ELECTRICITY CONSUMERS' FORUM AT BARKUR

On Sunday, 27th   July a rare meeting was held at Buddha Jayanthi Mandir, Barkur which was organised by I C Y M, Rotaract Club, Mogaveera Yuvaka Mandala and Catholic Sabha, Barkur unit to protest against the unilateral increase in electricity charges of agriculture pump set users and domestic users. The meeting which was presided over by Mr B. Shantharam Shetty was addressed by Mr P. Vishwsnath Rai, President, Electricity Consumers' Forum, Udupi Taluk, Mr M. Karkada, Prsident, Udupi District Raitha Sangha and Mr Jacob A. Menezes, Convenor of Electricity Consumers' Forum, Nejar. Rev. Fr. Sylvester D'souza, Parish Priest, St. Peter's Church, Barkur, Mr B. Kasim Saheb, Secretary, Udupi District Minority Commission, Mrs Bhrathi Kamath, President, Barkur Panchayath were the guests.

With facts and figures the speakers informed the gathering about the percentage of increase in electricity bills and the need to unite and protest the decesion of the Government of handing over the properties (more than 45 thousand crores) of the electricity department to the private and unilateral increase in electricity charges. They stressed the need of educating the consumers. As per the resolution taken during the meeting it was resolved unanimousely to form the "Electricity Consumers' Forum, Barkur unit" and elected a 16 members committee. The election of the office bearers were conducted during the meeting. The newly elected office bearers are :

Since there was a lot of confusion about paying the bill, correctness of the bill etc., resolution was passed to pay the electricity bills collectively at the K.E.B. Office, Brahmavar on the 2nd  August 2003, Mr Jacob Menezes will assist the consumers on that day to clear the bills.

Mr Alwyn D'Almeida, President of ICYM and Rotaract Club welcomed the gathering and Miss Sabitha Mascarenhas, Secretary, ICYM proposed vote of thanks, Mr Satish Amin, Secretary, Mogaveera Yuvaka Mandala conducted the proceedings.

VANAMAHOTSAVA

On Friday, 25th   July Vanamahotsava was celebrated at Mary knoll High School Auditorium by Rotaract Club and I C Y M, Barkur the programme being sponsored by Forest Department, Udupi Dist. Forest Department has supplied 500 seedlings for distribution.

The programme was presided over by Sr. Leny Crsta, Sister Superior, IHM Convent and Sri B. Chooda Poojary, Retired teacher and President of Milk Producers' Co-op Society, Hosala, Barkur  was the guest of honour. Mrs. Noreen Lobo was the chief guest. An attractive cultural programme was arranged by the students  of Mary knoll High School.

Leadership Training Programme At Barkur

The ICYM unit of Barkur conducted a leadership training programme at Barkur on Sunday, 20th July 2003 in collaboration with ICYM Brahmavar for the youth of Barkur and Brahmavar Parishes and to the youth leaders of Kallianpur Varado.

The training programme was inaugurated by Rev. Fr. Wilfred D'Souza, Asst. Parish Priest of Barkur Parish and Mrs. Hilda Rodrigues of Kallianpur was the resource person. She was honoured for her excellent services she is rendering to the society by Sr. Leny Crasta, Sister Superior, IHM Convent. The newly elected leaders of Varado Youth Council were introduced by Miss Sabitha Mascarenhas and Mr. Glen Monis, President of the Varado Council thanked the youth of Barkur for their help and assistance.

SOCIAL ORGANISATIONS –  FEW LATEST HAPPENINGS AROUND BARKUR- IN SHORT.

Brahmmavar- Barkur Lions club has won Seven Trophies, in various fields, acclaimed the distinction being the ‘Outstanding Unit in the Lion District of Udupi 324 D4’.

At a ceremony held at Town Hall Udupi, the President Mr. B.Shrinivasa Shetty, along with his members was honored by the District Governor Mr. B. Rajeev Shettty.

