The annual parish feast of St. Peter’s Church is being celebrated
on 19th and 20th of December this year. As
the tradition goes every year the feast is celebrated by some
family in Barkur to thank the Lord for the favors received . This
year Mrs. Theresa (Lobo) D’Souza, Wife of Late Benedict D’Souza of
Kacchur and her children are the traditional Pirjenths of
the festivities.
Vespers are on 19th December at
6.45 pm
and the annual feast day high mass is at
10 am
on 20th December. Most Rev. Dr. Ignatius Paul Pinto,
Archbishop Emeritus, Archdiocese of
Bangalore will be chief celebrant.
The D’Souza Family humbly request you all to attend these
celebrations at the church and also for the fellowship meal at
their residence on both these days. They say that their joy will
be enhanced by your presence. They also added that friends and
relatives those who have not received the invitations by now
should treat this as the family's personal invitation.

Festive season at Barkur.
Looks like Barkur is returning to its vibrant self once again. The
long dismal look that was cast on the town seems to have lifted.
The inauguration of the new bridge has shifted the life into
the higher gears. And the festive season this year seems to be
more colorful and meaningful and Barkur is bustling with
activities.
Today two festivities coincided with each other and gave a perfect
example of the communal harmony that prevails at Barkur which is
rare commodity elsewhere
now a days.
Bennekudru
Kulasthree Shri Masthi Amma Temple and devotees celebrated their
annual festivities and Parishioners of St. Peter’s Church took out
their Eucharistic Procession in preparation for the annual Parish
Feast to be held on 19th and 20th of
December.
The road leading to Bennekudru temple from Kalchapra is
beautifully decorated with large number of banners that displayed
the Shlokas from the Bhavadgeetha. Thousands of devotees of
Bennekudru temple were seen visiting the place from all over Udupi
and Dakshina Kannada district and that lead to a first ever
traffic jam that Barkur witnessed! The vehicles on the road from
Saraf Bidi Kadu to Bennekudru temple came to a standstill for
about 3 hrs in the
noon
and were relieved only after the involvement of the local police.
The roads around the church were decorated by the each wards from
the parish and the Eucharistic Procession took off at 5.15 pm.
Rev. Fr.Valerian D’Souza, Director of the St.Joseph’s Engineering
College concelebrated the high mass with Rev. Fr. Remigeous Aranha
and along with two other priests from the Pilar Fathers of
Kallianpur.
The route of the procession and road to the temple were crossed
from Chanda’s Soda Shop to
Maryknoll High School and both Hindu and Christian banners
displayed co existed peacefully all through this stretch of the
street.

The New Bridge at Barkur Officially Inaugurated.
Barkur, a historical little town which had almost been
disconnected from other parts for over 2 years is now geared up
once again and connected to the rest of the world!
The renovated bridge was thrown open for public use on Sunday
November 26. A bright smile could be seen on the faces of people
after a gap of two years ever since the bridge had been declared
unfit for use. People had either rely on ferry boats or buses
that plied via Kavadi-Saligrama to Barkur for all this long.
The new bridge declared open by the Fuel and Public Works
Department Minister H.D. Revanna. District Care Taker Minister
V.S. Acharya cut the ribbon.
Speaking on the occasion, Misnister H D Revanna said that the all
the bridges on National Highways No.17, 48 and 13 are in bad
condition and its planned to rebuild all these bridges. Engineers
are already instructed to prepare the estimation for the project.
He also added that the stare government has planned to reconstruct
the roads of Shiradi Ghat at a cost of Rs.100 crores. Brahmavar
MLA Jayaprakash Hegde presided over the function that followed the
inauguration at the premises of the new Petrol Station.
Minister V S Acharya stressed on the need to build a direct
highway between Dharmasthala, Kollur and between
Bajpe Airport and Manipal.
Kundapur MLA Haladi Shrinivasa Shetty, Jilla Panchayath President
Shankar Poojari, Jilla Panchayath member Sathish Poojari, Barkur
Panchayath President B . Shantharam Shetty and others were present
at the occasion.
The bridge contractor Ismail and construction in charge Rahim and
Joseph were felicitated. PWD Mangalore Zone Manager Nataraj
welcomed and Udupi Zone Manager Suresh Shetty proposed the vote of
thanks. Govindaraj Hegde and Ashok Kumar conducted the
proceedings.
