Piti Dalmeid, a popular figure of Barkur, and a household name in Halekody, no more, a social human being, who fathered a large family and innumerable admirers in the surrounding, he and family supposed to be the pirjenth, of this year's Parish Feast, alas, I can’t imagine the trauma of the family, especially at this juncture, May the departed soul rest in eternal peace! Understand from coming Monday, Brahmmavar, weekly market, will get a new look, unlike Barkur, this SAANTH is a full day affair, Barkur Friday fair, only naam ka vaste, in these days by 10.00a.m. everything finishes. One more thought provoking effort by Archibald Furtado, feel such subjects to be discussed in a wider perspective, naturally the scope at barkur.com is small, because it caters the need of us Barkurians, since such topics are sensitive, better and honest opinions of reader's flowing out, looks doubtful. Surely, this is not to discourage you, dear Host, it is better to light a candle, rather walking in darkness, keep it up....! I'm really impressed by a message from W.Lobo, the concept of Twin Cities, Tourist spot, will be fulfilled by Historical reactivation, and scientific preservation at Barkur, if not done it will be only in papers!! Barkurgar. 09/04/2003. Friends, Barkurgar & Host, Barkur.com always remembers the contributions and services of Rev.Fathers Tauro, Henry or Patrick, they deserve, same time, we the elder generation of 50's and 60's grateful to Rev. Fathers Bernard D'Souza, Mark Walder, Mark D'Sa, who were equally qualified, influential and talented and served as assistants under Rev. Fr. Aloysius Rosario, of artistic belfry fame, who I feel the architect of modern Barkur Parish, was with us for 14 long years.
Fine, a drop of ink, make millions to think for a while, feel you choose
Philip Richard (Senior Barkurgaar). 09/04/2003 Dear Friends, Seven Years duration for a parish priest is longer or short, is not subjective!..? In other words, if the so called priest is talented, lovable and impartial, any parishners will be happy with him for even 14 Years!! One may be surprised, Msgr.Denis J.D’Souza, the father of Milagres College, served here in Kallianpur, for more than 30 years!!! I personally feel this 7 years limit got introduced in 70’s just to bring a balance, as during 50’s and earlier, there was no uniformity of tenure, and in general, a priest used to serve an average of 10 years in a single Church. Moreover I too endorse Archie’s opinion – If a parish smaller in size, doesn’t have an assistant, for an elderly priest, 7 Years is too longer a period to bear, as present generation children deprived of certain merits!! Just to add a point – since there is acute shortage of good priests, and out of them in our diocese, about 10 -15% serving as administrators of Hospitals, charitable organisations, as teachers and lecturers etc, I feel these responsibilities can be handled by laity and priests may devote their services in religious fields and Five Year Term is ideal in present scenario. With best wishes, G.S.Lewis, Kallianpur, 07/04/2003. Like father, like son, as the well known sayings goes, the essay by Harshith Padre, 'Manukulada seveye namma kayaka', an eye opener to all of us elders, it inherited the qualities of his talented father - an effective columnist popular teacher of N.J.College Barkur, Mr. Rama Bhat's features. Of course I was not a student of Mr.Bhat, but my sisters, always used to tell me his classic way of teaching and special liking for Bernard Shaw and his quotes. Many a times gone through his impressive writings in Udayavani, and now his son Harshith made the beginning, we congratulate Harshith, and also invite Lecturer Rama Bhat, to be a regular contributor to this website, as many of his students scattered over the nook and corner of this globe surely like to refresh their pleasant memories. Actually Banana contains potassium to relax you, vitamin C for vitality, and vitamin B6 to help combat stress. They also produce serotonin, which helps prevent depression. So, whenever you are feeling a bit low, or lacking in energy, just have a Banana. Bananas are also very useful if you are interested in loosing weight, as they are very filling and can satisfy your need for something sweet. You might have observed that, tennis players are always nibbling on the fruit, mid-match as a source of energy. Adding a chopped Banana to your breakfast cereal (or just mix with pressed rice (Avalakki and milk) will provide a long lasting energy burst. And will help fill you up to avoid mid – morning hunger pangs. Bananas are so good for you it seems silly to count the calories, but a medium sized one is about 110calories. Students who are studying for exams and feeling peckish or need an excuse for break can enjoy a Banana as it has beneficial effects on mental energy levels. Banana and whole meal bread or there’s that old childhood favorite a banana sandwich (with Chapathi) make an ideal first thing-in the morning snack to help alleviate morning sickness. So, make sure you have a Banana every day. VIJAY BARKUR, (Vijay Suvarna) Qatar. 