Mass Contact Programme held at Barkur
The mass
contact meeting-cum-harmony meet covering the people living in the jurisdiction
of Shiriyara, Yedtady, Barkur and Hanehally gram panchayats was held at Barkur
St Peter's church hall in the morning of Saturday June 27.
Sanction
letters pertaining to various government facilities under schemes like Sandhya
Suraksha, handicapped pension etc., were distributed at the meeting, to 132
beneficiaries by the dignitaries present.

president Shantaram Shetty, Shiriyara gram panchayat president Pradip Ballal,

Barkur, aged 83 years, Husband of Tereza Pasannha,
Father of Peter Archibald/Selma, Muscat, Ivy/Leslie Fernandes, KSA, Doris/Richard
D'Almeida, Harady, Brahmavar, Alfred/Shanthi passed away on 25/06/2009.
Funeral cortege leaves residence to the church of St.Peter, Barkur at
03.30 pm for mass followed burial.

Kala Milan, Mega Art Competition by ICYM Barkur
Indian Catholic Youth Movement, Barkur unit organized ‘Kala Milan 2009’, Udupi
District level painting and vegetable carving competition at Barkur .Many
participants from different parishes of Udupi District took part with great
enthusiasm.
Rev.Fr.R.C.M Aranha, Parish Priest of Church of St.Peter inaugurated the
programme by lighting the lamp. Internationally renowned artist and the former
president of the State Lalith Kala Academy, Mr.Peter Lewis, Barhmavar, and Mr.
William Pais, author of “ A land called South Canara” and the director of
Orchids Art Gallery, Mangalore were the guests of honor.
The painting competition declared open by Mr.Lewis by painting on the stage.
He encouraged all the young and the old to develop a taste for art. He opined
that by organizing competitions like Kala Milan, hidden talents can be
unearthed. Mr. William Pais, opened the vegetable carving competition by
cutting Valerie, a popular vegetable and spoke regarding the support for art
and artists and encouraged all.
The group from Sacred Heart Of Jesus Church, Kolalagiri won the first place in
Carving Competition, where as Christ King Church, Karkala group was selected as
the runner up for the same. St.Peter’Church, Pethri were the third place
winners and host group of St.Peter’s church, Barkur were satisfied with
consolation prize.
Karan Sequeira of Kallianpur Milagres won the first place in the Painting for
under 16 years group and Clarence Fernandes of Byndoor grabbed the same for
above 17 years category. Dafney D’Souza, Kallianpur , Milagres, Alister
D’Almeida, Barkur and Granel Lewis, Kallianpur, Milagres , under 16 years,
Gladston, D’Almeida, Barhmavar, Trinita Nazreth , Byndoor and James Lobo
Byndoor, above 17 yrears are other prize winners.
Mr.Sharath Alva, Lecturer,Udupi Institute of hotel and tourism science,
Mr.Gilson Mathew, Director of creative arts team which won first place in
Munich Street vegetable carving competition, Chef in Radisson hotel, were the
judges for vegetable carving. Mr.Nagaraj B.N, Art lecturer in Vidyaniketan
College,Udupi and Mr. Padmanabha Rao-Art director,Venkatagiri College,Saligrama,
served as the judges for painting competition.
Dr.Manoj Maxim D’Lima, Barkur, President of ICYM, Udupi Dist Youth Council and
welcomed the gathering and Bonaventure D’souza, President, ICYM barkur unit
delivered the vote of thanks. Franklin Fernandes compered the inaugural
function and Rolin Martis, Vice President was the master of ceremony of the
valedictory program.
Sr.Suma,Lady animator of Udupi District Youth Council, Rev.Fr.Victor D’souza,
Director of ICYM, Kallianpur varado were present during valedictory function
and gave the prizes. Some paintings of Mr.Peter Lewis were displayed at “Souharda”,
the parish hall of St.Peter’s Church, venue of the competitions.

