Dear Friends,

I am happy to look at the news items that appeared in barkur site,  the youth from Barkur are doing wonders these days. ICYM has recently  celebrated its silver jubilee in a meaningful way and now its the term of youth of Simhasana Gudde, they have successfully organized such a big event, they brought so many budding cricketers to Barkur   and conducted the Hills Trophy. They certainly need appreciation from  all. Well done friends and Congrats !!

Folks:

The following message I received, is worth sharing with Barkur.com readers:

In the spirit of diversity awareness we wanted everyone to be aware that this is Black History Month, February. The following is a list of African American individuals who have made a significant impact on our lives in America, and all over the world.  You may not know……….:

Alexander Mils, a black man, invented the elevator, and without it one finds great difficulty reaching high floors.

Richard Spikes, a black man, invented the automatic gear shift. Joseph Gammell, also black, invented the Super Charge System for Internal Combustion Engines, and Garrett A. Morgan invented the traffic signals.

The precursor to today's rapid transit, system the electric trolley, was invented by another black man, Elbert R. Robinson.

An African American, Charles Brooks, invented the street sweeper.

John Love invented the pencil sharpener, William Purvis invented the fountain pen, Lee Burridge invented the Type Writing Machine and A.Lovette  invented the Advanced Printing Press.

William Barry invented the Postmarking and Canceling Machine, William Purvis invented the Hand Stamp and Phillip Downing invented the Letter Drop.

Joseph Smith invented the Lawn Sprinkler and John Burr the Lawn Mower.

Frederick Jones invented the Air Conditioner and Alice Parker the Heating Furnace. Lewis Latimer invented the Electric Lamp, Michael Harvey invented the Lantern and Granville T. Woods invented the Automatic Cut off Switch.

Thomas W. Steward invented the Mop and Lloyd P. Ray, the Dust Pan.

Jan E. Matzelinger invented the Shoe Lasting Machine, Walter  Sammons invented the Comb, Sarah Boone invented the Ironing Board and George T. Samon invented the Clothes Dryer.

Another black man, John Standard invented the refrigerator.

What would this world be like without the contributions of Black people?

Martin Luther King, Jr. said, "Modern America is created by dependencies on the inventions from the minds of Black folks."

Black history includes more than just slavery, Frederick Douglass, Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcolm X, Marcus Garvey and Dubois. Black history is  American History and the History of America would not be so, without Black people.

Three cheers to our Sihasanegudde cricketers, for hosting the big  event everheld in  history of cricket in Barkur. It was sheer determination and hard work put up by the committee members of gudde cricketers.  Well I found myself happy to go through the pictures and see how well it had been organized. Though I missed the live feel of it ,yet I felt ............ keep it up !! !

It was a saddest moment in my life to see the falling debris of shuttle Columbia which carried Dr.Kalpana Chawla and others. Every piece of the shuttle which were falling on the earth were piercing the hearts of all.

The hard work and determination of Kalpana will be a source of inspiration to every Indian.  One day NASA will be filled with many Kalpana Chawlas' from India! She will continue to live in our hearts forever.

All Barkurian's and Parishioner's,

We the Ex-Members of ICYM Barkur, far and near, delighted to see the various projects, commemorating the Silver Jubilee Celebrations, getting executed. Now, one such promise by our popular MLA Mr.Jayaprakash Hegde, to build a compound wall, at the right side of the Church, has been completed in a record short time!

When people see promises by politicians, hollow, MR HEGDE is a rare exception, our congratulations and heartfelt thanks to him!! It is our wish and prayers to Almighty to give him strength and good health, to serve this constituency, state and nation in a selfless manner and set an example to others.

On behalf of ICYM Ex-Member's Association,

P.Archibald Furtado, SECRETARY.

Dear Friends,

As Mr. Lewis rightly said, our district so to say undivided Dakshina Kannada administration hardly hurt minority sentiments. One more appreciable gesture, I would like to add in this context is, the Mangalore university's management’s decision to keep status-quo on Chirstmas holidays!

We heard of lot of pressures / tricks from a very small section community, to cancel this privilege enjoyed by us over the years!! Through this small note, we express our sincere thanks to concerned authorities. Please publish such articles very often, as you are doing now, to keep the harmony and brotherhood in this society.

Dear Friends,

It must be divine providence or for few just a co-incidence, that New Year started in the ‘Archie’s Corner’ with Udupi Festival – 2003, with a special reference to Barkur and its re-focusing by the authorities of District Government.

To add a point, as the Milagres Parish Feast – 21st & 22nd Jan .03 and the well known Karkal St. Lawrence Feast 28th – 30th Jan. 2003 - two great celebrations of mass participation, also mark the beginning and concluding of week long Utsav, surely a goodwill gesture of organizers.

I am one among them, to miss any mention of this Utsav, in Daiji Dubai portals.

Anyhow I will take this opportunity to thank the Udupi Administration, especially when certain parts of Nation see our Christian community with suspicion and hatred.

With best wishes,

G.S.Lewis, Kallianpur, gslewis123@hotmail.com. 27/01/03
