ICYM celebrates Patron's Feast

After completion of one more successful year - 2003, the members of ICYM Barkur celebrated the Patron's Feast (Feast of Don Bosco) on Sunday, 25^th  January. After the Thanks Giving Mass a get together of members along with well-wishers and leader of the Parish was organised. Mrs. Eugene Quadros complimented the youth leaders for their splendid performance and wished them a better future. Rev. Fr. Sylvester D'Souza briefed the life style of St. Don Bosco  and asked the youth to follow him. Rev. Fr. Wilfred D'Souza was present during the occasion.                  

President of ICYM Mr. Alwyn D'Almeida welcomed the gathering and Miss Sabitha Mascarenhas, Secretary proposed vote of thanks.

FOUNDATION STONE LAID  - FOR RENOVATION OF KULA MAHASTREE AMMA TEMPLE, AT BENNE KUDRU – BARKUR.

You must have read in this space, BARKUR a center of religious activities for most of the Hindu Communities of D.K. and Udupi Districts.

One such temple situated at Benne Kudru, KULA MAHASTREE AMMA TEMPLE. This Garodi have a history of more than 1000 years, and Fishermen Community of Coastal Karnataka, venerate the deity, specially with pomp and splendor during the three day celebration usually falling during the second week of December every year. Fishing activities will come to a halt for three days every year, as mark of respect!

Billava’s too respect the place, and everyday devotees pay visit to this holy place. Once the Bridge was constructed, it has dwindled and the shrine attracts thousands every year.

Today, on 23^rd January, 04, at 11.00 am Shri Vidyadeesha Swamjee of Phalimar Mutt, Udupi, laid the foundation stone for the to be renovated Temple at the cost of 1.5 Crores, planned to be ready by May this year.

Among others the function was graced by the presence of major political / religious leaders – Minister Vasnth Salian, Mr. Vinaya Kumar Sorake, M.P., Mr Jaya Prakash Hegde, Mr U.R.Sabhapathi, MLA’s, Dr. V.S.Achar, MLC etc

Eye Hospital of Lions Club

Charmakki Narayana Shetty Memorial Lions Eye Hospital at Kota, a dream project built by Lions Trust For Services and Charities, sponsored by Lions Club, Brhamavar-Barkur was inaugurated on 18^th January  at 10 am.

Dr. N . Seetharama Shetty, Chairman, Charmakki Narayana Shetty Trust, Bangalore inaugurated the hospital in a function presided over by MJF Ln. H. S. Manjappa, District Governor, Lions Dist. 324-D4.

Sri S. R. Umashankar, IAS,  DC, Udupi Dist, Dr.B.M. Hegde, Dist. Health and family welfare officer, Dr. P. Mahabaleshwar Mayya of Mayya Nursing Home Bangalore , Ln. Dr. S. Chandrashekar Shetty , Ex-V.C. Rajiv Gandhi Medical University, Bangalore , Dr.Bhujaga Shetty, Director, Narayana Nethralaya, Bangalore,  Dr. S. Sunderram Shetty, Chairman, Globe Eye Foundation, Bangalore were the guests of honour at the function.

Ln. A. Sadashiva Hegde, President, Lions Club, Brahamavar-Barkur and MJF Ln. Jagajjevandas Shetty, President , Lions Trust for Services and Charities were present at the occasion.

Parish Bulletin released

The Parish bulletin of St.Peter's Church,Barkur, Perch Chavi, Christmas special issue, sponsored by St. Peter’s Association (Barkur) Mumbai , is released on 18^th January after the Sunday Mass , in a simple ceremony held at the church. The same will be posted to all Barkurians spread around the globe said the editor Mr. Eric Soans and he also requested to those who are not receiving the copy of the bulletin to register their postal address at the church office.

A fitting Welcome to a Historical City

The recently inaugurated  Swagatha Gopura (Welcome Tower) for Barkur , bulit near  the AIR Station at Brahmavar (off NH 17)by the Vishwakarama community is indeed a fitting welcome for the  visitors to the historical Barkur.

One and half month old Baby Novia Fernandes is the fifth generation child in the family of Mrs.Lucy Lobo, Hosala aged 89 years.

Prize distribution for Crib winners.

The annual crib competition prize distribution was held at Barkur church after the  Sunday mass.    Rev. Fr. Tony Andrade, Parish Priest , St. Thomas the Apostle church St. Paul, MN (USA), who is currently on vacation at the native place handed over the rolling shield along with the trophy to Sydney John Lewis ,Bennekudru,  the first prize winner of the competition. Second prize was bagged by Lucy Gonsalves, Halekody and the third place is shared by Kelron Pais Kachhur and Elroy D’Almeida , Halekody. All other ward level winners were also got their prizes from Fr. Tony.

The prizes were sponsored with the help of ICYM Silver Jubilee Memorial fund installed by Mr. Peter Archibald Furtado, Muscat.

Roshan bags the bronze medal in power lifting.

Roshan Lobo, Barkur got the bronze medal in the Karnataka State Level Power Lifting Competition in the 65 KG section, at Davanagere.

Roshan Lobo is the son of Mrs. Philomena and Mr. Charles Lobo, Hosala, Barkur is a student of Second year B.Com at Milagres College Kallianpur in undergoing training with Mr. Augustine Arun Dias, Barkur, Physical Director at Milagres College who was selected as the best physical director at the university level sometime back.
