College Building Inaugurated by CM in Barkur

The first official visit, a historical event in the history of Barkur, by Honorable Chief Minister of Karnataka State Mr. H. D.  Kumara Swami was a remarkable one. On Saturday, 18th  March, 2006 at around 2pm. he arrived by the helicopter from Bangalore, and was received  by the former minister and current MLA,  Mr. K. Jayaprakash Hedge and Mr. B. Shantharama Shetty , President, Grama Panchayath, Barkur along with the village dignitaries.

The new building, ‘Smt. Rukmini Shedthi Memorial Government First Grade College,’ Barkur was inaugurated by Honorable Chief Minister in a grand function. At the same time, 'Dr. Gabriel Fernandes College Auditorium' was also inaugurated by Mr. Basavaraj S. Horatti, Minister for Law, in the absence of Mr. Shankara Murthy, Honorable Minister for Higher Education.  Dr V. S. Acharya , Minister for Medical Education and Veterinary Sciences, and the Care taker Minister of Udupi District , inaugurated the new entrance.

Mr. Jayaprakash Hegde, MLA and main supporter of the college presided over the function. Other dignitaries present were  Mrs.  Manorama Madwaraj, Member of Parliament, Udupi,  Mrs. Shobha Nambishan, IAS, Chief Officer, Education Dept, Govt. of Karnataka, Mr. B. N. Shankar Poojary, President,  Zilla Panchayat, Udupi; Mr. K.S Kaveriappa, Honorable Vice Chancellor,  Mangalore Universiy; Mr. K. Prathap Chandra Shetty & Mr. Balakrishna Bhat, MLAs, Mr.  Barkur Sudhakar Shetty, Chief Patron and the President, College Establishment Committee, Vasudha Chemicals, Mumbai, and Mrs. Sudhakar Shetty. Mrs. Shyamala Sudhakar, President of Taluk Panchayath, Udupi; Mr. Bujanga Shetty, Member of Zilla Panchayath, Brahmavar; Mr. Satish Poojary, Barkur, Member, Taluk Panchayath Udupi, Mr.  Ramananda Shetty, President, Grama Panchayath,  Hanehalli were present on this occasion as the special invitees.

Mr.B. Shantharama Shetty, Mrs. M. V. Jayanthi, IAS, College Education Dept. Bangalore, Mr.V.L. Roche, President, Barkur Educational Society (Vidyabhivardhini Sangha), Mr. K. V. Kodanda Ramaiah, Director, College Education Dept.,  Bangalore, Mr. K. K. Nayak, Vice President, College Establishment Committee, Mr. K. Sathyanarayana Udupa, Secretary, Founding and Welcome Committee, and Dr. W. Linda Christi, Joint Director, Mangalore Zone, and Mr. C. Rajashekhar Hebbar, Principal were the other dignitaries present on the dais.

This College is unique in the history of the Govt. Colleges of Karnataka State, where facilities like land, building, furniture, equipment, or supplies etc., are to be provided locally or to be self-supported.  Barkur Educational Society has already given 6 acres of land.   The President of the College Establishment Committee and Patron in Chief of this College,   Mr. Barkur Sudhakar Shetty has already spent Rs. 25 Lakhs for starting the College     and for the construction of the building.  By considering his contribution the Government has renamed the College after his mother’s name as “Smt. Rukmini Shedthi Memorial National Govt. First Grade College”.

The College building construction work is completed at a cost of Rs. 75,00,000.00 (Government Valuation). The College building is mainly sponsored by Mr.  B. Sudhakar Shetty, who is the chief patron of the college, and by Dr. Gabriel Fernandes, Moodahadu village, who was the Alumni of NJC Barkur, presently working as the Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Centre at San Antonio, USA, has donated the programme hall for the college. The hall is aptly named after him as “Dr. Gabriel Fernandes Auditorium". He has contributed more than $12,000.00 for the college.  He has also established Village to College foundation which provides scholarship to needy students on merit for the last 8-10 years.  This year alone, this foundation has distributed Rs. 64,000 for the needy students.

St. Peter’s Association (Barkur), Mumbai, a prominent association of Barkurian Catholics in Mumbai has recently contributed Rs.75,000 for the construction of a class room.

The programme kicked off with the lighting of the lamp by the Chief minister. In his inaugural address, he said, he is honoured to be in Barkur, a historical place. He praised the selfless efforts of Mr. Sudhakar Shetty, Dr. Gabriel Fernandes, Mr. K. Jayaprakash Hegde and others who were instrumental in the establishment of the college. His proposal to provide bicycles to the female high school students from the rural areas in the near future was well received by the crowd. He also added that in the future this college will be given due importance and repair work of the bridge will be expedited. Mrs. and Mr. Sudhakar Shetty were felicitated by Chief Minister.

