Milagres College Kallianpur is in news in recent times both in sports / games and academic excellence! I feel proud to be an old student of this prestigious Institution, to read, that as many as THREE RANKS secured by the students, in the April 2002, University Examinations.

Russell Mathew Angelo Fernandez – B.Com. 83.35% - 8th Rank

Rennitha Sharon Monis – B.A. - 91.93% - 5th Rank.

Usha Kiran Shetty – B.A. – 91% - 9th Rank.

We take this opportunity to congratulate these rank holders, who brought glory to this College and to the best of my memory this is the first time – three ranks!

Principal Rev.Fr. Valerian Mendonca and his team of dedicated lecturers also deserve appreciation!

It is timely, to remember here, in the beginning of the academic year, big hue and cry was made in the College, that the members to the ‘Students Council’ were nominated by the Mgmt. rather elected. Now it looks to be a good experiment, and me being studied in the same College and unnecessarily involved in election politics in 1979-82, now feel neglected our studies! Well-done dear students and thanks to the Mgmt for innovative moves!! Keep it up!!

Dear Host,Mr Kishoo Barkur,

Why don't you affix a small photograph of Mr Lawrence A. Sequeira, another proud gentleman, of this tiny town Barkur? Excellent, narration by the author! I heard of your Association in Mumbai,  from Babu Shiva Poojary.

Meanwhile accept our compliments and write few lines of your stories either in Kannada or English,  translation of full story preferred, on this award winning work, to satisfy our curiocity.I am really surprised to see you all  -  colourful people, from BARKUR!!!

Dear Friends -  specially Mr Alvares and Mr. Philiph,

Let  me  share a point or two on the subject you raised over here:

We all are witnesses of sea change in the agricultural fields in Canara. To a certain degree -  the land reforms, similarly, other options now available, like cottage industries to women labor, income from other sources, family planning and education to all, small un-economical holdings,  all such factors contributed in different magnitudes to neglect farming.

On our vacation, it really hurt me to see fertile land left unutilized!! We too are not growing 3-4 acres of one crop fields, and where 2 crops grown earlier, only one now, that too at loss!

I understand from some farmers, that there is profit in Vegetable Farming, in these  days as the one time craze for coconut plantation, too faded away.

So I feel, it is a personal approach and choice of every farmer to go for scientific or  continue with orthodox way of cultivation.

But the scenario elsewhere, is not different, day-by-day, educated people get less  attracted by this primary sector, really alarming in the long run.

Thanks and regards,

G.S.Lewis, Kallianpur, 20/10/2002
