Sincere condolences to Bhona Bappu and his sons, daughters, and the grand grand children, on the loss of the Picardo Matriarch, Mrs Elizabeth Picardo. She was named after the famous British Queen Elizabeth, as was customary then prior to India's independence, a reputation she kept in her own rights. Eliz Maushi was a queen indeed. The queen Bee to raise so many children, she was there cooking the best of meals at anyone's wedding, singing the appropriate cultural songs/hymns/prayers, voviyos for any occasion, for first communion, funeral, or monthi fest, or for any occasion.

She was there visiting the sick, irrespective  of religion. She was generous, not only giving away grains, fruits, food, or clothes, but in helping quite a few less fortunate people. I still remember her, especially for, she gave me an extra piece of fish, when I ate in her house at the month's mind mass when her little daughter died being bitten by a mad dog, a sad death indeed.

Yes, a piece of fish is worth remembering, but............ If she is not in heaven today, I wonder, who else can there be?

Hi Antony: I like your analogy: "Peeling the Onion!" Just for the sake of discussion: I have peeled many an onions, thinking, that each peel is protecting something precious, or hiding something in its core, like a 'Cure for Cancer, Diabetes, or controlling Anger'. In order to keep it safe whatever it is hiding or protecting, it produces an eye-irritating vaporing substance, so that one may not peel its inner core any more. But Antony, has anyone  found what it protects? It appears, it protects nothing, and it's still holding on to it's 'nothing'! Can that nothing be something, someday, and will it be revealed to someone, like the 'Apples always fall down, and not up.? I met an angry man the other day: He was holding his fist very tight, and his face was red. I smiled and asked him what are you holding in your fist? He said," nothing." "If there is nothing, why you have to hold it so tight?" At first, his fist became more tight, and I backed for about six feet! Finally, he smiled, and let his fist relax. I asked him, what were you angry for? "For nothing, never mind.!"

Yes, folks, we get angry for nothing, and such nothing we hold on for years and years? Is this 'something to think about, or is this all but 'nothing?'

James Fernandes, USA, 31/12/2006

Mr Antony got a point there - one by one old customs and traditions getting disappeared together with old values. I got the interesting answers from some people - robbers and part time thieves take advantage of the situation, night sleep is lost, hence second day no mood, priests have hectic day as they have to celebrate day masses too, to attend the mid night service almost one have awaken till 2 o clock and distant people still longer night!!!!!

Once a while for say 3 days in a year all these can be or can not be tolerated.....!!!!???? With regards,

Peeling the onion... This time the Christmas mass was at 8.00p.m. It was not long ago that we used to have the mass outside the church at midnight under starry sky. Carols used to start at 11.30 and mass would be begin just before midnight. "mahima devaak" would happen at around 12 midnight and church bells will ring joyously to sync with it. But sadly this time celebration ended before it was supposed to begin. At 10pm, 24th of December we were wishing MERRY CHRISTMAS(?). One friend of mine (rightly) wished me "Advanced Merry Christmas".

I don’t know who took the decision but majority of the people seem to be unhappy with it. Question is almost same - why cant we make time for midnight masses only thrice in a year and make them special. I felt as if we are peeling the skins of traditions - one by one, like peeling the onion.

First we felt its cold to have the mass outside. Now we are feeling its difficult to attend the mass at midnight. What would we be left with eventually? Are not these festivals meant to bring a ray of change in normal routine of life? Why are we changing them for our silly conveniences and killing very spirit of them. If not at midnight, at least let the mass start 10 / 10.30 p.m. so that when we come out to wish each other, let it be December 25th, let it really be Christmas...!!

Antony, Kudru,27/12/2006

But, our ancestor Barkurians were mighty great and affluent people. they did not walk, as Moses, Samson or Jesus did. If so, how come the following song existed over a century ago?

The song "Aunm Saiba Barkurghar, "Aunm Bovntha Motarar,... was coined, written, with solphan, notes, and in poliphony voices, not without reason, or cause. Who says, Bakurians were paupers. Can some proper Barkurian furnish the remaining lyrics?

James Fernandes, USA, 27/12/2006

Son after returning home after midnight mass,

"Hi Pop, Can I borrow your car?"

"Yes, as soon as you get your long over due hair cut." "But Pop, Moses had long hair, Samson had long hair, and so did Jesus."

"You are right son. All of them walked wherever they went.

James Fernandes, USA, 26/12/2006

Just ONE line to state... It was really wonderful to be there in Barkur for the 'HODLEN FEST' . Great Choir, the Church looked awesome and of course a team of great guys or one can say devoted parishioners... God Bless Barkurians as always...

When you give to others, actually you give to yourself. This is what I mean: A farmer whose rice always took the first prize at the annual Barkur village fair had the habit of sharing his best rice seeds with all the farmers in the neighborhood. When someone asked, "Why on earth you share your best seeds! You will lose next year!" "This is where, actually, self interest comes in, my dear fellow. Actually, I am being selfish by sharing these seeds.

You see, the wind picks up the pollen and carries from field to field. So, if my neighbors were to grow inferior rice, the cross pollination would bring down the quality of my own rice. That's why I am concerned that they plant the very best." Yes, folks, I don't lose anything by writing to this site! The material I copied is still in the original! It's easier and better to milk the cow when the udder full. Don't wait till barkuronline.com goes dry! You receive by giving.