Speaking at the occasion, Chief Patron of the College, Mr. Barkur Sudhakar Shetty proposed Mid-day meal programme for the college students. He put forward his proposal to the honorable chief minister and said that if the government contributes 50 per cent of the expenditure, the college would bear the balance cost.

The main attraction of the function was mind blowing Bharathanatyam performance by Nrithya Vidushi, Kumari Sushma M. Kamath, Barkur. Later Chief Minister felicitated her.

Mr. Shantharama Shetty, President , College Buliding Inauguration Committee, welcomed the gathering. Mr. Jayaprakash Hegde delivered the presidential address. Mr. K. Sathyanarayana Udupa, Secretary, Founding and Welcome Committee, was felicitated at this juncture. Mr. C. Rajashekhar Hebbar, Principal proposed the vote of thanks. Mr. Ramabhat Sajangadde with his usual impeccable style , conducted the proceedings. Over 3500 people from and around Barkur witnessed the history being written at Barkur.

Creating history is a tradition in the historically rich place, Barkur.  In living up to these traditions, history has been re-written by starting a Govt. First Grade College with BA, B.Com courses of Mangalore University.  This has been done under the able leadership of Shri B. Sudhakar Shetty.  The College is functioning well. The College is generously and willingly supported by The Barkur Educational Society (Vidhyabhivardhini Sangha) and the College is well directed by the present MLA & the former Minister of The Govt. of Karnataka Shri K. Jayaprakash Hegde.

At present, the College is successfully completing its Eighth Academic year with 327 students presently enrolled.  Out of them 223 students are girls and 104 are boys.  For many girls of nearby villages this College is and has been a brilliant ray of hope for their education.  Without this College many dreams would have been left untouched or unfulfilled. Next year we are planning to start courses like B.Sc., BBM, and Information Technology.

During 2006-07 we wish to start BBM & B.Sc. Courses with Computer Science.  Our College is having permanent affiliation from Mangalore University. This College has secured 87% passing results in the year 2005 April Exams of Mangalore University and has given fruitful and meaningful lives to more than 400 students over the last 5 years. Our College has become Ladies’ Volleyball Champions of the university for 3 times and the College cultural team as won more than 20 awards over the last 8 years.

For starting BBM & B.Sc. course we require 12 rooms and well equipped labs. At present we are running short of funds to complete the building programme. College Betterment Committee has decided to display the names of donors who donate more than Rs.5,000/-, for the development of the college, in marble stone and to display the photographs of those who donate more than Rs. 75,000.00.

At present the college requires  funds for the completion following works :

1.Electricity & Lighting arrangements                Rs.  2,50,000.00       ($6,000.00)

2.Water Supply                                            Rs.  1,50,000.00       ($4,000.00)

3.   Office room furnishing                           Rs.  1,00,000.00       ($2,000.00)

The college also needs the following facilities:

1.   Full fledged playground ,2.  Vehicle Stand/Parking lot, 3. Computer Lab,4.   Physics Lab, 5. Generator, 6.Audio & Video facilities,7.Open stage,8.   Duplicating/Copy Machine (Xerox)

UK Konkans elect new office bearers

UK Konkans successfully completed its first term and subsequently elected its new office bearers for the next term.

The newly elected office bearers for the next term (2006-2008) are Stanislaus Mendonca (President), Gratian D’Silva, Barkur, (Vice President), Esthela Vaz (Secretary), Brazil Gomes (Joint Secretary), Michael D’Souza (Treasurer), Margaret D’Souza (Internal Auditor) and Eric D’Souza (Cultural Secretary).

The new office bearers thanked the initiative, hard work and dedication offered by the founder members of UK Konkans and promises to relentlessly carry on the hard work in the coming months with utmost care and dedication to the Konkani community.

UK Konkans: We are one of the pioneer organisations set up exclusively to support Konkani speaking people and promote Konkani cultural and social activities.  UK Konkans provides a platform for all Konkani Christians to keep alive the spirit and flavour of Konkani language.  UK Konkans will strongly support new and budding talents within the Konkani community.

UK Konkans aspire to unite all Konkani speaking people living in the UK and invite all Konkani speaking people to become registered members.  This invite is now extended to all Christians who speak Konkani irrespective of their place of origin.

UK Konkans assures to host various events and activities for its members, thereby providing an opportunity for all to unite and meet and keep the Konkani flame alive in our hearts.
