"Mythri" , The Parish Hall Inaugurated at Sastan.

Bishop of Mangalore diocese Rt Rev Dr Aloysius Paul D'Souza formally inaugurated the Sanstan Church Parish Hall 'Mythri' on Saturday.  Vinaya Kumar Sorake, MP of Udupi constituency was also present on the occasion.

Speaking on this occasion, Bishop called upon all to forget hatred, greed, gealousy and live together with values of love, harmony and brotherhood.  Our life should be a leading light to others, he said.

On his chief guest's address, Vinaya Kumar Sorake said that Christian educational institutions are the ones who are responsible for the quality education in DK and Udupi districts.

Legislator Jayaprakash Hegde also spoke.  Leaders should work towards facilitating government subsidies and grants to common people, he insisted.  He assured government aid to Sastan Hall from government.

Kundapur Vicar General Fr JB Crasta, Sastan Syrian Church Priest Fr Johnson, Saligram Panchayat President Rafiuddin, Pandeshwar Panchayat President Mrs Susheela Poojari, St Anthony's Church Parish Council Vice-President Robert Furtado were also present.

Fr Vincent Martis, Parish Priest of Sastan was honoured by the Bishop on this occasion.  Robert Furtado welcomed the gathering.  Albert Picardo and Shalet Lewis compered.  William Saldanha proposed vote of thanks.

Adjacent to the National Highway 17, the completed hall is situated in the close vicinity of the Bus-Stops with ample parking space. The ground floor consists of a mini hall with a seating capacity of 500 people. The top floor is a full pledged programme hall of 10,000 square feet with all modern amenities consisting of well designed  stage catering to all kinds of programmes and open to be used by the general public.

SANTHEGUDDE TROPHY 2003

Santhegudde Cricketers Barkur, are coming up with the third consecutive , District Level 30 yards Flood Light Cricket Tournament in remembrance of famous Kannada Film Star Barkur Sunil Shetty , aptly named SANTHEGUDDE TROPHY 2003 on 8th and 9th November 2003 at Simhasana Gudde Ground , Barkur.

The first place winner will receive a cash prize of Rs.5555 along with a permanent shield and the runner up will be richer by Rs. 3333 and a permanent shield.  Best Bowler, Best Batsman, Man of the match and Man of the Series are the other attractions for the players.

Mangalore University Team at National Level

Mangalore University  team secured 4th place in the All India Level Inter University Cross Country Competition held at Kottayam Mahatma Gandhi University. The men’s team managed the 7th place.

Mr. Kurian P. Mathew was the trainer and Mr. Augustine Dias, Barkur, Physical Director , Milagres College; Kallianpur was the manager for the Mangalore University Team.

BEST PHYSICAL DIRECTOR AWARD TO MR. AUGUSTINE DIAS

Mr. Augustine Arun Dias, Founder President of ICYM, Barkur and the Physical Director of Milagres College is selected for the prestigious award amongst the Physical Instructors of Mangalore University. In his dynamic leadership, Milages College has won many awards during the academic year 2003-04 and got many team championships.

He was awarded with "Best Physical Director Award"  in a University level programme  held at Mangala Stadium, Mangalore,  attended by  many dignitaries,  including Mr. Kurunji Venkatramana Gowda of Sullia Educational Institutes,  Mr. Vinay Kumar Sorake, M.P., Minister Mr. Ramanath Rai, Mangalore Mayor Mr. K. Diwakar, Mr. Dharmapal Negi, D.I.G. and Mr. Yogish Bhat, M.L.A.

TAHSILDAR'S  OFFICE INAUGURATED AT BRAHMAVAR

In a welcome development Tahsildar's Office was inaugurated at Brahmavar and Tahsildar- nominate Mrs. Mary Mathias took charge of the Office as the first Tahsildar of Brahmavar.

In a public function presided over by Mr. K. Jayaprakash Hegde, Mr. Vasanth V. Salian, Udupi District Minister inaugurated the Tahsildar Office.  Mr. Vinaya Kumar Sorake, M.P., Mr. Bhujanga Shetty, Zilla Panchayath President, Dr. Vanajakshi, Vice President of Zilla Panchayath, Mrs. Geetha Shambhu Poojary and Mr. B. N Shakar Poojary, Z.P members, Mr. P. Rajaram and Mr. Nithyananda Shetty Taluk Panchayath members along with other dignitaries were present during the occasion.  The Tahsildar of Udupi Mr. Murulidhar was also present.

