Well, it’s a long and elaborate debate we had in our site regarding
Pedruchi Chavi with a lot of participation from many of our visitors.
We approached the Pedruchi Chavi committee lead by Parish Priest with
the printouts of the Sandesh column for their response.  Here are
          results of our discussion.

First of all it is the unanimous decision of the Parish Council to
reduce the number of issues to two per year,  after announcing the
matter in the Church and without any objection,  as in spite of the
repeated appeals to the Parishioners to contribute articles in
Konaknni, Kannada or English, the response has been poor. There is
nothing much to write about the activities of the various
organizations and wards once in three months. So the general question
asked by the people is “What is there to read in PC?”

The issues are reduced not due to lack of funds. Every time when
appealed, Barkurians from the parish and abroad to sponsor, they have
          done it willingly.

Some one observed that there is no dearth of talents in Barkur. Yes,
they agree, but when it came to contributing the articles for PC, the
response has been very poor.  The talented and budding writers still
have a lot of scope as they will be publishing two issues per year and
they can contribute their articles, poems, jokes, etc so the committee
will be able to bring out better and more enjoyable Pedruchi Chavi.

So with this note from the Editorial board, we end this debate on
Pedruchi Chavi. No more feedbacks will be published in the site on
this subject. However we encourage our visitors to send their feelings
directly to the Parish Priest or the Editor of Pedruchi Chavi, as
          requested by them.

          We
do need more PC's, but once I read, James Fernandes and Barkurgar,
feel it must a "YEAR BOOK BARKUR PARISH", with more reading material,
history of Barkur, forgotten personalities, living legends, about
priests who served and serving, in a way it must me a 'monumental
Ducument' to be preseved for future generation, as the mentioned
'Souvenir of ICYM' Fr. Tony's experiment in his Church can be tried by
us or even he can guide us!

          It
appears that we need more than two PC issues published per year. The
observations put  forward by GS Lewis, P.Richard, MM Alvaris,
A.Furtado, and V.DSouza are highly in favour, with suggestions to
raise finance as well. I got a call saying that may be we could charge
a fee, like membership fee to the mailing list recipients. Needless to
say, the 'Benefits do outweigh the costs. Well, "Fondness grows in
absence!" Wait a while, the very local Barkurains will ask for it
pretty soon! Children's Corner could help encourage children to write,
not only local ones, but also the
          NRI
          children. But then the
          NRI
kids can't read Kannada script. Even now, these kids can't appreciate
what their parents write or read in PC. Vincent made a very good
observation, that is, people normally contribute but expect something
in return. We pay a 'nickel' but we want a dollar song! We all want to
hear, births, deaths, weddings, First communions, who graduated, who
are the teachers, who are the achievers, and whose cow is yielding
more milk! Don't we? (I do)! I came across a Commemoration issue of

          St.
Thomas Church, Minneapolis, of its 50 years of Parish life. The
directory contains colored family photographs of each parish
member-family, followed by home address, phone number, etc, The Church
History, message from the Pastor, (our own)Fr. Tony Andrade, Church
staff, pictures and activities and achievements of various Church
activities, ministries, like lectors, choirs, servers, too many to
mention here. A beautifully done job. When such souvenirs are issued,
and when every parish member is included in the booklet, I personally
believe, a 'unity' sort of feeling or 'Commonality'is enkindled. When
such closeness is achieved, any venture is easy to accomplish,
because, the 'Common Cause' outweighs. We would have loved to see the
150 years celebration of St Peter's Church in Barkur, a souvenir, or
something to remember the event. May be this could have been a
challenge, to the Crorepathies, and Lakhpathies of Barkur, local or
NRBs, but then, the opportunity is lost! Can this be salvaged? I
guess, it's not too late. Well, "Roma locuta est, Causa Finita est". I
guess, 150 years celebration is history, and discussing on this site
for more PC issues, is like, crying over 'spilled milk'! Talk is just
          a talk! Thanks folks!

