Hats off to Kishoo Barkur

It is thrilling news for all of us to read ‘Rupnim’ a collection of 10 konkani short stories written by Kishoo, Barkur has won the prestigious Konkani Sahithya Academy’s literature Award for this year. It is indeed a great achievement for Kishore, as ‘Rupnim” is his only second published book, after “Dhactya Devachin Burgin’. Congratulations and hats off to Kishore for achieving this milestone, at this early stage. We Barkurians feel proud of him as he is placed among the top writers in Konkani today. In his ten stories in this collection, Kishoo has depicted and described various personalities, situations, experiences which resemble with many in their daily life, attracts every reader. I wish and pray that he comes out with many more such stories in the future, to uphold the Konkani literature. Whilst I congratulate him again, on winning the Award, appreciate the support and inspiration given by his wife Marina, his family members and friends.

I take this opportunity to congratulate Stan Ro (for novel Shirap) and Mick Max   (for Theen Thiaathr) who also have won the Konkani Sahithya Academy’s literature award this year along with Kishoo.

Dear Mr. Alvares,

What sort of co-operative farming you propose...?

Our holdings not only, small, sub-devided, but hopelessly fragmented...! Over and above, they are un-even, hence any mode of scientific, modern machine oriented agriculture looks distant possibility...!..? At the same time, people's psyche does not embrace this concept so easily.

Only way I feel fit will be to introduce Tillers, Water irrigation system and use of high yeild variety seeds and mix cultivation of cash crops wherever possible.

However, I appriciate, your concern and goodwill towards the forgotten lot - so called FARMER.

Hello Friends,

Fine, at last we come to know the person behind this splendid work on this site, Mr. Kishoo Barkur, through this report on youth activities. Normally, all site managers affix a picture of promoters in the welcome page, but this is a rare exception, moreover, I feel we the visitors have a right to see the Host and all major contributers!

One more appeal, we would like to read little more on Historical background  of this town. I went through the archieves, and more than happy to find some unknown facts, special thanks to all these writers, like Ms Divya, Mr.Harry, Santegudde friends. Of course, I will be wrong, if I don't mention  Archie's Corner, which contains one of the best articles on Chauli Kere.

All the best for awakening the Barkurian Spirits!! Keep publishing nice pure jokes too...

Bhaskar L. Poojary, Mumbai, 15/10/02.

Dear readers and people from farming fraternity,

In these days, irratic behaviour of RAIN, played havoc at native place, as the Monsoon crop ready for harvest, terribly damaged. As it is said wearer  knows where the shoe really pinches, the poor Farmer, who totally depending upon Agriculture, suffering a lot.To all such, nature's intolerence, and labour problems, I feel Modern Mehanical Co-operative Farming, looks to  be the best answer.Do this site evoke any public opinion on this.....?

M.M.Alvares, alvaresmm@hotmail.com 15/10/02.

Dear friends,

I am extreemly delighted to see that the youth groups along with other social organisations are conducting de-addiction camps. It is really a great help to the society and to the families which suffered a lot due to  the decease of alcohol.

I wish more and more such programmes must be organised. And the youth groups should take the leadership. Thanks to Rotary, Sastan and ICYM, Barkur  and all others who involved in this noble cause.

Association of Ex Members of ICYM-Barkur

It is once again not surprisingly Archie is coming out with a noble idea of forming an association of ex members of ICYM, Barkur, during the year in which this unit is celebrating its silver jubilee (Ref. Archie's Corner).  Members in these 25 years scattered now all over the world earning their livelihood cherish the memories of their days in ICYM, still want to remain attached to it in one way or other.  For those who would like to do something more for ICYM and the church, to those who would like to rejoin and represent in the parish through a common platform, to those who are looking for a stage to come out with their talents and leadership qualities be exposed, this would be an ideal media by which they can regroup together once again. I welcome the idea of forming this association, which would be represented by ex members of CYM, their spouses and well wishers and expect ex members to join hands with Archie to give a proper shape to his proposal, when they meet in Barkur during the Silver Jubilee celebrations in December this year. After all, it is very true that "United we stand"

It's a great pleasure to see Henry being recognized as the
personality of the month. I would like to expand on what Harry said about Henry being of 'helping nature.'  A Maharastrian friend of mine was getting married in Bombay. He could not get a bus to rent to get his folks to the wedding hall. I came to know a day before the wedding, so I called Henry for help.  Henry's busses were booked too. However, Henry managed to get one of
his bus fixed, managed to find a new driver, (his regular drivers were booked) and on the day of wedding, Henry picked up the driver from driver's home, and made sure the bus reached the destination  on time because the 'auspecious' time of the wedding was very early in the morning.  After all these physical hassles, my friend the groom was charged less than half of the going rate!  Henry, thanks again for your generosity. You are known to walk an extra mile in whatever you do.  A belated Sixtieth birthday, my frind!  The sugar canes I used to 'knock down'(a milder word for stealing)from your fields were much sweeter than the
ones your pappa used to distribute to the neighborhood children at harvest time!!  I used to stand in line for the free ones too!  Thanks again.
