Children's Literary Convention
Once again it’s the Children’s Literary
Convention at Barkur, to be held for the 8th
consecutive year this time on Sunday, 13th January at
Mathrashri Rathnamma Heggade Sahithya Vedike at National Pre
University College, Barkur. Swami Vivekananda Samskrithika Kendra,
Barkur in association with
www.barkuronline.com, Shanthivana Trust,
Shrikshethra Dharmasthala, Shri Ramaksrihna Ashrama, Belagavi and
Mangalore is organizing this most awaited and popular event of
Barkur.
Kumari Ashwini S. Udupa, 10th standard student from
Shri Vidyesha Vidyamanya National Englsh Medium High School,
Heradi, Barkur is selected as the President of the convention.
Famous columnist and thinker Shri Chakravarthi Soolibele will
inaugurate the function while S.Vasantha Shetty, Divisional
Education Officer will release the book of a collection of poems.
Dr.Mohammed Rafeek of Shri Dharmasthala Manjunathershwara Yoga and
Prakrithi Chikithsalaya, Parkala and Nadoor Bhijaraj Shetty are
the chief gusets.
Dr.Udayakumar Shetty , K.A.S., Tahasildar , Udupi Taluk will
deliver the valedictory address in the evening. Dr.Manoj D’Lima,
President ICYM, Barkur will distribute the Certificates of
participation.
Two literary sessions on “Samskrithi and Jeevana Moulyagalu” and
“Nenapige Chikithse” and session of Poetry recital are planned for
the day. Dr.Pradeep Atikukke and Shri Gopadkar are the resource
persons for these sessions and Kumari Divya Adiga, 9th
Standard student from Viveka Girls High School, Kota will preside
over the poetry session.
National Award winner Shrinivasa Shettigaar of Shettigaar
Industries, Ranganakere, Barkur and State Drama Academy award
winner, G.Seetharama Shetty, Head Master, B.M.M. High School,
Kooradi will be felicitated in the convention.
Children from many high schools who won the state award and
selected for the National level in Yoga and Throw ball will be
recognized and felicitated .
Over 300 students from nine high schools in the surroundings are
expected to take part in the convention.

Edwin Fernandes (74) son of Peter and Benedicta Fernandes
of Barkur, husband of Theresa Fernandes, father of Edgar, Edson
(Gretchen) and Exter. Brtoher of Winnie (Marcel Vaz), late Maxim /
Ivy, Stella / Regie Pinto, Gladys, Denis / Marie, Wilfred /
Prescilla, Lancy / Diana passed away after a brief illness on
Sunday 6, Jan 2007 in Manipal Hospital. Funeral announcement to

The Expressions Wilson Olivera
Silver Jubilee Nite
After a scintillating success of
Tuvvi Tuvvi a unique children's show on November 4th at
Barkur, The Expressions group is all set to rock Brahmavar
with popular Konkani singer Wilson Olivera. The Expressions
Wilson Olivera Silver Jubilee Nite to be held at Makkala
Mantapa at SMS PU College, Brahmavar on Wednesday, January 2, at
6.30 pm will be a feast for Konkani music buffs.
The
Expressions,
an association formed to support and promote the talents of the
members and the others is organizing this mega show, jointly with
St Mary’s Orthodox Syrian Youth Association.
The Musical Nite has been organized
to mark the occasion of the parish feast of St.Mary's Othodox
Syrian Cathedral, Brahmavar.
Wilson, Zeena and
Adolph
Wilson Olivera will be
accompanied by Zeena, Adolph Jayathilak, Roney Crasta, Prashanth
Pinto and other singers. Alwyn Fernandes and group will provide

ceremonies, young and energetic Ronald Olivera of Toast
Master’s International will be the master of ceremonies of the
glittering evening.

The Expressions, formed in the year
2000, by Kishoo Barkur, Eric Soans and Praveen Carvalho with other
like minded people has presented various successful and unique
programmes like Expressions 2000, Sambhram, Expressions 2005,
Tuvvi Tuvvi, which are very much appreciated by the public and
are the trendsetters for all the cultural programmes around the
area.
They were the event organizers for
the much talked about show in the surroundings "The Karaval
Milan Wilfy Nite" on 1st January 2007.
Presently lead by President Denis
Rodrigues, Sasthan and Eric Soans, Secretary and Kishoo Barkur as
the convener, The Expressions is organising Wilson Olivera Silver
Jubilee Nite to promote local talent, Wilson Olivera, a singer who
hails from Kundapur.
Wilson Olivera is the only Konkani
artist in this part to present musical nites and produced CDs and
cassettes who has so far given 24 successful Konkani musical nites.

