Barkur, Udupi District, October 1, 2024- The historic town of Barkur once again proved its mettle as a premier sporting destination with the commencement of the Udupi District level 'Tennis Volleyball & Jump Rope Tournament'. The National Auditorium buzzed with excitement as young athletes from across the district gathered for the grand inaugural ceremony, marking the beginning of what promises to be an exhilarating competition.
A Legacy of Sporting Excellence
Mr. B Seetharama Shetty, the retired principal of National PU College, set the tone for the event with his inspiring inaugural address. "Barkur has remained a favorite destination for Hobali, Taluk, and District Level Games Tournaments over the years," he remarked, addressing the eager teenagers who had traveled from various parts of Udupi to participate in the Tennis Volleyball Games – Singles and Doubles, and various Skip rope events.
The traditional lamp-lighting ceremony, performed by Mr. Shetty along with other dignitaries, heralded the official start of the tournament, symbolizing the light of sportsmanship and fair play that would guide the proceedings.
Opening Ceremony: A Celebration of Youth and Sport
The National Auditorium was filled to capacity, with athletes and team managers gathered to witness the opening spectacle. The ceremony commenced with a solemn prayer hymn performed by students, setting a reverent atmosphere for the events to follow.
Prof. U Kottraswamy, Principal of National PU College, extended a warm welcome to all participants in his address. The Physical Director of NPU, Mr. Umesh Shetty, recognized as the mastermind behind the meticulous arrangements, conducted a floral reception to honor the guests.
Mr. Krishna Hebbar, Treasurer of Barkur Educational Society (BES), conveyed his best wishes to all participants, emphasizing the society's commitment to fostering sporting talent in the region.

The event highlighted the strong community backing for sports in Barkur. The Rotary Club of Barkur, represented by its dynamic President Mr. Ganesh Shetty, was honored for sponsoring the tournament's trophies and shields. Principal Kottraswamy presented a memento to Mr. Shetty, acknowledging the club's significant contribution to the event's success.
A Call for Sportsmanship and Excellence
Mr. B Shantharama Shetty, President of BES, delivered a rousing presidential address. He expressed his delight at the large turnout of sports persons, accompanied by their coaches and trainers. "Barkur, with its rich historical and spiritual heritage, welcomes you all," he said, reminding the audience that the National Grounds have been witness to numerous achievements and records over the past 80 years in various track, field, and game events across Udupi and the former Dakshina Kannada District.
Shetty emphasized the importance of discipline and fair play, urging all participants to "adhere to and abide by the rules and regulations of the game with a sportive spirit, and follow the instructions of the tournament referees and teachers."
The inaugural ceremony was graced by several notable figures, including, Mr. Gopal Naik, Correspondent of the National PUC, Mr. P. Archibald Furtado, Administrative Coordinator of National Group of Educational Institutions, Mrs. Jyothi Shetty, Treasurer of National Old Students Association.

As the ceremony drew to a close, with Mrs. Usha Kiran Shetty, Lecturer in Mathematics, proposing the vote of thanks, there was a palpable sense of anticipation in the air.
