Indeed, I am delighted to to know our friend Mr. James Pius D'Souza is composing so beautifully Konkanni Poems. Yes, I was knowing he is a perfect actor and attempted singing in public, in yester years Barkur and his name always synonymous with stage programmes, being the lead star of ICYM Barkur. On going through the maaibhaas pages today, in its popular Kavita-valho, I realised we being his contemporaries and say, as seniors, failed to encourage the budding poet. I wish Mr James all the very best, and proudly allocate the front seat recognition and honour, with great artists of my natives, like Kishore Gonsalves, Eric Soans, John F. Gonsalves, of high quality and depth. The days are not far away, if he improves further, his poems will be published in a book form and surely be well received by Konkanni fraternity. Once again, best of luck, Pius James and congratulations!

The Election Scene at D.K and Udupi Districts slowly but clearly drawn. At the outset the fight between BJP and Congress, the Janata dal and Kannada Nadu parties may play spoilsport! The hidden agenda of Electorate will be known only next month though elections were held on 26th April. In our own interest We appeal all responsible citizens to cast their vote, keeping in mind - the best of the lot, less harmful, secular, progressive with a clean honest back ground. It is also worthy to vote en-masse to a particular candidate, than supporting someone on caste, religion mindset and most importantly loosing candidate, if you are very sure.

Today being a public holiday and very few engagements, had a round in your archives - the history of famous people of 50 years back at our Barkur gave me a great relief and contentment. All three you covered sofar, are great sons of Barkur. John P.Sequeira, P.N.Boja Rao, Fr. Roche known for their leadership, integrity and dedication for the cause they chosen. The people lived with these legends are no more yet their students, surely there! May they may not have access to Computers or shy away to be in public. Wonderful information MR BARKURONLINE, you have ventured a thankless job but Almighty will bless you immensly. For guys like me who lives in isolation, it is a great relief! Wish your efforts reach to every learned household of Barkur and let it be a revolution in our society to recognize right people, very few like you only dream, imagine and materialise.Great Team Work. In Politics there are no permanents friends or enemies. After lot of jumping, licking, mesmerizing, influencing.... to secure tickets of major parties, the water is slowly settle down and till last date for withdrawals of nominations one have to wait to find who are in the race. In coastal Karnataka, a tough fight with Congress and BOP. In a couple of seats Janata Parivar may get good support. By door, Dupe, Kaput, Mangalore, Moodbiri, Bantwal, Belthangadi, Ullal Congress is having upper hand. Kundapur, Karkal, Puttur, Sullya may prefer BJP. Brahammvar is likely to be keenly fought seat and matured electorate will utilise their franchise decisively. Best of Luck!

Acid test for national parties - Congress - Mr. Promod Madwaraj and BJP - Mr Srinivasa Poojary and Independent candidate Ex-Minister Mr. Hegde on the other side, for prestigious Brahmmavar Assembly Seat. Based on preliminary moods,Mr. Hegde will be the front runner, with a clean image and various developmental works to his credit, in the constituency. It has to be seen, whether BJP capitalised on Vajpayee goodwill or Jaitly tricks to win from here. An outsider Mr. Pramod Madwaraj, (Congress Party) of Malpe, is youthful and energetic but his Mom Mrs Manorma Madwaraj trying her luck on BJP bandwagon may be sending confusing signals...? (the way Bangarappa - BJP and Kumar Bangarappa - Cong. in neighbouring Shimogga / Sorabha.) All these developments and caste composition, minority likes and favors, will be few factors ultimately, influence the final results..!

Congrats to your your team and all those maintaining the website. Great way to network with Barkurians. Regards,

Raul and Mitali D'Souza

Meet Mumbai's (also our own Mangalorean) dancing couple, Raul and Mitali D'Souza, born and raised in Mumbai, who are accomplished dancers in the Indian classical dance arts.   After their marriage, together, they have also united their respective dance styles of Bharata Natyam and Odissi into a unique and innovative form and making their presentation a truly visual, sensual, and spiritual treat to behold, impressing the audiences all over the world, who are also hailed as 'Mumbai's Dancing Duo.'

The Bombay Times of The Times of India recently noted, "It's rather unusual to find a young man from a Christian background drawn to a dance form originally practiced by women, Raul has matured to be the most outstanding male performer today.   For the past few years he has performed the male lead role with Hema Malini in most of her dance ballets."

Raul son of Mr. Arthur D'Souza of Barkur and Ena nee D'Cruz of Mangalore city, has been practicing Bharata Natyam for the last 21 years.  Trained by eminent gurus like Dr. Francis Barboza, and Shri Deepak Muzumdar, Raul has perfected the art of grace and athleticism.  He has performed before the Maharaja of Udaipur, Queen Sophia in Madrid, and even Pope Paul II on several occasions winning immense appreciation.  He has performed in lead roles with Hema Malini's troupe, Bengali ballets, Mysore Dance Festival, etc.  He is the recipient of several awards and titles, such as, Priyadarshini Award, Akhil Bharatiya Yuva, Shringar mani, and many more.  He has toured Vienna, Holland, Switzerland, Belgium, Portugal, Italy, London, Germany, Indonasia, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, Rome (World Marian Congress, 2003) and The United States.

Mitali D'Souza, daughter of Late Mr. Gurudas Kamath and Mrs. Mangala Kamath, originally hailing from proper Mangalore, is an accomplished Odissi dancer, since the past 20 years. Mitali is the senior-most disciple of Smt. Jhelum Paranjpe and also has been trained by Padma Vibhushan Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra.  As a seasoned performer, she has toured extensively in the USA, Europe and Australia.  She has performed the song sequences for the movie Daayara, and for serials Amrapali and Abhacharan.  Mitali also has to her credit a dance sequence for Femina Miss India '97 with Fazal Qureshi, lead performances in Kala Ghoda Festival, the Konark Festival, Rain Drops festival, etc.  She gave a winning performance with the Italian dancer Ileana Citaristi, which impressed Guru Kelucharan, who selected Mitali to perform with him for the Festival of India in Germany in 1992.  Her latest achievement is the role of Rukmini in Robi and Radha, a classic film based on Tagore's masterpiece Bahanusinga Padavalli.

Raul and Mitali have been performing together since February 2003.  They gave their debut performance in the US at the first International Dance Conference in San Antonio, TX, in July 2003, and will be performing again by popular demand, in San Antonio this May 2004.  Efforts are underway to stage performances in Chicago, Dallas, Cleaveland later.  Anyone interested in sponsoring or in helping to arrange a performance for any organization, annual meetings, or fund raising purposes, in your respective city, country, or continent, please contact Mrs. Clara Fernandes at "Clara Fernandes" cfernandes2004@hotmail.com, or preferably by calling 210-979-6770.

Compiled by James Fernandes, April 2004.

You are absolutely right about your wonderful statement James Fernandes; in this era, fruits are more important to human life than roots. When you are hungry, what you do with roots? Fruits will satisfy your hunger and help you to survive for another day. By the way, what is opinion Jessie D'Cruz regarding the answers you got from the panel? Do you agree with them or you have your own opinion?
