior to his position. His motto was to serve his country whole heartedly with courage and love. Although he was transferred to various parts of India he always accepted it in a good spirit.

MARRIAGE AND FAMILY LIFE

Gregory married Julia Clara Pais on May 31, 1966 and both began a journey of service to our nation. I am sure in those days it was hard traveling from one part of the nation to the other . But this couple had great faith in God, trusting that He would protect them and provide for their needs. They were blessed with 3 children; Venus, Sharmila and Premila.

Their children were educated in Barkur and are now married and raising their own families. Venus is serving in Bahrain as a major supervisor in the Court of the Crown Prince. Sharmila obtained a Nursing degree at our famous K.M.C. Hospital in Manipal and served a few years in the Almana General Hospital in Alkobar, Saudi Arabia, with her husband Rony Andrade. She now cares for her family at home. Premila also completed her studies in K.M.C. Manipal and is presently working in the Indian Postal Service in Bennekudru.

Upon completion of his military service Gregory returned home and joined his family in Barkur. Being an active, energetic person he joined the K.M.C. Hospital Security Force. Recognizing his leadership qualities and dedication to hard work the hospital administration appointed him Director of the Security Department, where he served until his death.

SERVICE TO THE LOCAL COMMUNITY:

Gregory was always helpful to Barkurians who were seeking medical care in the K.M.C. Hospital. He visited them during their hospitalization, helping to make them comfortable in a strange place. Knowing many of the medical staff personally, he was able assist many people in finding a good doctor. He also assisted others wishing to apply to the School of Nursing or attend Medical Courses by using his influence and making appropriate recommendations. He was also a peacemaker in his neighborhood. When conflicts occurred in families, Gregory was the first to be called to help in bringing peace to family members. He was a humble person, never drawing attention to himself, but always willing to assist others in whatever way he could.

RESPONSE TO GOD’S DIVINE AND HEAVENLY CALL:

On December 15, 1991 God called Gregory from this world to his heavenly reward, there to experience everlasting peace and joy in His presence. Although that day was very sad for his family and many others who knew him so well, we had to let him go from this world to God in Heaven. A few years later on March 26, 1998, his beloved wife, Julia, joined him in Heaven.

14 years have gone by since Gregory passed away but those beautiful memories of all the good he did in the service of our nation and local community is still alive in our hearts.

In the name of our barkuronline.com web master Kishoo de Barkur and team and also our parish community of St. Thomas the Apostle I thank you, Gregory. May you and your beloved wife, Julia, rest in peace in the presence of God Almighty and all those who have gone before us.
