The word necromancy, itself picked up from
two Greek terms meaning corpse and divinition. It is a belief that the
future can be discovered by communicating with the spirits of the dead. Barkurgar. 07/03/2003 Dear Barkurians especially ICYM Members,
We congratulate you all, for this wonderful
unity and friendship with a aim to help fellow youngsters. I was a
regular reader of Diocesan Konkanni weekly Raknno, as it was an
anticipation to hear through its pages, of this Silver jubilee, I am
very much disappointed not to see a small mention or have I MISSED ONE
OF THE Philiph Richard, 07/03/2003 Necromancy Mr. Vijay Suvarna, in his reminiscences of Barkur brings out a very interesting topic, necromancy. He is probably right in implying that necromancy is nothing but bull’s dung. I too tend to agree with him to some extent. When someone claims to be able to communicate with the dead, the logical explanation would be that the necromancer is lying. Crafting a carefully worked out presentation that either relies on foreknowledge and research, or paying close attention to clues in the speech, mannerisms and facial expressions of the person whose dead loved one they are pretending to communicate with. The necromancer may tell what a person wants to hear. This may hold true in most of the cases; who cheat or take advantage of the ignorance and human weakness, as noticed by Vijay, and several people may agree with him to some extent. There is a 50% chance that either the necromancer is lying or telling the truth that he is really conveying the message from the dead. However, the website ‘Catholic Encyclopedia’, found at http://www.newadvent.org, has plenty to talk about ‘Necromancy.’ For the sake of brevity, I am quoting the following, without any personal opinion: “Necromancy is a special mode of divination by the evocation of the dead…… Along with other forms of divination, necromancy is found in every nation….., and is a practice common ….. at all times and in all countries, but nothing certain can be said as to the place of its origin…… There are chapters like ‘Necromancy in pagan countries’, ‘Necromancy in the Bible’, ‘Necromancy in the Christian Era’, etc.” The article is concluded as follows: “The Church does not deny that with a special permission of ‘GOD’, the souls of the departed may appear to the living, and even manifest things unknown to the latter. But understood as the art or science of evoking the dead, necromancy is held by theologians to be due to the agency of ‘evil spirits’, for the means taken are inadequate to produce the expected results. In pretended evocations of the dead, there may be things explainable naturally or due to fraud; how much is real and how much must be attributed to imagination and deception, cannot be determined, but real facts of necromancy, with the use of incantations and magical rites are looked upon by theologians, …… as special modes of divination, due to demonical intervention, and divination itself is a form of superstition.” Personally speaking, fifty years ago, if I were to place lighted candles (each) on the backs of some live turtles and if I were to let them free in a cemetery or on a public cremation ground on a dark new-moon night, some one would have surely believed, that these turtles were ghosts, spirits or dead ones reborn as turtles! Pranksters: Please don’t try this, and don’t play with fire! Perhaps the erudite intellectuals may share their knowledge with us. Sharing serious knowledge is the highest form of charity. Thank you. Dear Kishoo, Barkur
I will be delighted if you could forward this message to
Prof Somayaji.
I was very happy and delighted to read the months
personality report of my
beloved teacher Prof Somayaji. Congratulations Barkur.com
Down the memory lane, I was a student of Dr Somayaji for a
long period of 5 years at Poornaprajna. Indeed words of Prof
Somayaji are very true as he
has always lighted the lamp in his students by
elevating them to the greater
hights. With his blessings today I too is a academic
Associate Professor in Malaysia`s one of the reputed
Government Medical University. During my study period I
proudly say I found a Professor who is a model in everything
and that is Prof Somayaji. Still I do remember his way of
teaching where the difficult chemistry, he used to make
simple in his teaching by his chemistry of oration and self
demonstrations. Indeed he is a ardent and one of the best
teacher whom I found in my life I am presently working in
Medical University Sains Malaysia.
I hail from Udyavara
Kindly forward my mail to Prof Somayaji .
