State level Invitational Open Karate Championship Competitions at Barkur.

The School of Budokan Karate, Mangalore organized a Karnataka State open Karate Championship recently at Gurudeva Bhavan, Barkur, blessed by Rev Fr.Sylvester D’Souza.

Minister of Ports and Fisheries Sri Vasanth V. Salian inaugurated the competitions, and the function was presided over by Sri K.  Jayaprakash Hegde, M.L.A, Bramavar. The chief guests for the function were Sri Praveen Kumar-Vice President of Karnataka State Karate Association; Sri B Shantharam Shetty, Industrialist, Barkur; Sri Jaganth Poojary, President of Billava Seva Sangha, Barkur; Rtn Sri Stany Pais, President of Rotary Club,Barkur. 

There were many competitors among children and adults from all over Karnataka. Young entrepreneur Sri Stroiny Pais distributed the prizes. Mr. Umesh Karkera won the grand championship. Mr. Derrick Kishan bagged the Katta Grand Championship. In weapon Katta category Deepthi D’Souza & Supreeth .M.P secured the first places respectively.

The Championship competitions were conducted under the guidance of Sensei Raghupathi, Black Belt IV DAN, State Examiner, and Sensei Janaedhan Naik, Black Belt IV DAN, Chief Instructor, SBK Mangalore.

BARKUR GIRLS IN THE UNIVERSITY TEAM  

The Mangalore University Girls Volley Ball team led by Miss Roopa Rani  (Captain) of Hanehalli, Barkur, a student of Government First Grade College, Barkur (1st  from left in the photo), represented the Mangalore University in the Inter University Volley Ball competitions held at Kerala recently.

The other members from Barkur College include Miss Promoda (standing 2nd  from left) and Miss Sharada  (standing 6th from left).  We congratulate Miss Roopa Rani, Miss Promoda and Miss Sharada for having made this great achievement and wish them every success in the future.

Mr. Robert Fernandes Honored at Barkur

Mr.Robert Fernandes  who  served  Nagarmutt  ward of Barkur Parish  as the "Gurkar" for more than 15 years was honoured on his retirement.

The public function held on Wednesday, 12th February at  4.00 p.m. was presided over by  Rev. Fr. Silvester D'Souza, Parish Priest.  Mr.Alwyn D'Almeida, President, Rotaract Club, Mr. Rudolf D'Souza, President, Catholic Sabha and Mr.Patrick D'Silva, President, Society of St.Vincent De Paul were the guests of honour and expressed their views.

Mrs. Leena Fernandes, Mrs. Benedict Andrade and Mr. Herald D'Souza  thanked Mr. Fernandes for his tireless services to the society on behalf of the residents of Nagarmutt Ward.

Rev. Fr. Sylvester D'Souza honored Mr. Robert Fernandes and presented a memento on this occasion.

While Mr.Titus D'Souza welcomed the gathering, Mrs. Shaila D'Souza proposed vote of thanks and Mrs. Jacintha D'Souza conducted the proceedings.

ERIC SOANS BARKUR IS THE BEST KANNADA STORY WRITER

A panel of judges announced Eric Soans, Barkur as the best Kannada Story writer, as “Jana Prathinidi”, a Kannada weekly conducted Kannada short story competition to celebrate its 6th Anniversary. Around 120 stories were to fight for the top slot  and Eric’s Thiruvina Mane; ( The house at the cross) was selected as the best Kannada short story. Eric was honored with a handsome cash prize during a colorful function held today (16/02/03) at Akshatha Auditorium of Hotel Hariprasad, Kundapur. Dr. H.S. Ramachandra Gowda, Head, Janapada Dept, Mysore University and President of Karnataka Government Janapada & Yakshagaana Academy graced the occasion as President, while Sri H.Shrinivasa Shetty, MLA, Kundapura and Dr. Sabiha, Head of Kannada Dept of Mangalore University were among the chief guests.

Eric Soans is the Editor in charge of Silver Jubilee Memorial Souvenir of ICYM Barkur and “Pedruchi Chavi” parish magazine of St. Peter’s Church Barkur. His crosswords are most sought after in the leading Konkanni periodicals and Janavahini , the Kannada Daily ran his Cinema Crossword competition regularly for a long time .