          For
long common Barkurians like me kept silent. Here and there this site
raise some issues, inform and update on happenings in Barkur. A good
job you people doing. Only few are contributing by way of articles
like Fr.Tony, Archie, James, Alvares, Vincent. I feel more
participation will only help to keep the site vibrant.

Pedruchi Chavi is the latest point on discussion - I feel, publish it
yearly, be frank, its value is less compared to cost. Instead the way
you brought out ICYM silver souvenir, plan a proper YEAR BOOK BARKUR.
To be honest I liked that magazine better than any number of chavis,
since it contained some, though few, sensible and matured articles.
          Of
course at times chavi publish one or two good essays on people and
          events, I can’t deny it.

Please don’t waste time on searching sponsors, instead at 1-2 issues
cost of Rs. 50k  you can bring out some worthy book on BARKUR. Since I
don’t have Fr. Aranha’s , Archie’s or James’  email address, pass on
this message to them and if satisfied you are free to put it in
          Barkur.com.

Headmaster MR DIAS is fairly longer time in Hall of Famers. Why don't
you write on my great grand father Mr. D'Silva who happend to be the
FIRST Panchayat President. If Fr. Tony can write on Drivers / Helpers
surely my grandpa, deserve to be there in Barkur Hall of Famers. Even
Pedruchi Chavi is biased not to remember some great souls of past!

Three favorite subjects in this site - ICYM, PEDRUCHI CHAVI
          AND
BARKUR BRIDGE in these days! With no dislike for these matters, why we
pick other matters over here. Mr. Fernandes thoughts are worth to see
the chavi come out more frequently. I yet to get my copy so no
comments on Archie’s observations. Do raise issues of public concern
          too..............

          PC
          - is an emotive subject and the proof is the quick publication of two
/ three articles. The former by Mr. Fernandes and the latter by Mr.
Furtado, speaks in same tone, as both like the book be published more
than twice. Your possessive-ness is the strength to influence the
people concerned to have a second thought on the decision? Always
there are better fields to invest, when one count money spent on
publicity, a waste. But do you think people contribute the money if
you ask other than sponsoring one Issue of your Magazine. Surely not!
See each one expects a sort of recognition or wish to be live being in
the minds of people. Here it is having enormous 'Communication Link
Value' attached, to PC, I believe, than the Economics of Costing!

          I
feel barkur.com too subscribe our sentiments vis a vis Pedruchi Chavi
          is concerned! The supreme power lies in the hands of Parish Council;
let us expect Vicar will have a re-look into the matter!! No doubt,
the issue is more related to outside living Barkurian's rather all at
Barkur for whom it is a routine affair!!! Mr. James Fernandes really
spelled out his positive feelings and suggestions, but Archie’s Corner
restricted to focus on the present issue alone and left us in the
middle of the river without any firm commitment or solutions!!!!

There is an appeal from the Editor and Members of Pedruchi Chavi in
this site. I was  hoping, as mentioned therein, there was plenty of
support, "as there is no dearth of  help...': Where is it? Even
though, I did not get the latest copy yet, I am told that there will
be only two issues published per year. And I read in this site, that
some are disappointed to miss the booklets! The decision must have
been made upon due consideration to 'pros and cons.' While I was
soliciting support to sponsor last Christmas issue from Barkurians in
USA, at least two persons discussed with me saying that the monies
spent in bringing out these issues could have been used for other
needs of the poor, church, hall, school, etc. etc, since, the booklet
goes to the shelf within an hour. (The contents can be read in an hour
so, I am told!) The total cost of publishing these books for the last
2-3 years, when added, must have gone very high! Do the benefit
outweigh the costs? I understand the Non-Resident Barkurians (NRB)
enjoy these books quite happily. Most of them received them free of
cost, thus we get used to the gift, and we expect it all the time, as
though, it’s our birth-right to get! I was feeling guilty to see the
cost of the stamps alone. Rs. 25 is lot of money, and adds up
depending upon the size of the mailing list, all over the world! How
many NRBs have contributed to this  Pedruchi Chavi, financially? We
reciprocate greeting cards, but what did most of us reciprocate to
this booklet? If NRBs enjoy these books, then, the NRBs have a
responsibility to shoulder the expenses at least, if not by voluntary
time, or articles, or labour. Just a thought: Can NRBs in

