The Udupi Diocese has successfully completed the historic process of selection and establishment of new Parish Pastoral Councils in all its 52 parishes — a significant milestone in strengthening grassroots Church leadership. This noble initiative was personally spearheaded by our beloved Bishop, Most Rev Dr Gerald Isaac Lobo, who ensured that every council functions in the true spirit of democracy guided by divine wisdom.

In tune with the declaration of 2026 as the “Year of the Poor” by our Holy Father, Bishop Gerald, through his pastoral communication, urged every parish to take special responsibility in ensuring that no family is deprived of basic human necessities such as shelter, clothing, and food. This compassionate call reflects the heart of Christ and the mission of the Church to stand with the needy.

As part of his pastoral outreach, Bishop Gerald began visiting parishes personally to interact with the newly formed councils. Barkur Parish had the privilege of being one of the first parishes to receive his visit. On 7th January 2026 at 5.00 pm, the Bishop arrived to meet his flock amidst prayerful joy and warm fellowship.

He was accorded a cordial and respectful welcome by Parish Priest Rev Fr Ronald Miranda, Vice President PPC Mr Joseph Fernandes, Secretary Mrs Sabitha Picardo, Convenor of the 20 Pastoral Commissions Mr Joseph Fernandes, members of the Finance Committee, and council representatives.

During the hour-long interactive deliberation, all PPC members actively participated with enthusiasm and openness. The session proved to be deeply enriching, offering clarity, motivation, and direction for future pastoral planning. The Bishop’s guidance helped members reflect on their responsibilities and chart out meaningful actions for the welfare and spiritual growth of the parishioners.

The visit left a lasting impact on all present — renewing their commitment to serve, strengthening unity, and igniting a deeper sense of mission. Truly, it was a grace-filled encounter that will inspire Barkur Parish to move forward with renewed zeal, compassion, and pastoral vision.
