Ganapathi (Vighneshwara), the remover of obstacles.

WE all know that Ganapathi is an important deity of the Hindus, and as is well known, he is represented with a human body and an elephant's head. The Shiva Purana tells the story behind his strange appearance: Once when Shiva's consort, Parvati, needed someone to guard the door while she was bathing, no one being immediately available, she molded a human figure out of a lump of clay, put it outside the door of the bathroom, and breathed life into him. She ordered the live figure not to allow anyone to enter. Soon afterwards her husband Lord Shiva arrived and was refused admission by the doorkeeper. He was furious and in his rage cut off the doorkeeper's head. Parvati was very upset. To make amends to his wife, Shiva cut off the head of Indra's elephant and fixed it on the human body; and so Ganapathi came into being. Ganapathi is the God of wisdom and the remover of obstacles. Consequently his name is invoked before beginning a new venture.

Do you know why Ganapathi travels on mouse?  The mouse symbolizes the darkness of night. The mouse can see well in the dark. As Vinayaka's vehicle the mouse signifies an object that leads man from darkness to light. The Vinayaka-principle, thus, means that which removes all the bad qualities, as well.

I thought, I could share, what I read somewhere:  James Fernandes.
