Varado
Youth Conference - 2002 ICYM Barkur, hosted the Kallianpur Varado Youth Conference-2002 at Barkur on Monday, 14th October 2002. The Varado Conference was inaugurated by Kishoo, Barkur. (Mr. Kishore Gonsalves, host of our website "www.barkur.com"). In his inaugural address he asked the youth to be better equipped for the challenges of the new millennium by educating themselves in the true sense rather than gaining some degrees. He complimented the youth of Barkur for their splendid performance and their efforts in uniting the youth under one banner of ICYM. Mr. William Mark Lewis, President of Christian Political Forum was the guest for the inaugural ceremony and he asked the participants to have better contact with the political leaders and get the benefit from them to the society through youth movements. Rev.Fr.Maxim Rosario, Varado Youth Director, Rev. Fr. Sylvester D'Souza, Parish Priest, Mr. Lancer Fernandes, Varado President were the guests. Mr.
Kishore Gonsalves and Mr. William Mark Lewis were honored on this
occasion by ICYM, Barkur unit. Mr. Melvin Vaz, Neermarga (Editor of Amcho Yuvak Monthly) was the resource person for the seminar and he spoke on the subject "Youth in the new millennium”. With many examples he successfully attracted the concentration of the participants. The participants in groups discussed the issue in length and through skits and role-plays they answered the questions posed to them. Mrs. Eugene Quadros evaluated these answers and complimented the delegates. After
the activities, the parish level reports were presented by the
President and Secretaries of the respective units and Mr. Lancer
Fernandes introduced the varado leaders to the house. The
valedictory session was presided over by Mr. Gerald Gonsalves,Vice
President of the Parish. During the evaluation, the participants gave their observations and complimented the ICYM unit of
Barkur for hosting such a beautiful programme and expressed their
desire of having more of the similar activities from them.
Miss Divya Furtado, President of the unit welcomed the gathering and the full day programme was aptly compeered by Roshan Picardo, Secretary and Sabitha Mascarenhas , Treasurer of ICYM Barkur unit. -Herald

CAMP AT SASTANA The
de-addiction camp organized by Rotary
Club, Hangarkatta in
association with the local groups, ICYM,
Barkur, Kasturba
Hospital, Manipal etc. at Chetana High School, Mabukala, Sastana was
inaugurated on 2nd October
2002 concluded successfully on 6th October.. The camp was inaugurated by Rev. Fr. Vincent Martis, Parish Priest, St. Antony's Church, Sastana. Prof. Dr. P.S.Y.N. Sharma and Prof. Dr. B. K. Kumar, Head of Dept., Psychiatric Dept., KMC, Manipal were chief guests for the inaugural ceremony.

doctors of KMC Manipal and Karavali Hospital, Kota gave the inmates
all types of medical assistance. On Saturday, 5th October ICYM, Barkur along with other associations organized various activities for the beneficiaries. Members

Mr. V.L.Roche, President, Barkur Education Society and
Mr. William Mark Lewis, President, Christian Political Forum.

Catholic Sabha were also
present. The members of
ICYM presented
various value
based programmes for about 2.30 hours
and the organizers as
well as the inmates appreciated
the group for
their involvement
and the contributions for building a better society. AT
AND AROUND BARKUR IN BRIEF… Brahmmavar Catholic Credit Co-Operative
Society held its 6th Annual Gathering at Swarna Bhuvan, Holy
Family Complex. During the meeting, presided over by Mr. Valerian
Menezes, legal advisor Mr.Shirtady William Pinto was also present. It is well known that the parishoners of Sastan,
Brahmmavar and Barkur, enrolled themselves as members in good number. In coming days the society can play the role to
invite Urban Banks like MCC to open its branch here, so that few
youngsters can get employment and help to mobilize finance in the core
