I.C.Y.M., BARKUR Steals the show at Brahmavar

Hum honge kaamyaab....

On Sunday,  29th   September,  Kallianpur  Varado level variety competitions were held at Swarna Bhavan Brahmavar, and ICYM Barkur unit came out in flying colors, winning the coveted trophy. Rev. Fr. J Mendonca, Parish Priest of  Holy  Family Church Brahmavar, inaugurated the the  competitions.  Youth groups from all the  parishes situated  within Kallianpur Varado participated in the the competitions.

While Barkur unit of ICYM was awarded as winners, the Brahmavar unit got the 2nd  place. Barkur  unit  started  their  programme  with a dance to  the  tune of "Vande  Matharam", followed by  a  skit   "save the environment", and a  Bible skit having the theme of "Judgement of King Solomon", and a traditional "Kolata" (Dhandiya), along with other value based programmes and  concluded  their  programme with a special show  wherein  the  members  with  candles  in their hands joined their voice for  the  song "hum honge kamyaab".

Judgement of King Solomon

The sub editor of "Raknno"   weekly  and Vice President of ICYM central council were the judges. For the conculding  ceremony Mr. Peter Lewis, Chairman of   Karnataka  Lalithkala  Academy was the guest and gave away the  awards.  The distinguished guests included Rev. Fr. Elias D'Souza, Diocesan Youth Director, Rev. Fr. Maxim Rosario, Varado Youth Director.

It is also highlighted here that ICYM,Barkur unit has received an invitation from Rotary Club of Sastan to a give a show during their camp on Saturday,5th  October from 4.30 p.m. to 6.30 p.m.

Patron's Feast of Society of St.Vincent De Paul

Society of St.Vincent De Paul is celebrating its Patron's east today (29.08.2002).

During the holy mass the president of this association Mr. Patrick D'Silva has presented a brief report of the activities conducted during 2001-2002 and thanked all those who helped them in completing the projects successfully. After the mass a brief get together was arranged and the local leaders took part in this meeting. The meeting was presided over by Rev. Fr. Sylvester D'Souza.

Society of St. Vincent De Paul in Barkur

Established in the year 1982, this society has successfully completed its 20 years of fruitful existence in barkur. Blessed by Rev. Fr. J N Lobo, Mr. Francis Sequeira as its founder president and Late Mr. Victor Dias as the secretary the association laid a solid foundation and served the society irrespective of religion. Mr. Sequeira led the society for about 9 years as its president and handed over the responsibility to Mr Staney Pais in the year 1991. Mr. Augustine  D'Souza served as the president for a brief period of 7 months and then again Mr. Francis Sequeira was elected as its president during  the year 1995. The present president Mr. Patrick D'Silva took over the president ship on 19.04.1998 and is continuing since then. 

Their activities include the visits to the sick and poor, helping them monetarily, if necessary giving medical treatment (including hospitalization), help the poor students by providing them books etc.
At this juncture, when they have successfully completed their 20 years of existence we on behalf of "barkur.com" wish the society very best.

Further they have invited all the well wishers for their programme on 1st December 2002, when the  members of about 14 parishes will come to Barkur for the General Body meeting of the Zone as well as for the 20th   year celebration.

Athula Yuvaka Sangha, Heradi

During the festival season if we move towards Saiberakatte or Yedthadi from Kalchapra, Barkur we find at least one banner or poster having an announcement about one or other cultural or sports programme/competitions organised by "Athula Yuvaka Sangha", a lesser known youth group to the  people of Barkur, which is organising activities in and around Heradi.

The various programmes includes "Sarvajanika Ganesha Aradhane" during Chauthi festival, competitions to the students of Heradi School, repair of roads  by organizing "Shramadan", various social activities jointly with other  groups (local rickshaw drivers etc.).  

The yuvaka sangaha that was established about 20 years back is now having  more than 30 active members. Mr. H. Sdhakara (Electrical Contactor) is the  present president and is having 5 vice presidents. They are :

Mr. Narasimha, Mr. Suresh Poojary, Mr. Udaya, Mr. Chandra and Mr. Diwakara. Mr. Prakash Tantry is the secretary of the yuvaka sangha and Mr. Umesh is  the joint secretary. 

During this Chauthi Season they have organized various competitions and have involved themselves in the Mid Day Meal programme which was  recently inaugurated in Heradi School.

CHRISTIAN POLITICAL FORUM, BRAHMAVAR CONSTITUENCY

During the year 1999 leaders of various walks belonging to 14 Parishes/church situated in the area of Brahmavar constituency came together to form a Forum by name "Christian Political Forum" . The main purpose of this movement is to have better contact with the politicians and to mobilize the people for better understanding and to support the secular candidates during various local
elections.  Mr. Mark William Lewis as its founder president the forum has successfully completed the first tenure of 3 years.


The general body of the forum was held on Sunday, 22nd September at Nirmala High School, Brahmavar. During this meeting that was attended by more than 100 leaders belonging to various parishes the new committee for the next 3 years was elected. The newly elected leaders are

President          : Mr. Mark William Lewis, Matapady

Vice Presidents: Mr. Job Lewis, Sastan

                        Mr. Romeo Lewis, Kallianpur

Secretary          : Mr. Antony Roche, Brahmavar

Treasurer          : Mrs. Maxie Andrade, Kemmanu

Mr. Shirthadi William Pinto, Lawyer was the Chief Guest and has conducted the election. Within a week we intend to publish an interview with the President of this forum and we on behalf of "barkur.com" wish the newly elected body every success in the days to come.
