There are some lives that quietly shape generations, inspire communities, and leave behind a fragrance that lingers long after they are gone. Sr. Shanthi Sequeira was one such remarkable soul — a born leader, a passionate social worker, and above all, a woman deeply rooted in faith and service.

Born on 28th May 1957 in the picturesque island of Japkali Kudru, Barkur, Shanthi was the proud daughter of Late Victor and Theresa Sequeira, a family well respected in social circles. From her early years, signs of brilliance and leadership were evident. At Maryknoll Higher Primary School, Hosala, and later at Maryknoll Girls High School, Barkur, she stood out not only as an excellent student but also as a favourite among her teachers, passing her SSLC with flying colours.
Her journey of excellence continued through National Junior College, Barkur, and reached a defining phase at Milagres College, Kallianpur. It was here that her leadership qualities truly blossomed. As College Representative and Secretary of the College Union during 1976–77, she displayed maturity, confidence, and an inspiring ability to lead.
The year 1976 marked a turning point not only in her life but in the youth movement of Barkur. With the arrival of Rev. Fr. Henry D’Souza as Assistant Parish Priest of St. Peter’s Church, ( now Bishop of Bellary Diocese) a new vision for youth empowerment emerged.
Recognizing the immense potential among parish youth, he laid the foundation for the Catholic Youth Movement (CYM) in September 1976.
In those formative days, when separate units existed for young men and women, Shanthi Sequeira was unanimously chosen as the President of the Ladies’ Wing of CYM Barkur. Her leadership was not merely positional — it was transformational. She brought energy, unity, and purpose, inspiring young women to step forward with confidence and commitment.
Fifty years have passed since those pioneering days, yet the spirit she ignited continues to burn brightly. It is deeply poignant that during this Golden Jubilee year of CYM Barkur, Sr. Shanthi was called to her eternal home.
A reservoir of talent, Shanthi was a gifted public speaker, a graceful actress, and a melodious singer. Her influence extended beyond her own achievements — she was a guiding force in shaping her family as well. Her younger brothers carried forward her legacy of leadership and service. Lawrence A. Sequeira emerged as a dynamic leader who unified Barkurians in Mumbai and founded the St. Peter’s Catholic Youth Association in 1986, later contributing to the formation of SPA Barkur Mumbai. Herald J. Sequeira, another multifaceted personality, served as President of CYM Barkur with distinction.
After completing her B.Com degree, Shanthi made a profound and courageous decision — to dedicate her life to God. Inspired by the sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Convent, Barkur, she joined the Sisters of Charity, embracing a life of simplicity, sacrifice, and service.
As a committed educator, Sr. Shanthi served as a graduate teacher in several high schools across places like Shimoga and Mangalore. Her mission even extended beyond borders, as she had the opportunity to serve in African countries — touching lives with compassion, knowledge, and faith.
Though her earthly journey spanned just 68 years, it was a life rich in purpose, love, and selfless service. On 14th June 2026, in Casa Gala Convent in Anjelore - Mangalore, she peacefully entered her heavenly abode — leaving behind not emptiness, but a legacy.
Today, as we remember Sr. Shanthi Sequeira, we do not merely mourn her passing — we celebrate her life. A life that inspired leadership, nurtured faith, strengthened communities, and radiated the love of Christ.
The CYM family of Barkur bows in deep gratitude and reverence to this great soul. We extend our heartfelt condolences to her bereaved family and the Sisters of Charity Congregation.
Her life was her message — and her message will live on.
