Latest
on the Excavation at Barkur Fort Area
File Foto
The Excavation work started about 3 years back with
much fanfare in the
Fort Area of Barkur. The job taken up by the Indian
Archeological Department was going on from the last 3 years.
Fourth stage of the project, which was supposed to start in the
month of January, is now believed to be postponed due to the
negligence of Department, which failed to obtain the required
permission from the government.
M.H. Krishna Indology Institute of the Mythic Society
of Bangalore started the this mega task of Excavation which was
expected to throw light on the rich History of Barkur which was
believed to be the capital city of Tulunadu with the cooperation
from the Indian Archeological Department and the Govinda Pai
Research Center , Udupi. Though a lot of artifacts and other
things were excavated in the last 3 years, nothing seems to do any
good for the development of Barkur.
In the first stage they unearthed the proofs of the
King's Palace and in the second year they found the Horse stable.
In the third stage last year Kings Auditorium which was used for
dance presentations was unearthed.
The excavation was expected to proceed for another 2
stages and it was believed that the government was planning to
convert the place into beautiful tourist center if more evidence
was found in the last 2 stages. But this year excavation job is
not started yet due to some technical reasons. According to some
sources the department was busy with some seminar in the month of
January, failed to obtain the permission from the government. It
is expected to start the job once again in the month of November
once the monsoon season is over.
What is important at this stage is the out come of
these excavations. It will not do any good to Barkur if the
evidence and the artifacts, which were unearthed, are buried once
again in the records and archives of the department. The
Archeological Department should join hands with the Tourism
Department to develop the Fort and other historical places of
Barkur and make this place into a center of tourism. Then only
this mega task of excavation will be justified.

Brahmavar, Vittal, Ullal, Moodbidri Assembly Constituencies Likely
to Vanish
The draft prepared by Justice Kuldeep Singh-led commission for
delimitation of Parliamentary and Assembly constituencies is ready
waiting for the final approval.
Informed sources here said that the final touches to the draft
will be given on a meeting to be held on May 11. The draft has
been prepared on the basis of the census of 2001.
As per the draft a total of 4 assembly constituencies will
disappear from Dakshina Kannada and Udupi district. But two more
new constituencies will be carved out. Accordingly, the undivided
district of Dakshina Kannada will have a total of 13 MLAs instead
of the existing number of 15.
At present there are 6 assembly constituencies in Udupi district.
But as per the delimitation draft, one assembly constituency, that
is, Brahmavar constituency will disappear and only five
constituencies, that is, Udupi, Karkala, Kaup, Kundapur and
Byndoor will remain. Segments of Brahmavar constituency will
merge with Udupi, Karkala and Kundapur constituencies.
All these steps have been taken to limit the constituencies with
minimum population of 2.25 lac to maximum of 2.70 lac.
In the same manner in the district of Dakshina Kannada Ullal,
Mulki-Moodbidri and Vittal constituencies will disappear. While
Ullal will merged the existing Mangalore town constituency,
Mulki-Moodbidri will become part of new Mangalore North
constituency. Parts of Vittal constituency will merge with Puttur,
Bantwal and Mangalore South constituencies.
If the draft is accepted as it is, then present Vittal MLA
Padmanabh Kottari, Ullal MLA U T Fareed, Mulki-Moodbidri MLA
Abhaychandra Jain and Brahmavar MLA K Jayaprakash Hegde will have
for new territories.
However, the draft is yet to be given final touch. Having known
the politicians well one should not be surprised if the draft will
once again be changed, said sources.

ALLINA RELIGIOUS
GIFT CENTER IN SASTAN
A
few years ago to meet the needs of the local community in Sastan,
the decision was made to open a religious gift shop. It is
called the “Allina Gift Center,” because it is located in the
same building complex as the Allina Lab.
The purpose in establishing this center was to provide gift items
for people of all religious faiths. They sell a variety of gift
items at very reasonable prices. The main inventory consists of
religious gift items such as: statues, holy pictures and
portraits, rosaries, and greeting cards for all occasions.
Many customers come to the shop on special feasts such as:
Deepawali, Ganesh Chathurthi, Ramadaan, Christmas, Easter etc to
purchase gifts or greeting cards to send to their loved ones.
Laila D’Almieda is employed in the
Allina Gift Center
and she provides wonderful customer service to all. Laila is from
Petri and is willing to come to Sastan 6 days a week to attend to
the customers who come to the shop. She and her family belong to
St. Peter the Apostle Church in Petri. Laila is very active in the
parish choir and also in the youth group. When Laila is off on
Sunday or any other day, Ronald Andrade or Pushpa Latha, who are
in the Allina Lab., take care of the customers.
In the picture above you see Laila with her family who visited the
Allina Gift
Center to do some shopping on the occasion of their son’s upcoming
birthday celebration.
I hope this information about the
Allina Gift Center
will be helpful to the people of Barkur and Sastan, whether you
are overseas or elsewhere. When you return home and are planning a
celebration for your family or friends think of visiting the
Allina Gift Center. You may find just the perfect gift or greeting
card that will help make it a very special and memorable event.

Distribution
of Village to College Scholarships
The distribution of the Scholarships to the
needy students from the Village to College Scholarship Program was
held recently in the “Dr. Gabriel Fernandes Auditorium” at Smt.
Rukmini Shedthi Memorial College, Barkur. As pointed out by
Principal Rajshekhar Hebbar, Rs. 64,000/- were distributed this
year, the money well spent indeed.
In recognizing the impact of the program, it was
through Hebbar, Fr. Remegius Aranha, the Parish Priest of Barkur
Parish, made himself available to handover the checks to the
students, in Dr. Gabriel’s absence. Principal Hebbar and Retired
Principal Seetharam Shetty coordinated the program, by spending
plenty of their personal time.
The Village to College Foundation is a dream
project of Dr. Gabriel Fernandes hailing from Moodahadu Village
Barkur, now a prominent scientist at USA. Every year deserving
students are screened and provided financial support to complete
the college education.
We request our visitors to feel free to spread the word, and to
recommend any deserving student, who is deprived of college
education for lack of financial support.
