Dear Barkur.com brothers and sisters

I am extremely happy to visit your (our) barkur.com Congratulations to your good work. It is a great site to visit. As we visit the site our childhood days we recall. Nothing to compensate those childhood memories. I hail from Udyavara but of course I have relatives in Barkur. When we work away from our motherland, we always crave for our culture, our language and  brotherhood. It is indeed a goodwork of you. May God bless all those who are responsible in bringing out this site Best wishes for a happy New Year

Dr Urban J.A. D`Souza , School of Medical Sciences,  University Science Malaysia,  Malaysia  23/12/2002.

It was a grand function, ICYM Barkur, really created history. Prof.Mathew Ninan's speech, Mr.Uma Shanker's curiocity on Barkur, Mr Hegde's promises, Bishop's praises to Youth  of today and yesterday -  all appreciated by the huge gathering.

Another point astonished me was the oratory skills of Mr. Archibald Furtado, believe me I've seen  people who are good in either writing or effective talking, but this man, inherits both qualities, our  congratulations to him, and the Host of this site, who got honoured!!

A beautiful programme, well organised, by the Youth of Barkur, best wishes again for Wilfy Nite  and seasons greetings to all reader's.

Happy Anniversary Barkur.com

With profound joy and happiness, we wish Barkur.com a very happy anniversary. Congratulationto the Host Mr. Kishore Gonsalves and his team. We appreciate the hard work and time put in by the various writers, in providing us the impressive articles in different styles, discussions on various  topics, news of Barkur, and of course the photographs, to make it very interesting for the readers,  for the last one year.  It is a marvelous job. Keep it up. Needless to say Mr. Kishore is spending a lot of his personal time on this to compile and air it everyday, despite of his engagement in many other social activities. Many thanks to you Kishoo.

It has become a habit for all of us including our  children to login in to the site everyday and look for new things in it. We hope this site will come up  with new columns and more writers will join them in the years to come. We wish www.barkur.com a  very long and useful life in the cyber world.

Friends,
I'm delighted to run through the News on web pages, nice  photographs of Deepa of Temple Kalikamba.

I'm also startled to note Barkur is the first place in the whole of India, where Christian religion introduced first.

I also request more information on this or hope the editor of Book ICYM souvenir, Mr. Archie and his team,  take care to include more information. Good foreword, a cosmopolitan approach, which is  need of the day.

The host deserve special pat for his compsosition of clean and attractive snaps.

I too agree with Mr. James, also request, his comments in these pages surely educative.

Best wishes,

Bhaskar L. Poojary.  bhatganeshb123@rediffmail.com 11/12/2002

Barkur, as we all know,a famous place from the Historical time, and still today,  for one or the other reason. It is a center place for the neighboring villages and towns, as many people from the surrounding places are gathering and visiting Barkur for all kinds of trade, communication, educational facilities, political meetings, social functions, traditional festivals, marriages etc.

One such important event of this place is "Weekly Friday market", (Shukravara Santhe) where lot of people from neighboring villages gather here early in the morning to mid day. People are busy  with selling groceries, fresh vegetables, fruits, fresh coconuts cultivated and grown from their own field. One of the most important item of this Friday market is fresh Spinach and shells .Fisherwomen are busy  selling fresh fish from  rivers and sea caught early in the morning. We also see people competiting among themselves for buying the fish. People from far away, are in a hurry to buy the vegetables and fish early in the morning, then have breakfast in nearby restaurant, eager to go home before noon and prepare fresh fish curry and have a good lunch. The Friday market's fish and vegetables curry has its own special taste  than any other normal day meal. Those who could not afford to buy river fish due high price get disappointed and sometime complain to their neighbors about the skyrocketing price of the fish , as some people from the Gulf (!?) buy the fish, without any bargaining!! They come to the market with the hope  to buy the river fish but go back without having any other choice than taking the sea fish, which is cheaper compared to the fish from the river.

Fresh vegetables vary from season to season. From September to May  one  can see almost all types of vegetables, and from March to May it is the season for fruits, mainly jack fruits, mangoes, Sweet potatos etc. Apart from these people are also going for dry goods brought  from mountains.

It is nice to see people carrying bags  filled with these goodies in their
hands from the market. In total Friday gives Barkur a different atmosphere, a complete changeover from the normal days.

Now-a-days one can observe that this great Friday Market is loosing its charm and glamour, and it is loosing its traditional style. One can see now very few people in and around the market, few people are seen buying and selling  and the goods are of poor quality, .In total the atmosphere looks like dead. We are moving to modern era and this Friday market looks like still under-developed. The concerned authorities should  take enough interest to bring back the glory of this Friday market and do someting to improve the standard and tradition of this famous market,so as to attract more and more people.