Alwyn Andrade takes over as the
new President of 'The Expressions'
The members of "The
Expressions", a group of like minded people, got together for the sole
purpose of promoting talents, recently chose their new office bearers for the
next term. Multifaceted Alwyn Andrade, Barkur, one of the founder members of
the group and a dynamic leader, efficient organizer, photographer,dramatist,
actor par excellence and an entrepreneur in and around Brahmavar was elected as
the president of the group in meeting held at the residence Lancelot
D’Almeida. Eric Soans of Thuruthuthuthu fame retained his position of Secretary
fourth time in succession.

The handing over
ceremony to the new office bearers was held immediately after the elections.
All the members were present on the occasion.
Outgoing president Denis
Rodrigues handed over the charge to the new president Alwyn Andrade.
Accordingly, all the other outgoing office bearers handed over their charges to
the respective incoming office bearers. Outgoing President Denis Rodrigues in
his address expressed his gratitude to all the members of The Expressions for
extending him full support during his tenure.

for the next term and requested them to provide him full support to enable him
to discharge his duties effectively.
The election was
conducted by Lancelot D’Almeida, honorary member of the group in the presence

Dr.Sr.Consilia Fernades Memorial,
Dr.Gabriel Fernandes Gold Medal Instituted at Mangalore University.
Recently
Dr.Gabriel Fernandes, a
prominent scientist and Professor of Medicine, Microbiology and Physiology at
the University of Texas Health Science Center, SA, who was on short visit to
India, instituted Dr.Sr.Consilia Fernades Memorial, Dr.Gabriel Fernandes
Gold Medal in the memory of his sister , Late
Dr.Sr. Consilia Fernandes for
the 1st Rank holder of Master of Human Resource Development course
in Mangala Gangothri, Mangalore University. He donated Rs.50000 to the
university and Demand Draft was handed over to the Vice Chancellor Prof. K.M.
Kaveriappa of Mangalore University.
The installation of the award and
a guest lecture by Dr.Gabriel Fernandes was organized by the Department of
studies in Commerce, and Association of Mangala Gangothri Commerce Alumni (AMCA)
in the Old Senate Hall. Dr. Raghurama, Chairman of Department of studies in
commerce presided over the ceremony. Prof. Rajashekhar Hebbar, Principal of
Smt.Rukmini Shedthi Memorial, National Government First Grade College, and
Secretary of AMCA welcomed the gathering. Dr.Fernandes addressed the first and
second year students of M.Com, MHRD and MSM. He highlighted the importance of
education and research. He also introduced his Village To College Foundation.
Dr. Raghurama in his presidential
address gave a brief profile of the commerce department and its courses in the
university. He also thanked Dr.Gabriel Fernandes for establishing the gold
medal in the name of his beloved sister , late Dr.Sr.Comsilia who was a
well-known Gynecologist at Vijayamarie Hospital, Hyderabad.

student of M.Com conducted the proceedings and Mr.Prameshwara, Faculty of
Commerce proposed the vote of thanks.
Kavita Trust Poetry Session Enthralls Barkurians
The heavy
downpour of rains did not deter the large number of enthusiastic poetry lovers,
who had gathered on the vast portico of the age-old house of Rippon D'Souza,
S/O George D'Souza located near Moodhadu village on Sunday, June 7 on the banks
of River Sita at Barkur.
They were
listening to some of the finest Konkani poets, who had come from various places
of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts. The programme, which was held here
under the auspices of `Kavita Trust' for the second consecutive year, got
lavish praise from all the people.
Kishoo Barkur,
Secretary, Kavita Trust, welcomed the gathering at the beginning. Melvyn
Rodrigues, poet and President, Kavita Trust, presided over the poetry session.
Melvyn
Rodrigues in his presidential speech, expressed concern over the fact that
creative minds of the people have of late, been getting numb and jaded, because
of various gadgets of the modern world to which the people are geting attracted
and addicted to. He praised the poets of Barkur for keeping the spirit of
poetry alive and the general public for their whole-hearted support in
appreciating the creativity of the poets.
