We deeply regret the unfortunate Train accident this morning, in which 25 dead and more than 100 injured. May the departed soul rest in peace and injured get well soon.

Vincent D' Souza, 17/06/2004

Kudos the D K Mogaveera Mahajana Seva Sangha for taking a giant step towards rebuilding Our historic temple, if this step goes towards rebuilding UNITY amongst our community members & forging trust between the MOGAVEERAS settled in Mumbai also then certainly the days are not far away in the Mogaveera community leading the path of self reliance in Karnataka as well as Mumbai.

Thanking you.

This is an excellent site for all the Barkurians who are very far away from their home land. Best wishes to all the team members for giving us this wonderful site to find out what is happening in and around our home town. Keep it up.

Masala updates are very good, thanks. Also it was a good article about Barkurian's in Oman - Muscat. You missed the tasty Dates of Oman coming to India for centuries, sold at 'Vodhlen Fest' and this is the nearest destination to India with Gulf nations. Al-together it is worthy information, we surely look for other Barkurian Communities in other Gulf and European Countries to be introduced. Few photographs will add more attraction..

Most of us have a natural urge to express our feelings through rhythmic movements by way of dance, this is both an art and a form of popular recreation. We are happy to hear that in distant Chicago, Fernandes Sisters, whose origins are from Barkur, mastering this expressive movements of body in a systematic way, to earn a name for themselves and fame for Barkurians. Wish you all a bright and successful future, to bring more laurels to your family, friends and hope you will perform in India / Barkur too!

P.Archibald Furtado, Muscat, 06/06/2004

I was watching the on-going 'massages exchange' in this site on 150th Jubilee of our Famous Church. Except a few, many seems to keep the celebrations a low key affair. It mainly depends on the Parish clergy's support and Parish Council's initiatives, at the moment both are missing, to organise, mobilise and involve - all parishioners far and near! The issue of a Shrine at Dharmasale or Heardi is the best monument, rather it is need of the future. To record and inform the coming generation the history of our forefather's, a Souvenir is the best tool, but who will bell the cat?

The only way and the best way is - to give the responsibility to ICYM, SPA, ICYM Ex-Members Association and Barkuronline web Manager's - they have the strengths and talents to embark on this project. Otherwise you'll end up with an 'opportunity of life time' as someone observed. May St. Peter show the way let us pray...............

Dear Friends,

It is a proud feeling that my questions are readily dispatched to you the Members of the Answering Panel.

Always, it is a patient wait, and every time your site is ready with some new thing - news section and Messages are the live wires. James Fernandes, Fr and Brother Andrade's regular contributions, Personality etc are very attractive and to an extent made up the vacuum created by shortage of articles from veteran Archie's pen.

The very objective of writing of this note is Kishoo - it happened other day I was going through the Padruchi chavi booklet - it was is translated work of Archie, on JPSequeira, yes Kishoo has done it perfectly, it is really superb, now the competition whether the original is good or this one by Kishoo in Konkani.

My feeling is this attitude must continue and many such articles to be translated in Chavi, there are many worthy contributions from James Fernandes, Fr. Tony, Fr. Henry, Archie, and so many others similarly those in Konkani to be in English same stalwarts mentioned above must translate works of Eric and others.

Of course few more matters there like details of Fr Gonsalves too need your focus.

Hope, this piece of observation will take your kind attention, by the way looking  for your answers,

Philiph Richard. 05/06/2004

Congratulations Fernandes Girls, Keep it up, all of us proud of your achievements and wish you best in future!

I had a look at 150 jubilee celebrations report, which is simpler than than the simplest!! The local leadership may be tired of various functions and kept this a low key affair. Any plans to celebrate this unique event on behalf of your site?

Philiph Richard, 28/05/2004

The 150th    year is not over yet. We can still salvage and celebrate the occasion. I too  strongly believe in not spending beyond ones’ means, especially on extravaganza, which turns out into a biological or non-bio-degradable waste! Instead of killing helpless pigs, and consuming alcohol with an excuse of celebration, I propose a Souvenir to commemorate the blessed 150 years of Barkur Parish’s painful past, and the rich present. (I wish it could have been richer, with college, hospital, or soup kitchens. But 50 years from today, I/we might be blamed for not making it richer! Nothing glorious is achieved without personal sacrifice, please! Do we deserve this blame?)

We have several articles in Barkuronline already, regarding the history of the Church, list of parish priests, their achievements, ICYM, list of nuns and priests produced by Barkur, etc. We can ask each parish family to provide the family information, education/profession, names of great grand parents to great young grand children, etc., using a questionnaire, limiting to one page or two, thus this information can be published in a souvenir to celebrate this 150th year. I would rather support a written record, than a thankless, forgotten by overnight pompous fiesta, at a cost of Rs.2000 per head, at a revolving 15th floor restaurant! The cost of the Souvenir can be obtained from advertisers, and willing donations from generous rich and the poor. In addition, a roadside monument/grotto/altar/water-fountain, as suggested by Archie will be quite appropriate too, provided funds are made available. Someone may donate 20’x20’ land! Any discussion folks? Any one willing to sacrifice her/his time, talent, and/or some money? “Alas, I tried!” My one drop in the bucket will never fill the bucket. With yours’ we Barkurians can!

James Fernandes, USA, 28/05/2004

A event like 150 years of this Church / Parish remembered with such lukewarm reactions by Barkurians, no I can't digest it, people back home so lethargic, no surely they are not inefficient, but what prompted them to ignore it not even making a mention of the same anywhere. Now-a-days people, looking for occasions and we are not focusing or capitalizing on them to mobilize recourses for the benefit of less privileged living in our Church. Is it the un-timely transfer of Rev. Fr. D' Souza at the crucial moment.. or any specific cause..., distant living parishioners wish to know?

Vincent D'Souza, 28/05/2004

There is a popular saying ' the Rome was not built by one day', so is the Barkur Church, I believe. Landmarks like 25 - 50 - 100 -150 years of fruitful existence are not only the occasions to thank God, in a special way for the favours received, but an excellent opportunity to start something a new, for the general benefit, for the society, rightly or meaningful way to commemorate the event. I do understand, in the year 1854 (or 1861?)the Barkur Church might have started in a small humble way, but developed to be a great parish since then. One of the unrealised projects of the 75th year of New Church Bldg. Jubilee - a 'prayer shrine' near Barkur Railway Station, would have been the best and the fitting Memorial to this landmark!! The Parish Council with the consent of newly joined Vicar Fr. Aranha, I hope will look into this matter. The historic Church, at a place of historic importance in the region, deserve a historic monument to preserve the memories afresh for yet another historic milestone!!

P. Archibald Furtado, Muscat, 27/05/2004

Less awareness or believing in the - simplicity is the best policy - may the spirit behind the Parish Council to have 150 Jubilee that too to combine the farewell party to retiring priest - the two different moods, say emotions clubbed in one! You had ICYM 25 Year so grand, had your priest's 75 year in a beautiful way,few years back celebrated 75 years of New church building, a couple of years ago, Bombay SPA celebrated 15th Annual Day..... but today the parish council opted for simple ways.... I feel this great year hardly comes once in lifetime, and we deliberately ignored it as casual one.... Any comments readers..... no I'm not for extravaganza or big shows, but only wonder at the different yardsticks, in the same parish, by same people, that's all!! With best wishes for a great jubilee,