Record
Barkur boy Dalvin
Dias created a new record in inter college 400 meters hurdles
race in the Mangalore University level.
Dalvin, son of Mary
and Donath Dias of Bennekudru studying at Alva’s College
Moodabidri broke the 15 year old record in the men’s category. He
logged the a new record of 54.8 seconds which superseded the old
record of 56.1 seconds held in the name of Gopa Kumar of
St.Alloysius College since 1991-92.

Parish Feast and ICYM Anniversary
Parish Feast 2007
and ICYM anniversary were celebrated at St.Peter's church on 19th
December.
The church was
decorated and illuminated beautifully and a large number of people
took part in the festivities on 18th evening, on the Vespers
day.
The number of people
was less comparatively on the Parish Feast day. Monsgr. Rev. Denis
Moras, Vicar General of Mangalore was the main celebrant of the
high mass along with many priests from the ward as the co
celebrants. Roque and Eugine Quadros of Hanehalli were the
Pirjenths of this year.
At the end of the
mass, the office bearers of St.Peter's Association (Barkur)
Mumbai, President Richard Carvalho along with Boney Sequeira,
Rolph Montheiro and Jolvin Furtado were officially crowned
as the Pirjenths for the next year by
Rev.Fr. RCM Aranha.
Wonderful and
melodious choir conducted by Barkur's pride Eric Soans with his
own composed hymns for vespers and feast were the highlight of the
celebrations.
ICYM Barkur unit
celebrated its 30th Anniversary on the evening of the Parish Feast
Day. Richard Carvalho, President, St.Peter's Association (Barkur)
Mumbai presided over the function. Eugine Qaudros and Micheal
Furtado, Sasthan , President, ICYM Centarl Councilm Udupi were the
chief guests.
Prizes were
distributed to the winners of various competitions. Eugine Qaudros
and Micheal Furtado did the honors. ICYM sponsors were
felicitated.
Herald D' Souza and
Noreen Lobo animators of ICYM , and Dr. Manoj D'Lima, President
ICYM were present of the stage.
A cultural fiesta of
dance, songs and jokes by the children and youth of various wards
of Barkur aptly named Masala Mix was presented at the end was
enjoyed and appreciated by all.

Festivities at Barkur

Drive and the Queen's Necklace at Bennekudru
Once again its
festive season at Barkur. The annual feast celebration at Shri
Kula Mahasthri Temple Bennekudru started on 16th
December and will go on for another five days and at the same
time preparations for the annual Parish Feast of Church of
St.Peter are on full swing. On 16th December , on the second day
of festivities at Bennekudru about 10000 people from all over
attended the pooja and showed their devotion to the Matha. More
people are expected in next 3 days.
On Sunday the 16th
December, once again people of Barkur displayed an praiseworthy
example of communal harmony. It was a day of processions at
Barkur. The “Hore Kannike” procession of Shri Kula Mahasthri
Temple and Eucharistic Procession of St.Peter’s Church were
scheduled and route and timings were almost coinciding. But the
people from both the communities peacefully conducted their grand
processions one after the other , displayed their banners on the
roads together and even displayed banners wishing the other
community’s celebrations.
On 17th
December , Mogaveera Yuvaka Sangha celebrated its 24th
annual day at Bennekudru and on 19th ICYM is prepared
for its 30th annual day celebration. Both these
associations which were almost of the same age are doing excellent
service to the people of Barkur and its surroundings. At times
they conduct programmes jointly with each other.
18th
December is the Vespers Day at the church of St.Peter and the
service is scheduled for 0700 pm in the evening followed by Parish
Feast on 19th. Roque, Eugine Quadros and their sons
Russel and Rayan Qaudros are the traditional Pirjenths for the
feast this year.

Sangha annual day celebration
The 24th
Annual Day of the Mogaveera Yuvaka Sangha Bennekudru was
celebrated at the premises of Shri Kula Mahsthri Temple ,
Bennekudru on 17th December.

The programme
started with a prayer song and the welcome by the President of the
association, Sathish Amin. The annual report was presented by the
secretary followed by the Prize Distribution for the winners of
various sports and cultural competitions conducted for the
students of various schools in the surroundings and to the general
public. Babu Kundar Airody, (Abu Dhabi) the donor of the prizes
distributed the prizes to the winners.
Shrinivasa
Shettigaar, proprietor of Shettigaar Industries and former
President of Rotary Barkur who won the National recognition and
award for his services was felicitated at this occasion. Ananda C.
Kundar along with all the dignitaries and members of the
association did the honors.
The stage programme
concluded with vote of thanks followed by various cultural
programmes which were enjoyed and appreciated by a jam packed
crowd.