Bombay sponsor one issue per year?
          And
          Similarly, Middle East,

North America, or Bangalore? If four VOLUNTARY sponsors are found, may
be four issues might fly. But, who will want to commit? Or who wants
to involve? I can ask the Five NRBs in USA who contributed financially
for the last Christmas issue, whether they can sponsor annually in the
future. I can do this much, under the circumstances! To get breast
fed, the babies have to cry!
          James Fernandes,

          It
was an elaborate report on Daiji Dubai, about CYM BARKUR, mostly last
week or so, and local weekly Raknno too. Great work, laudable
achievement. Mr. fernandes, now you get twice mail from Barkur via
          Chavi!

          I
was wondering, how Barkurian's bring out 4 issues of parish bulletin,
every year and spoken to my friends why we too plan accordingly. Lucky
people to have Eric Soans, Kishoo barkur and others... to shoulder the
responsibility. Money matters most..., but you are focusing a distinct
community..... at a time, is well received by Barkurian's. I find no
reason to make it 2 times, if outside living Barkur, wish to have it
more regularly. By the way, I just come to know ICYM of Barkur is
elder to Kallianpur. Of course all such activities in our parish were
conducted well by our Famous YOUTH CENTRE. Still, we too are happy to
find your name at the top, congratulations!

          GS Lewis,
          Kallianpur.12/05/2005
          Can
someone reveal the achievement of Barkur ICYM, the subject of praise
in this site? I did not get Pedruchi Chavi, nor I read on Barkur.com.

          James
          Fernandes,

          11/07/2005
          I am
totally disappointed by the message of Vicar stating that the Pedruchi
Chaavi will be published only two times in a year. Plesae note, the
booklet is having value not among the Barkurians in Barkur but
Barkurians outside Barkur, to be in touch and know their people and
          parish regularly.

          Philiph Richard,

Congratulations to ICYM Barkur on your great achievement. Indeed I'm
Very proud of you! With love and best wishes

          We
the President, Office bearers, and the Members of ICYM Barkur Ex
–Members Association, congratulate the whole ICYM Team of Barkur, its
President and Members including the Directors, Animators, and of
course the Parish people of St. Peter’s Church Barkur, on being the
Unit chosen and felicitated as one of the ‘Best ICYM Group’ of the
          Mangalore Diocese.
          You
deserve to be honored more so, as your unit always found a place among
top ten, out of some 150 ICYM Units spread over the Districts of D.K,
Udupi and Kasargod, since the very inception of the much acclaimed
ICYM Cup some 10 years back.
          It
is also a point of pride, since this is the only unit, in the Northern
part of the Diocese and eldest in the Kallianpur Varado, to be in the
          limelight consistently.
          To
recall our memories, over the last few years, the past Presidents
like, Rohan D’Souza, Divya Furtado, Alwyn D’Almeida, Sabitha
Mascarenhus and the incumbent Rohan D’Souza and their teammates led
the Association to the height of success. We the ex. Members firmly
trust in the value of life not depending on the present position you
occupy but the way you occupied that position – in short, your
positive response to the need of the hour, in ever changing
circumstances at Barkur and the surroundings.
          Let
this recognition of your manifold activities and services boost your
energies further to serve the society and parish and at the same time
bring to light best in you, to be mould as ideal citizen’s of
          tomorrow’s Barkur. Keep it up!
          On
behalf of ICYM Barker Ex-Member’s Association,
