Msgr Henry D'Souza Consecrated Bishop of Bellary - Devotees Rejoice

Bellary, Jun 12: The Episcopal ordination of Msgr Henry D’Souza was held at St Joseph’s Girls High School, here on Thursday June 12. 

The ceremony of praise and worship was enriched by the melodious choir.  The letter from Holy See on nomination of Monsignor Henry D’Souza as Bishop of Bellary was read out by Cardinal Oswald Gracias of Mumbai. 

Bishop Anthonyswamy of Chikmagalur, in his homily said that it was an auspicious day as the Lord has provided a Shepherd, a leader and a disciple to the devotees of Bellary.  He wished all that is best to Bishop Henry D’Souza and exhorted him to work for the betterment of poor and downtrodden.

The people of Bellary jointly presented an appreciation placard to Bishop Henry D’Souza which was read out by Chinnappa. Cardinal Oswald Gracias of Mumbai Archdiocese while blessing the new Shepherd said, "God sends the right person at the right place and at the right time and Bishop Henry is a perfect example of this adage. God has provided the people Bishop Henry D’Souza as their spiritual leader. He is a good organizer, works persistently, likeable and genuine, has the gift to understand the people. I am quite sure that he will truly become the people's Bishop in this diocese."

"The message of the day 'New Heart and New Spirit' means a lot. I sincerely wish that your efforts may usher in new spirit not only among the devotees but also within you, as you have chosen to surrender yourself wholly to God," he concluded. 

Eminent personalities such as union minister Oscar Fernandes, state ministers Janardhan Reddy, Rajshekar Reddy, Sriramulu, Suresh Babu, Bellary mayor Shobha and others were present on the occasion.  They were also felicitated on the occasion. 

Archbishop Bernard Moras of Bangalore archdiocese in his welcome address said “It is a golden moment, memorable day in the life of people of Bellary.”  He added that he confident that people will extend cooperation to Bishop Henry D’Souza.

Bishop Henry D’Souza, speaking on the occasion, said “I did not deserve to be what God chose me to be.”  He expressed his commitment to the people especially to educate the girl students, welfare of farmers, sick and old who are neglected.  He praised women as they are the ones who inspire children.  He thanked the Cardinal for consecrating him as Bishop of Bellary and all those present for the ceremony.    

Around 35 Bishops and 250 priests from all over the country along with almost 10,000 people were present for the Episcopal ordination.  

Students of St Joseph’s High School and Holy Cross Convent, Laxminagar presented eye-catching cultural programmes.

The day came to an end with a fellowship agape.

Barkur is only the parish had the privilege to be served by Rev Henry D'Souza as Asst.Parish Priest soon after his ordination. A large number of Barkur Parishioners including Herald D'Souza, Vice President , Parish Council, Gerald Gonsalves, Former Vice President , Parish Council, Rita Crasta, Eric Soans, Shiney Lewis, Stephen Lewis and Kishore Gonsalves and family attended the consecration ceremony . St. Peter's Association (Barkur) Mumbai was represented by Felix Barnes, Peter Furtado, Norbert Menezes, Ivan Rebello, Henry Roche and Rolph Montheiro.

Parish Day celebrated at Barkur

Parish Day was celebrated at Barkur Church premises recently. The day started with the Holy Eucharist at 3.30 pm followed by light refreshments to all the parishioners.

Evening stage programme was organised at the Parish Hall Souharda was presided over by Rev Fr R C M Aranha, Parish Priest Barkur. Former Vice President of the Parish Council and the President of the Rotary Brahmavar, Gerald Gonsalves was the chief guest. All the Gurkars of the eight wards of Barkur were present on the stage along with Vice President of the Parish Council, Herald D’Souza.

Herald D’Souza welcomed the gathering and all the Gurkars of the wards were felicitated with flowers for their selfless services rendered through out the year. Outstanding President of ICYM Barkur unit which won many accolades recently at the state level youth seminar, Dr.Manoj D’Lima, Choir master Eric Soans were acknowledged for their achievements.

Gerald Gonsalves was felicitated for winning many awards recently for his achievements in Rotary Club Brahmavar.

Irene Pais, secretary of the Parish Council compeered the stage programme. After stage programme all the wards presented variety entertainment programmes.

ICYM Barkur shines at State Level

ICYM Barkur unit lead by its dynamic president Dr.Manoj D’Lima excelled at the State level youth festival at Shirva , organized by the ICYM Udupi District central council. About 15 representatives from the Barkur unit participated in the three days camp and won many accolades and prizes in various categories.

Dr. Manoj D’Lima was selected to represent the diocese at the state level because of his outstanding oratory and leadership skills. The exhibits prepared by the unit for the state level youth exhibition won first place in this category. The team excelled in the entertainment section and was appreciated for their active involvement in the fest.

Obituary

Staney Olivera (69), Bennekudru, Barkur , Husband of Sophia, Father of Glen/Rashmi, Othen/Shaila and Sylvan, passed away on 1st June 2008. Funeral cortege leaves residence at 10 am on 3rd June to Church of St.Peter Barkur for mass and burial. Contact Telephone number 0820 2587922.

Kavitha Trust creates history at Moodahadu

Kavitha  a trust dedicated to the cause of konkanni Poetry organized a Konkani Kavi Ghosthi at the banks of the river Seetha at Moodahadu recently. About 35 konkanni poets from Goa and Mangalore participated in the recital of Konkani Poetry .

Kishoo, Barkur, Secretary Kavitha Trust welcomed the gathering.  Award winning poet and the editor of Kannik fortnightly,  Maurice Shanthipura was at the helm of the Poetry Session.  Jerry Rasqinha from Mangalore presented humorous jokes .

Micheal Gartius the Editor of Jivith at Goa  was present along with 10 companion poets.  About 20 Konakkni poets recited best of their creations.  Kishoo Barkur recited some of the best humorous chutuks of Antony Prakash, Moodahadu  and Eric Soans recited the poem by PJ Karugalanade, both local konkanni poets absent due to their professional commitments.

Melvyn Rodrigues, President, Kavitha Ttrust, Eric Ozario, Gurkaar,  Maand Sobhaan, and Ex President of Karnataka Konkanni Sahithya Academy along with his wife Joyce Ozario, Roy Castelino , President , Konkanni Prachar Samithi were present on the occasion.

Archibald Furtado,  Stephen Lewis expressed their views on behalf of the local kudu residents and said that these type of poetry sessions work out as therapy to  relieve the  day to day work stress and tensions.

Wilfred Roche, Gurkaar of the Kudru ward, Richard D’Souza , Alwayn Andrade, Urban D’Souza and Thomas Picardo  along with their families extended their whole hearted support to the event.

A sumptuous  sea food dinner sponsored by Antony Prakash and Family and served with love by Gurkaar Wilfred Roche and team was enjoyed by the guests from Mangalore and Goa along with Kudru residents who were witnessing first ever event of such kind and were truly overwhelmed by the power poetry of entertaining . Vithori Karkal , Trustee, Kavitha Trust  conducted the proceedings and proposed the vote of thanks.
