Dream about your goals, students told

Manipal, March 28: For the school students coming from the rural areas of Udupi District, it was a rare opportunity to meet the President, Dr. A. P. J.  Abdul Kalam, at the interactive session arranged by the Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), here on Friday.

Earlier, the President inaugurated the golden jubilee celebrations of the Kasturba Medical College, here.Dr. Kalam inspired the children with his words of wisdom.
His effect on them was electric as they heard him intently and responded enthusiastically.

Dr. Kalam's love for children was evident right from the start when he asked the children, who were seated behind the Press and the VIP enclosure, to come forward and sit in the "no-man's land" created for the purpose of security. In the midst of his speech, he made the children repeat the following words: "Dreams transform into thoughts. Thoughts result into action."

Dr. Kalam then asked the children to explain the meaning of the statement. A boy stood up and said that dreams shaped a person's thoughts and thoughts motivated one to adventurous action. The President responded by giving him "80% marks." Dr. Kalam explained that if a person wanted to become a doctor or engineer, he should first dream about it.

Another student asked the President what he would choose if he was given a choice between humanity and patriotism, because as a scientist, he should choose humanity, but as the first citizen of the country, he should be patriotic.

The President replied by saying that human beings were made up of physiology and psychology. Science gave one answers to the problems of development in the form of electricity, Green Revolution, White Revolution, and IT. However, for the integrated development of a person, materialism was not enough.

A person should graduate from religion to spirituality. Another student asked Dr. Kalam what steps could be taken to stop the flight of scientists and scholars from India to other countries. Dr. Kalam said that 2,00,000 engineers and 1,00,000 scientists (those who had done M.Sc., Ph.D.) were migrating from the country every year. That was roughly 30 per cent of the educated class. It was not just the loss that should be calculated.

There was pain involved in it. The Silicon Valley in the U.S. was manned by the Indians, Chinese, and the Americans in that order. It was a global phenomenon to go in search of wealth and knowledge, a trend that had been there since time immemorial. It was such a spirit that prompted Columbus to go in search of America.
People who went abroad kept in touch with their families and their alma mater.

It was not necessary to worry about the movement of people. What the country should ensure was that its research and multiple laboratories were adequately manned. In ancient India, Nalanda University was a great center of learning, which attracted students from foreign countries, Dr. Kalam said.

About 50 students and 2 teachers from Barkur, were selected to meet the President.

Stating that he did not have much time to answer all the questions because of his other engagements, the President said that students and children could always ask him questions on e-mail and he would respond to them, and asked them to contact him at www.presidentofindia.nic.in .