4/04/2003 Here is a pretty neat little thing from Paul Harvey. See if you can guess the riddle at the end. Paul Harvey Writes: We tried so hard to make things better for our kids that we made them worse. For my grandchildren, I'd like better. I'd really like for them to know about hand me down clothes and homemade ice cream and leftover meat loaf sandwiches. I really would. I hope you learn humility by being humiliated, and that you learn honesty by being cheated. I hope you learn to make your own bed and mow the lawn and wash the car. And I really hope nobody gives you a brand new car when you are sixteen. It will be good if at least one time you can see puppies born and your old dog put to sleep. I hope you get a black eye fighting for something you believe in. I hope you have to share a bedroom with your younger brother/sister. And it's all right if you have to draw a line down the middle of the room, but when he wants to crawl under the covers with you because he's scared, I hope you let him. When you want to see a movie and your little brother/sister wants to tag along, I hope you'll let him/her. I hope you have to walk uphill to school with your friends and that you live in a town where you can do it safely. On rainy days when you have to catch a ride, I hope you don't ask your driver to drop you two blocks away so you won't be seen riding with someone as un-cool as your Mom. If you want a slingshot, I hope your Dad teaches you how to make one instead of buying one. When you learn to use computers, I hope you also learn to add and subtract in your head. I hope you get teased by your friends when you have your first crush on a boy\girl, and when you talk back to your mother that you learn what ivory soap tastes like. May you skin your knee climbing a mountain, burn your hand on a stove and stick your tongue on a frozen flagpole. I hope you learn to dig in the dirt and read books. I don't care if you try a beer once, but I hope you don't like it. And if a friend offers you dope or a joint, I hope you realize he not your friend. I sure hope you make time to sit on a porch with your Grandma/Grandpa and go fishing with your Uncle. May you feel sorrow at a funeral and joy during the holidays. I hope your mother punishes you when you throw a baseball through your neighbor's window and that she hugs you and kisses you at Hanukah/Christmas time when you give her a plaster mold of your hand. These things I wish for you – tough times and disappointment, hard work and happiness. To me, it's the only way to appreciate life. Written with a pen. Sealed with a kiss. I'm here for you. And if I die before you do, I'll go to heaven and wait for you. Send this to all of your friends. We secure our friends, not by accepting favors, but by doing them. Paul Harvey RIDDLE: When asked this riddle, 80% of kindergarten kids got the answer, compared to 17% of Stanford University seniors: What is greater than God, more evil than the devil, the poor have it, the rich need it, and if you eat it, you'll die? James Fernandes, USA. 04/04/2003 Dear Kishoo and barkur.com team, Congratulations for your excellent work in compiling Barkur.com. I enjoy every bit of it from Kathmandu. I am Sr. Linnet D'Silva from Barkur. Presently at Kathmandu lecturer at Department of Social Work, at St. Xavier's College. The articles, stories, essays and news is very good. All the best for your updates. Wishing your group a Holy Lent. Yours truly, Sr. Linnet, 04/04/2003 It is heartening to note that quite a few eminent personalities of Barakuru and surrounding places are interested in bringing into limelight the past glory of Barakuru. One only can wish them all the best in their worthwhile efforts in developing this place to see its past glory. It could definitely be developed into a tourist centre if we go by the historic importance of this old town as also the natural resources including rivers and islands. Publicity to this cause will definitely reap good dividends. And this publicity of course should be based on authentic and systematically recorded history of this place as pointed out by Archibald. Surely, enough Dr. Jagdish Shetty should be able to give a helping hand in this direction with the support of other learned people of Barakuru. I have a feeling that if anyone looking for the published copy of History of Tulunadu, a part of late Dr. P. Gururaj Bhat’s doctoral works (in early 1970s) probably could be found in the library of Milagres College, Kallianpur. He had researched extensively on Barakuru and you will not be surprised if you find copies of several stone inscriptions (if they are still preserved as is done by the then Epigraphy Association of Milagres College) of historic importance of Barakuru including some stone inscriptions picked up from Bairy Bettu, in Hosala an unknown area to many, I guess.
