Local body elections-2005

Local body elections are due to held on 19th December, 20005. The hype is high and many trying their luck in the ballot box. Widely understood by the electorate and predicted by the political analysts as  the prelude to the Karnataka State Assembly elections, though not due, but likely to be held in coming Summer, all major political, parties gearing up for a show of strength, in the event of premature dissolution of the legislature to capture the seat of power in Vidhana Saudha.

Brahmmavar, a constituency elected an independent Mr. Jaya Prakash Hegde for consecutive third time is witnessing multi-cornered contest, in most of the seats.

In general in the State level Indian National Congress - INC, better known as Congress Party, Bharatiya Janata Party – BJP, Janatha Dal Secular are the main players. But Samajavadi Party of Mr. Bangarappa, JDS Break away group led by Mr.Siddharmaiya, Janatha Dal United, Communists in some pockets and few other splinter groups also working overtime to influence the voter, with various gimmicks and offers in their manifestos.

One Assembly seat is having almost Seven Zilla Parishad seats and Six times more seats in a Taluk Panchayat. Normally, local issues and the personal goodwill and record of the candidate will tilt the balance in favor of a particular candidate, the party influence; resources, caste, religion and the strength of the god father… surely have a share in the success or failure of a particular candidate.

Barkur Taluk Punchayat is having four major candidates – Mr. Tulasidas Kanchan supported by Mr. Hegde, Mr. B.M.Krishna, supported by Mr. Shantarama Shetty of BJP. Mr. Kasim Saheb of Janatha Dal Secular and Mr. Satish Poojary of Congress Party.

Barkurline expect the voters and citizens to use their franchise judiciously and request to participate in the election process which is the very foundation of Democracy.

Barkur Boy Harry Fernandes - Now a Bollywood Director

Bollywood is such a place that it is not easy for the common man to reach there. But determination and interest in the field can take one there through hard work, sincerity and, no doubt, a little luck!

Harry Fernandes is one such example who climbed up the ladder of success and today he is the director of a Bollywood movie.

Harry's father William Fernandes landed in Mumbai in search of a job and settled in the commercial capital of India, having secured a job in Simplex Woollen Mills. He was married to Philomena of Sastan. Harry was born in Mumbai, but due to the ill health of Harry's grandmother in Barkur, Philomena had to go back along with Harry to live in Barkur. Harry started schooling in Barkur and studied up to Standard III. Later, after the death of his grandmother, he came back to Mumbai along with his mother. At it was difficult to find a Kannada medium school nearby, he was forced to join a Marathi medium school. Unfortunately, he had to start all over again, from Standard I.

He had already developed keen interest in silver screen right from his childhood. He used to watch at least 4-5 movies per week!

After his 12th Standard of education he joined the Central Railways as an electrical mechanic and served for 14 years. Somehow, after so many years, he still found no job satisfaction. Because of his interest in the film industry.

Current MP and Bollywood star Govinda's uncle was a colleague of Harry's father. That's how he got introduced to Govinda. And Govinda helped him by introducing him to Lawrence D`Souza,  of ‘Sajan’ fame and another well-known director of Mangalorean orign. Harry started his career afresh as an assistant to Lawrence. He got the opportunity to work with him in movies like 'Maher', 'Pratiksha', 'Giraftari', 'Nyay - Anyay' and others.

Promoted as Co-director in marathi Movies:

Well-known Marathi and Hindi comedian Laxmikant Berde's brother Purushottam Berde directed two Marathi movies, 'Shame to Shame' and 'Ek Phool Char Haath' , which gave Harry an opportunity to learn the skills of a director. Harry learnt the ins and outs of the directorial techniques.

Back to Theatre

During the school days Harry had the experience in stage plays. He acted in plays in schools in prominent roles. He came back to the theatre field and acted in a couple of  plays directed by himself.  Especially, his stage play 'Mogambo Khush Hua' was a huge success.

Back to Silver Screen through TV screen

With Esha Deol

In between, Harry met Sanjay Chhel, a famous TV serial director, who has produced 'Dekh Tamasha Dekh' for Sony TV. Harry directed 26 episodes successfully. It was a turning point for Harry when Sanjay Chhel got the opportunity to direct the movie 'Kya Dil ne Kaha'. Here Harry worked as co-director and entered the film world once again. Though the movie was not a big success, a couple of songs were big hits.

Thereafter, Harry met a few other directors. Yajnesh Shetty entrusted the responsibility of co-direction of his movie 'Yahoo' to Harry. Govinda, Juhi, Hrishita Bhat, Isha Koppikar, Chunky Pandey and other made the main cast in this movie. But, due to financial hurdles, the movie has still not hit the screen. While working for 'Yahoo'  Harry got to know Anil Mehta, another famous Bollywood director. Harry narrated the story of his planned movie 'Anjane the Anmol' to Anil Mehta. Anil was so impressed that he immediately decided to give the full responsibility of directing the movie to Harry.

With Sanjay Kapoor , Manisha Koirala and others

By writing the story and dialogues of 'Anjane' now Harry has turned into a a full-fledged director of Hindi movies. "I am grateful to Anil Mehta who is responsible for this break. Anil has given me full responsibility, without interfering in my work."

With Manisha Koirala

Monisha Koirala is playing the main role in this movie. When asked how he convinced a star like Monisha to act in his movie, Harry says, "I knew her secretary Johny and when I met her to explain, it took me 45 minutes to narrate the story and her role. After listening to it carefully, she agreed to perform in a prime role 'Sanjay Kapoor is lead player in this movie."I work hard on the sets, and work for long hours. If you put in your efforts sincerely, you have every possibility of attaining success here. Since I have a background of the theare, I give prominence the artistes' talent and provide maximum exposure. I learnt a lot from Sanjay Chel and Lawrence D`Souza. But my favourite director is Rakesh Roshan, actor Shah Rukh Khan and actress Aishwarya Rai"

With Superstar Hrithik Roshan

" I have a dream to direct a movie with Shah Rukh Khan and Aishwarya in the lead roles," says Harry

Barkur Boy's Love towards Barkur:

One should appreciate Harry's emotional attachment towards Barkur, where his ancestors hailed from and also grew up for some years. He loves nature. He has dream of shooting a movie around Barkur and capture the lovely scenes of nature around the place “Though it is not possible to shoot a full movie in Barkur, I have plans to shoot the best possible portion of the movie in Barkur,' says Harry.

Harry is married to Merlyn from Mangalore and has two sons -  seven-year-old Aren and  2-year-old Allen. The little family stays in Mumbai.
