Thanks to Mr. Manoj, my good friend, for your kind introduction of 'BONGA' a one time  coconut plucking hero of our Barkur. I still remeber when I was in Barkur during my college days ,we used to sit normally in the evening near the cross (Khuris). One such day we were sitting  and chatting in the evening, and it was getting dark , suddenly one guy was passed nearby us very fast and all of us in one word, asked loudly  WHO IS THIS !?( yaaar addh?). and  the guy answered with all his might but politely said ' naan boagaaa' ( I am Bonga).

The name "Bonga " is neither derived from any Chinese dictionary nor Japanese language or from any snack named from Kannada language. But he is none other than our own Bakurian coconut tree climber. He is an authorized coconut tree climber because of his skills are   hereditary.

He is  five feet with normal physique, somehow  looks like Charlie Chaplin. He walks like him if he had 3 pegs of arrack. His eyesight is ok but his hearing is very weak. So whenever he climbs the tree if you are not telling in advance which coconut to pick, which palm to trim, then you  will end up in a disaster. Our catholic women  are particularly vulnerable having -hard time with him because of his hearing. Once he is on top of the tree, he won't hear what they say. You should see the faces of those women when he is down!

His other profession is to arrange the cock fighting somewhere near the arrack shop. He is a master to tie the “Bhaal” (a special knife used for cock fighting) . He is so popular; people from near by villages are consulting  with him to arrange the cock fighting and to choose the cock. If you are really interested in seeing him and to arrange to pick the coconut, he is available in   "Sharabidi kadu" arrack shop. If you offer him something, say two pegs, you may get an advance appointment.

Now he is old, staying at home, his son "Appanna" is continuing his job. Poor fellow Bonga even  his eyesight is not too clear. Unless you go next to him and scream your name he will recognize and give his warm smile.
