Excavation of temples likely at Barkur, Aihole in December

Udupi, November 29: The M. H. Krishna Institute of Indology , sponsored by the Mythic Society has initiated two major  research programmes this year. The Barkur archaeological excavation project in Udupi district and a two year Aihole  Temple Studies project in Bagalkot district.  At a press  meet recently, institute Director Dr. S. Nagaraju and Mythic Society president Dr. Suryanath U. Kamath, outlined the highlights of these programmes.

Barkur, today  a small coastal town situated between Udupi and Kundapur, was once a flourishing commercial and industrial centre with a seaport, which carried out trade with European countries. Today archaeologists are hoping to unravel some more information  about this town, which still has 10 temples  built during the rule of Vijayanagara Kings.

Aihole, a small village, is considered the cradle temple architecture and the site museum of Indian temple styles as it is the only place in India where temples of the three major styles Nagara, Dravida and Vesara co- exist.  The ASI's efforts in clearing the debris, have opened over 100 temples built between the 5th and 13th centuries, necessitating the need for fresh studies.
