INTER COLLEGE SPORTS COMPETETIONS AT BARKUR The Udupi Taluk Junior College level sports competitions was held at National Pre University College (N J C), Barkur on Wednesday, 13th November 2002. The yester-years sports champions Mr. Patrick D’Almeida, Mr. Joseph Mascarenhas, Mr. Manjappa, Mr. Somayya and Mr. Shashidhar Poojary carried the jyothi (Lighted Torch) from Hanuman Temple, Simhasanagudde, Barkur to the college ground, where Mr. Shantharam Shetty received the same and lighted the lamp. The local M L A, Mr. Jayaprakash Hegde, inaugurated the sports meet and he wished the participants every success and greeted them on behalf of the local community. Mr. Seetharam

Udupi Taluk took part in
the competitions. S. M. S. Junior College, Brahmavar got the Team Championship Shield and Milagres Junior College, Kallianpur were the Runners-up. -Harry
DSouza NSS Camp at Barkur The annual special camp of the NSS unit of the Government First Grade College, Barkur was held at Shri Durga Parameshwari Private Higher Primary School, Ranganakeri recently in the October Holidays. Mr. Jayaprakash Hegde,
MLA from the Brahamavar constituency inaugurated the camp. He
expressed his happiness about such camps and said they are helpful in
providing the basic amenities to the Janatha Colonies. Udupi Jilla
Panchayath President , Mr. Ashok Kumar Hegde was the chief guest ,
wished all the students involved in the camp. Mr. B. seetharaam
Shetty, retired Principal, NJC, Barkur, Mr. Subbanna Hegde of the
College Development Committee , and Mr. Koodli Sathyanarayana Udupa
were also present on the occasion. Head Master of the school Mr.
Ganesh Vakuda and the College Principal Mr. Rajaram Hebbar , presided
over the function. Mrs. Latha and Mr.
Ravi Poojari participated in the program as the Camp -in- Charges. FIRST
HOLY COMMUNION AT ST.PETER’S CHURCH Sunday, 10th November
was a great day
for Barkurians'. On that day 15 children
belonging to Barkur
Parish received First HolyCommunion during the 2nd holy
mass at 9.30 a.m. Reception functions
were held at various
places wherein people
from all the walk of life
gathered and
greeted these children and
shared their joy. INTER
PARISH SPORTS & CULTURAL COMPETETIONS ICYM, Barkur unit, has
recently conducted Inter Parish Sports and Cultural competitions as a
part of its "Silver Jubilee Celebrations". The participants
from the parishes situated
in Kundapur,
Kallianpur and Udupi Varados took part in the competitions. Mr.Staney
Pais, President, Rotary Club, Barkur inaugurated the Sports
competitions. Mr.Ivan Rebello, Secretary, St. Peter's Association, (Barkur)
Mumbai and
Mr. Venkatramana Aithal, Principal, N J C, Barkur were present
for the inaugural ceremony. The
youth group
of Moodubelle
Parish won the
Volleyball titles for both men and women
category, and Udupi group
was the runners up (Boys and Girls).
Shuttle Cock ,Ladies (doubles) - out door - was won by Barkur
team and Kemmannu team
got the runners-up. The winners for
Shuttle Cock boys were Udupi Parish and Kemmannu got the runners-up. The Inter Parish Cultural Competitions were inaugurated by Mr.Keshav Kunder, Ex President of Udupi Zilla Panchayath. Sister Superior of IHM Convent Barkur, Sr. Liliana and Mr.Ivan Rebello were present during the occasion. While the Youth Group of Udupi Parish won the I Place for their splendid performance, Sastan and Brahmavar parishes shared the II Place. -Harry

Local MLA, Shri Jaya Prakash Hegde, disclosed that Small Irrigation
Department, of Govt of Karnataka accorded its technical sanction to
construct ‘Salt Water Dam’, near Herald D’Souza’s House,
across tributary Sita, locally known as Bannadi Hole. The
proposed dam will be 44.50 Meters long and 3.15 meters in height will
irrigate approximately 300 acres of agricultural fields of Nagermutt
– Barda-kali area, will cost an estimated Rs. 70 lakhs. Soon tenders
are called for and work will start during summer!! News