Former Minister and sitting MLA Mr. Jayaprakash Hegde, has given the call to strengthen the social organizations in the service of humanity. He was releasing the Book “Nageshwara Mahime” written by Mr. K. Anantharama Bangadi. on the occasion of Decennial Function of Shri Kshetra Kachhur Nageshwara Temple, at Kachhur, Barkur and the inauguration of Nageshwara Mantapa. Karkala MLA Mr. H.Gopala Bhandari presided over the function.

The Rotary Club of Barkur recognized the out standing & intellectual students of this area, who passed with distinction in Public examinations in 7th standards and Primary Sections. President of the Rotary Club Mr. N. Bhojaraja Shetty presided over the function held at Pattabhi Ramachandra Temple Hall.

Mr. Raphael Sequeira, Sarabadikadu, Hosala,  Husband of Mrs. Emiliana, Father of   Jacintha, Borgeus, Late Felix, Ivan, Rexon and Vijay expired on 22nd  July due to heart failure at his residence in Barkur.

Computer to Mary knoll High School

The ICYM Silver Jubilee Committee , recently presented a Computer and a Printer worth Rs.36,800, to Mary knoll High School, as a Memorial to the Grand Silver Jubilee celebrations last year, thereby kicking off the Computer Education Drive of the School. In a simple but memorable function which was presided over by Sr. Leny Crasto, Superior, IHM Convent, Barkur, Rev. Fr. Sylvester D'Souza, Parish Priest inaugurated the computer by lighting the lamp. Mr. Herald D'Souza, President and Mr. Kishore Gonsalves, Secretary of Silver Jubilee Celebrations Committee along with Mrs. Noreen Lobo, Animator of ICYM were present during the occasion. Mr. Alwyn D'Almeida, President, ICYM welcomed the gathering and Sr. Vinitha, H.M., Mary knoll High School proposed vote of thanks.

Change in Telephone numbers again....

All telephone numbers starting with the digit  5 in Udupi District will be changed to 7 digits, prefixed by digit 2 effective from 19/07/2003 at 0000 hrs. So an existing telephone number like 562524 will be 2562524 , in accordance with  the National Numbering Plan of BSNL.

SAD DEMISE

Shri Dennis Sequeira of Japkali Kudru, Barkur, son of late Pedru Sequeira, expired this morning (17th July, 2003). Funeral will be held at Barkur, St.Peter's Church at 3.00 p.m. tomorrow – i.e.. Friday 18th July 2003.

We at Barkur website, condole the family members, and pray to Almighty to grant eternal peace to the departed soul.

Dennis Sequeira was ill for quite some time and was in the Hospital and in comma for the last 3 days. In him we lost a learned man and a progressive agriculturist of yesteryears.

IN SHORT AT NATIVES:

Barkur Grama Panchayat has lodged a written complaint to District administration, to bring to their notice, some irregularities while cleaning and removing slit / mud from Arasi Kere.

Mrs. Bharati Kamath and Mr Devdas Hoskere, President and vice President of the Panchayat, respectively, disclosed that out of sanctioned Rs. One Lakh, not even Rs 25,000/= is really spent on the job, moreover the mud removed is parked at the mouth of Tank, eventually going back to lake, as now it rains heavily and the work also stopped!

MILAGRES COLLEGE, KALLIANPUR

Rev. Fr. Fredrick Mascarenhus has taken over the responsibility as Principal of Milagres College Kallianpur, from the out going head of the Institution Rev. Fr. Valerian Mendonca, who will be moving to Pompai College Kirem, near Kinnigoli, as Principal.

It should be recalled here, for Fr. Fredrick, Kallianpur is not new, as in 80’s he was the Head master of Milagres High school. And also served in Mathematics faculty as Lecturer. Before moving to Kallianpur for the second time, he was at Puttur St. Philomena’s College. We wish both of them all success in their new assignments!