The taluk office will have all the facilities and will cater the needs of the people of Brahmavar and Kota Hoblis. So the people can get all sorts of certificates, land records and other records from Taluk Office, Brahmavar. With this development, the dream of having Brahmavar Taluk is a step closer to the reality.

Little Rock rocks the IT world again...

Once again they have proved that they are the masters when it comes to IT. Master Ashwin and Master Samarth of Little Rock Indian School Brahamavar emerged as the state champions  by winning the prestigious first place in the Rural IT quiz held at Bangalore as part of the weeklong Information Technology fest IT.Com 2003.

The Girls from Carmel Convent Mandya and students from J.T. College Gadag , bagged second and third place.

Ashwin P., 12th Std., and Samarth V. Kudalkar, 10th Std., represented the Little Rock Indian School in the final rounds , proudly received their trophy from Mr. M. V. Venkatappa, President  Vidhana Sabha.

Total of 52000 students covering 27 districts of  the Karnataka State, participated in the various preliminary rounds of the quiz, conducted in different stages, and 6 teams were selected for the final.

Mr. Giri Bala Subrahmaniyan , popularly known as the 'Peak Brain' conducted the quiz competition, jointly organized by the IT Department of the Karnataka State Government and Tata Consultancy  Services.

It may be recalled here that last year Little Rock Indian School received the 1st Computer literacy award for schools from the President Mr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam , organized by the Ministry of IT., Government Of  India.

A successful workshop on Journalism by The Expressions…

The Expressions, a name synonymous with quality entertainment programs in and around Barkur, added one more feather into its cap by organizing a one day seminar on Journalism for the benefit of general public .

The seminar was inaugurated by Rev. Fr. Sylvester DSouza , Parish Priest. Mr. Richie Lasrado , well known journalist and now a freelance media consultant and Mr. Raviraj Valalambe of ETV , Udupi District were the resource person for the morning session talked on “Common errors in Reporting and Advertising” and “Print Media and Visual Media” respectively.

Afternoon session was taken up by Mr. Nithyanand Padre of Udayavani Kannada daily. Mr. Padre who spoke on “Photo Journalism and Feature writing” kept audience wide awake with his lively anecdotes and jokes who were otherwise were sleepy because of the sumptuous vegetarian buffet arranged by The Expressions.  Mr. Balachandra Shetty, Head Master, Government Primary School , Bennekudru, expressed his views on behalf of the participants.  

Mr. Staney Pais, Founder President of the Rotary Barkur, who was instrumental in leading the Barkur Rotary into spectacular success in the year of its inception and repeated the success story the next year was facilitated by The Expressions for his services to the society in the evening at the valedictory function, which was presided over by Sr. Lenny Crasta of IHM convent Barkur. Mr. Praveen Carvalho, President did the honors with traditional garland, shawl and fruits. Mr.Kishore Gonsalves , Cultural Secretary read out the introductory note on Mr. Pais.

Mrs. Gretta Gonsalves,  Vice President welcomed the guests in the morning and Mrs. Zita Gonsalves proposed the vote of thanks in the evening. Secretary of the group, Mr.Eric Soans, aptly conducted the full day proceedings .

GENERAL BODY MEETING OF CATHOLIC CREDIT CO-OP SOCIETY

The annual general body meeting of the Catholic Credit Society was held at Swarna Bhavan, Brahmavar recently.

During the meeting accounts for the year 2002 -2003 were placed before the gathering of members. The society has earned a net profit of Rs. 4.46 lakhs during the year (Rs. 3.27 lakhs during 2001- 2002) and a dividend of 12 % was declared (10 % during 2001 - 2002).

The total deposits have reached to 2.14 crores and the advances are 1.35 crores. It is trying to get the Co-operative Bank status and collecting extra  share capital in this regard. Mr. Valerian Menezes, President has sought  the support of the members to invest in share capital so that the Society can be converted into Co-operative Bank as early as possible. 

INTER-COLLEGIATE CHESS TOURNAMENT

In the Mangalore University Inter-Collegiate Chess Tournament held at Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara College of Business Management the Men and Women Teams of Milagres College, Kallianpur emerged as Champions for the first time.

With a tally of 15 points Milagres College won Championship. SDM Law  College, Mangalore with 12.5 points got the 2nd place. Mr. Sudeep Shetty from the Men Section and Mallilka  and Shobha from the Women Section brought fame to the College winning the Board Prizes.
