are invited for the Parish feast of Barkur
The most eagerly awaited event at Barkur, the Annual Parish feast
of the church of St.Peter, is scheduled on 20th and 21st
of December 2011.
The Solemn Vespers will be celebrated on Tuesday the 20th
December 2011 at 7-00 pm. The solemn Eucharistic celebration of
the feast is on Wednesday the 21st December 2011 at
10-30 a.m.
Traditional ‘Pirjenths’ for this year feast are Marshal Joseph &
Martha Suares and family, (USA) Halekody, Barkur to thank the Lord
for the numerous blessings bestowed upon their family through St.
Peter, Patron Saint of Barkur.
The Suares family invites all the Parishioners in Barkur and
elsewhere to participate in the festivities and to fellowship
lunch at 12:00 noon on Tuesday the 20th December 2011
at their residence.
Kokkarne Student Prashant Takes a Big 'Leap' to Pole Vault
Nationals
Prashant, II PUC student of Kokkarne Government Pre-University
College, near Barkur, secured the second place in state-level pole
vault competitions held in Chitradurga, thereby qualifying for the
national competition scheduled to be held in Ranchi, Jharkhand.
He is one of only two athletes who qualified for the national
competitions.
Prashant is a II PUC (arts) student, son of Shekar Markala and
Laxmi, residents of Sastav, near here. His brother works in a
restaurant in Hospet and sister is pursuing D Ed in Udupi.
It’s significant that Prashant is a rural student shining in
national competitions. The other qualifier is girl student
Akshata S in javelin from Kollur Mookambika Pre-University
College.
Prashant took early interest in sports when he was studying in
Cherkady Sharada high School, after his schooling in Sastav Lower
Primary School. He had participated in taluk level pole vault
competitions when he was studying in high school, but became a
versatile athlete while studying in Kokkarne Government
Pre-University College.
Prashant secured the first place in the district-level
competitions when he was studying for his I PUC and excelled in
the state level sports meet held at Tumkur. He secured second
place in the district-level sports meet held at the district
stadium during this academic year and secured second place in the
state level sports meet held in Onake Obavva stadium, Chitradurga,
thereby qualifying for the national competitions.
Pole Vault Athletes of Kokkarne:
The pole vault has a long history in Kokkarne College. There were
many achievers in the past. School betterment committee president
B Srinivas Hegde was a pole vault athlete when he was a lecturer
at the college. Other pole vault athletes of the region are Sidda
from Muddoor, Udaya, and Sandesh Shetty.
Prashant has excelled in sports by making the best use of basic
facilities at the college. He is being mentored by physical
training instructors Shiroor Sridar Shetty and Manjunath Shetty.
Moreover, he needs a better coach to excel at national and
international competitions.
The district Amateur Athletic Association president Balakrishna
Hegde assured to support Prashant in his national debut. Sports
enthusiasts can also contribute to Prashant’s future endeavors.

BPL 2011 at Barkur
After the runaway success of BPL 2010 last year, the cricket buffs
in Barkur are once again geared up to present Barkur Premier Legue
2011, a fun filled 60 Yards Cricket Tournament between the
invited teams where only players above the age of 30 are allowed
to participate.
The BPL 2011 will be held on 2 days on 24 and 25th of
December at Di. Umashankara Shetty Sports Ground at the National
Pre University College, Barkur. For invitations for the teams and

Philatelist Daniel Monteiro Gets Closer to Guinness Record
‘Birdpex – 2011’, the solo philatelic exhibition of Daniel
Monteiro, held at SMS Community Building, Brahmavar, to create a
Guinness World Record concluded on Thursday December 8.
Monteiro bagged three awards for his solo exhibition of bird
stamps for the first time in Asia, for displaying over 5,000 big
postage stamps, and for his collection of over 1,000 postage
stamps of ducks.
Kudremukh range deputy conservator of forests Prakash S Netlekar
was the chief guest.Speaking on the occasion, Netlekar said that
philately has interesting and research aspects and Monteiro can
serve as the resource person for environmental workshops which
will be helpful for the new generation.
SMS College correspondent Fr Ramban G M Scaria said that patience
and simple nature takes one to greater heights.
India Book of Records representative Ramachandra G S, after
presenting the certificates to Monteiro, said that the postage
collection of birds will not merely serve to create a record; it
would serve as a ready reference for the new generation on various
species of birds worldwide.
‘Birdpex – 2011’ began on Wednesday December 7. Over 5,000 postal
stamps from nearly 175 countries, some of them very rare and
precious, were displayed at the exhibition. This exhibition
brings Monteiro closer to a Guinness World Record.

Grand annual day celebrations at Maryknoll High School
Maryknoll High School, Barkur, celebrated the School Day on 2nd
December 2011 with all grandeur.
The program was held in the open stage decorated with a tall Areca
nut tree, buntings and decorative lights.
The program started with the School’s band team welcoming the
guests with its Grand March, followed by beautifully presented
Welcome Dance.
Smt. Ivy Sequeira, Senior Teacher welcomed the guests. Head Sister
Sr. Asha Pereira presented the ‘Annual Report’ of the school. She
mentioned that school was able to achieve 100% pass percentage for
consecutive 3 years and it was due to dedication of teachers and
hard work of the students.
The prizes were distributed to the winning students in various
sports / cultural competitions. Prizes were also given to the
students who scored highest in various subjects.
The alumni and current students, who had done outstanding
achievements in the field of literature, sport and science, were
facilitated during the ceremony. The facilitated were Antony
Prakash D’Souza – Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy award, Roshan
Lobo – International Power Lifter, Karthik – National
sportsperson, Lakshmi – State level sportsperson, Nayaz – All
India South zone sportsperson, Varsha Haris Lobo – National
sportsperson, Jenifer Ria Carvalho – State level Sportsperson and
Guatam – Participation in State level Science competition for
Inspire award.
One of the student, Karthik, performed “Guruvandana”, to thank his
teacher, Hary Gonsalves, Physical Education Teacher, who trained
and mentored him towards all his achievements.
The program was presided over by Mr. Shantaram Shetty. Rev. Fr.
Alban D’Souza, Barkur Parish Priest; Mr. Jagadish Shetty, HOD,
History dept, Poona Prajna College, Udupi; Mr. Nagesh Shanubagh,
AEO, Brahmavara ward; Smt. Gauri V. Poojary, Member, Udupi Taluk
panchayat; Smt. Vasanti, President, Barkur Panchayat, Smt. Shaila
Herald D’Souza, Member, Barkur Panchayat were present during the
ceremony as special Guests. The Guests lauded the schools
excellent achievements in keeping the enrolments and standards
high whereas many Kannada schools are being shut across state.
The stage program was followed by grand and enchanting cultural
programs which included Janapada dances, Bharata natyam, Movie
based songs, Skits and Dramas. Mr. Dolphy D’Souza and his team
handled the back stage arrangements.
