Congested Barkur Town Needs Better Traffic Planning

Several dangerous curves lie on the Brahmavar-Barkur–Halady Road, near here. Heavy vehicles laden with road-building materials for four-lane conversion work are posing a threat to the general public.

A minor bridge was built across a rivulet by acquiring land in order to link the villages of Handady, Herady, Yedtady, Kallady, Shiriyara, and Gavali with Barkur.  Traffic was limited in the past, but as Barkur town grew the congestion necessitated the need for broadening the roads.

Roads threatened to collapse?

The heavy vehicles supplying materials for the national highway four-lane work with maximum tonnage are worsening the state of a road that is on the verge of collapse claim the locals.

Barkur – traffic congested town

Barkur is a small town where traffic was very limited.  Traffic in the recent past grown significantly and causes severe traffic bottlenecks since shops are situated close to the road that has to accommodate parking of auto rickshaws, cars, and other vehicles.  Hundreds of buses, trucks, and tankers are plying through Brahmavar via Hulikal Ghat towards Shimoga and Sagar since this route is the shortest.  Overnight passenger buses are plying on the Barkur-Saibarakatte – Jannady route.

Many culverts that were built in 1970, before building Barkur bridge, are in a deplorable state.  Although the elected representatives daily ply on this road, none of them has taken this issue seriously.  The families living on the edge of the road are severely affected as the heavy vehicles are likely to raze their houses.  The locals are urging the department to acquire their lands for broadening the roads in their neighbourhood.

“If the Barkur Kelapete is developed, traffic will improve on the national highway,” says Koodli Satyanarayan Udupa.

“If the outskirts of Barkur town are developed, it will improve traffic,” says Ganesh Kunder.

“Several memorandums were presented to the district administration for broadening roads in Barkur town.  If the works are further delayed, the locals will stage a united struggle,” says Satish Poojary Barkur.

“The congestion in Barkur town stresses the need for undertaking widening works of roads,” says Satish Shetty Yedtady.

Little Rock Principal's Book ‘Soliloquies of a Principal’ Released

A book by Prof Mathew C Ninan, principal of Little Rock Indian School, Brahmavar was released by Dr  K Ramnarayan, vice chancellor of Manipal University.

The book titled “Soliloquies of a Principal” is in fact a compendium of select articles on school education written by Prof Mathew C Ninan.

Dr. Ramnarayan while releasing the book lauded the efforts of principal Ninan in penning down his insightful thoughts, which are both timely and timeless. He said they were timely because schools today needed a sense of direction and purpose as outlined in the book. They are timeless because of the enduring value of the thoughts embedded in the book. He also appreciated the ‘tremendous conviction and astounding clarity’ of the author.

James Varghese, trustee who presided over the programme received the first copy of the book and said Prof Ninan’s commitment to education and his caring attitude towards the staff and students are his most striking qualities. This is how Little Rock became a unique school, the school with a difference, he noted.

In his remarks Prof, Ninan said his most important concern about school education has always been the welfare of children. He said Little Rock adopted the slogan “every child matters’ for this reason. Now he wants to propagate the theme “school is for children”. Usually in practice school is for teachers. We need to change this perception, and focus on children. I would be most gratified if the book influences more schools and teachers in this direction, he said.

Arjun Raghunath, the topper of Class XII and his parents were felicitated on the occasion. Lali Mathew, vice principal who presented the achievements of Arjun said his 98% in Class X and 97.4% in Class XII are records in the history of Little Rock.

The vice chancellor felicitated Prof Rahgunath Rudran and  Anita Rahgunath, parents of Arjun.
