Dear Barkurian brothers and sisters,
I left my house almost 30 years ago in search of job and to pursue my
education. After having completed my graduation from
Bombay
University I came to gulf and presently working in Bahrain. I feel
like I am a stranger in my own birthplace when I come on vacation as I
am totally out of touch with my people and friends. Hats off to those
who have dedicated their time to develop the Barkur.com website where
I am able to see people from our place and read news. May good bless
them. I will be soon leaving for
Canada
with my family. Wherever we go and live we can’t forget our place and
our dear people. I want to keep in touch with my Barkurian brothers
and sisters. I shall therefore, greatly appreciate if you could please
provide me contact details, e. mail addresses of all Barkurians living
in Bahrain or in
Canada.
Please keep in touch.
Regards

Dear
Friends and Barkurians,
Once
again the Feast of Nativity of Blessed Virgin Mother Mary at our
doorsteps. Since childhood this feast has a special importance to us,
especially Mangaloreans over the World unite in diversity, where-ever they
are, to sing praises and
hymns in honour of heavenly Queen.
In
Gulf countries and in Mumbai the day is celebrated with pomp and religious
fervour, so is at natives.
Being
Sunday today, searched in this site, but found nothing special, may be
host up-dating something tomorrow for us. Whole of last year Archie used
to narrate or to come-out with a special article for every such
celebration, but now-a-days I miss him....! or someone else of his caliber
should take initiative...? This is my personal feeling.
I
may be moving out of the subject, friends, me and my family wish each one
of you a Happy Monthi-Feast of divine Happiness and heavenly contentment,
May Monthi Saibhin Bless all of in abundance. All barkur.com host and team
members a special thanks.

7
types of vegetables? Or 9 or 11 may be 13? Vorn (Payasam…!!)?? and we
debate if its sin to eat meat/fish ? I guess its sin to eat anything,
forget about meat or fish as long as we don’t bother about millions of
children like these around the world…!
Dear
God,
I
promise I will never waste my food no matter how bad it can taste and how
full I may be. I pray that He will protect this little boy, guide and
deliver him away from his misery. I pray that we will be more sensitive
towards the world around us and not be blinded by our own selfish nature
and interests. AMEN.
Happy
Monthi Feast, anyways....

The
First ever "Gurkarn" - Ready to take charge of Nagermutt Ward.
Just today I had to hear from Barkur that, Mrs. Zita Fernandez wife of
Post Master Mr. Jerome J.
Fernandez is all set to become the first ever lady GURKARN of Nagermutt
Ward.
It
is a welcome move and a best decision of Ward Members, under the given circumstances,
as Mr. Marcel Andrade has to leave the place for personal reasons.
For
years together, at Barkur Parish Nagermutt is famous for taking,
revolutionary steps and in the forefront in all fields like,
socio-cultural-religious spheres. Being a Nagermut-gar I herewith send our
hearty congratulations Mrs. Zita Fernandez
and praise fellow natives of this beautiful place, for taking such a
step to give an opportunity to females to lead the ward, give best of your
co-operation and support to her and I'm confident she will do full justice
to preserve the name the
place earned over the years and to bring more glory and
development.
Once
again wish you all success in your new role Mrs. Fernandes!

I
was very happy to see my good old classmate and friend Mr. Ratnakar
Nambiar's photograph appeared
in News Update on receiving the "BEST TEACHER AWARD", declared by the Karnataka Government on the occasion of the
"Teachers' day".
It
was nice to look at the photo of Ratnakar, whom I have last seen was in
the year 1973. His brother
Ramachandra too was a
good friend of mine and my classmate. My
CONGRATULATIONS to Ratnakar on achieving this prestigious honour and I sincerely wish him very many
accolades in the days ahead.
God
bless him in all his endeavors; specially in the field of TEACHING, a
worthy profession. Best regards

I
think the name `Monthi Saibin' may have been derived from the name `Mont
Mawli' (Marathi) or `Mount Mary' (English). Legend has it that a statue of
Mother Mary was found in the sea at the foot of the mountainous terrain of
Bandra by some fishermen. This statue was kept in a small chapel on the
hilly terrain of Bandra, much later the present day basilica was built.
However, the name given by the Marathi speaking fishermen `Month Mawli'
remained and got modified into Monthi Saibin in Konkani and Mount Mary in
English. Well does this theory sounds plausible! This is just an
assumption! Now for the vegetarian fare for the feast! Basically this
feast somewhat coincides with the new crop and hence it is a combined
celebration of Feast of nativity and harvest. (May be that's why in
Kannada we call it `Hosathu' or in Konkani `Novem'.)

It
is very nice to see all the Photographs of Ganesha Chauthi celebration
back home .
But
I also enjoyed the Ganesh Chauthi organised in Hindu Temple of Wisconsin,
Piwaukee, the place where I stay in USA . Hindu Temple of Wisconsin is a
one of the Famous Hindu Temples in USA. In April 1995, a group of about 60
people gathered to begin planning to build a temple here, and after a
20-acre site in Pewaukee was acquired in 1997, the $4.7 million facility
was finally constructed in 2000. It was a place where about 2,000 Hindu
families in the Milwaukee area could worship. On August 31st we had Ganesh
Chauthi celebration . Where all rituals of Ganesha Pooja were performed.
Procession of Ganesha Moorthi was carried out and Pooja ended with
Mahamangalarathi . It is really nice to see this kind of functions in
Abroad which keep our Hindu culture intact. Some time I get to hear
Purandara Dasara / Kanakadasa Bhajane also here , Since one of the Priest
of this Temple is from our place . So you could see pakka Udupi style
pooja. I feel as if I am in Kurady Eshwara Temple ( My favorite place of
all time ) when ever I go there. I remember last year I was in Barkur for
Ganesh Chauthi and was one among in the Ganesh Idol procession. This year
in Milwaukee. Let Lord Ganesha Bless everybody. Regards,
Rajendra

A thought provoking message by Mr James, to review, if there any blind
beliefs in the mode of celebrating the feast of Nativity of Blessed Virgin,
with vegetarian flavour.....?
