Latest on Barkur Bridge
K. Jayaprakash Hegde, MLA, said on Friday that Rs. 1 crore had
been released for the repair of the Barkur bridge in the district.
In a press release issued here, Mr. Hegde said the Revenue
Department had released a grant of Rs.1 crore for the
reconstruction of the damaged slabs of the bridge at Barkur and
for the construction of a diversion road.
The money had been released from the Rural Road Development Fund.
The Barkur bridge collapsed in July mainly on account of lorries
overloaded with manganese ore using the road. The collapse of the
bridge led to districtwide protests against the movement of
overloaded lorries.
The closure of the bridge has inconvenienced the people of Barkur
and Brahmavar
Cultural
Feast At Kallianpur
Catholic Sabha, Kallianpur Varado organised a varado level
cultural programme on Canara Konkani Cultural Heritage. A number
of programmes were staged by the parishes in the Varado and
Barkur unit presented a programme on "Annual Feast".
About 35 people took part in the 30 minutes programme. Mr Patrick
D'Silva, President led the team and the programme was highly
appriciated by the gathering.

Barkurians at Mumbai get together for a Wilfy Nite.
The 16th year Annual Get-together of St.Peter’s
Association (Barkur) Mumbai was held recently at Shri Bhaaidas
Auditorium, Ville Parle (West) Mumbai on 12th
November. Young Entrepreneur Mr. Ronald Goveas was the chief
guest of the occasion. Speaking at the function he stressed that
the love of the language of the Konkanni speaking people has
catapulted the language as an ideal language and all should
support the people working for the cause of the language.
Rev. Fr. Cyprian Pais, Entrepreneurs Mr. Herald Rebello, Mr.
Antony Francis, Mrs. Lilly Mary Goveas, Mr. Alwyn Rasquinha,
Mulund, Mr.Salvadore D’Souza, Mrs. Anrita Buthello, Mr. Edwin
Sequeira, Mr. Henry D’Silva, Surathkal, Mr. Wilfy Rebimbus, Mrs.
Meena Rebimbus were the other guests.
Mr. Felix Barnes, Ex-President, Mr. Richard Carvalho, Vice
President, Mr. Eric Carvalho and others were present on the stage.
President Mr. Henry Roche welcomed the gathering and Mrs. Ida
Roche introduced the guests. General Secretary Mr. Ivan Rebello
conducted the proceedings of the stage programme and Mr. Leslie
Rego took the reigns of the entertainment programme “Wilfy Nite”
that followed. Mrs. Renny Suares proposed the vote of thanks.
After a gap of nearly 7 years, Konkani music lovers from Mumbai
were once again were treated to the golden voice of Konkan
Kogul Wilfy Rebimbus, Meena along with their music troupe. A
perfect blend of foot-tapping music , electrifying dances and rip
roaring comedy took the audience for a joyride. The show
was a mega hit had a jam-packed audience and many people had to go
back disappointed without being able to buy the entrance tickets.

Udupi Taluk Sports
Meet At Barkur
National
Pre University College, Barkur hosted the Sports Meet for Udupi
Taluk North Zone Higher Primary and High School students as well
as
Pre
University students. These 2 sports meets were held from November
4, 2004 to November 6 (3 days). Udupi North Zone Higher Primary
and High school students’ sports meet was inaugurated on November
4 by Mr. Vittaldas Bannanje, B.E.O., Udupi Taluk Zone, in a
function held at B.UmaShankar Shetty Memorial Playground, National
PU College Barkur. The sports flag was hoisted by Mr. Raju Poojari,
Physical Education Organiser, Udupi North zone. The retired
Physical Education teacher, National PU college, Barkur Sri B.
Laxman Bhandary lighted the lamp of the meet. He was one of the
chief guests in the inaugural session. Sri V. L. Roche, President,
Barkur Vidhyabhivardhini Sangha(Rgd) Barkur was the chairperson.
Vittaldas Bannanje released a pair of white doves into the sky
and declared the meet open.
Long jump, high jump, triple jump, throws like Hammer-throw,
javelin throw, discuss throw, shot put, and race were being
conducted and the competitors took part in all the activities in
the sporting spirit.
In the evening on Nov 5, the valedictory session was held. Sri
Shantharam Shetty, Vice President, Barkur Vidhyabhivardhini
Sangha(Rgd) Barkur chaired the occasion. The valedictory speech
was delivered by Mr. B. Seetharam Shetty Correspondent National PU
College, Barkur. The lamp was put out by Narasimha Kudva, Manager.
Corporation Bank, Herdai. All the teachers and student volunteers
worked to see that all the physical arrangements were perfectly
made. Food was given to the athletes by the host institution.
Nearly 1200 athletes took part in the meet. They came from 40 plus
different schools of Udupi North zone.
Perdoor High School, Perdoor won the overall championship in the
meet.
Nov-6, Udupi Taluk North zone PU college student’s meet:
Pre University College Students’ Athletic meet was declared open
by Shri B. Bhujanga Shetty , member of the Udupi Jilla Panchayth
by releasing the white doves. Shri H. N. Bhojraj Shetty ,
President, Old Students association was the predisent and Shri .
B. Kasim , President, Parent Teachers Association was the chief
guest on the occasion.
Various competitions were held through out the whole day and the
participants actively took part in the days events.
Valedictory:
Mr. L.M.Kanade, Deputy Director, Pre-University Department, Udupi
district was the chairperson. Dr.N.C.Kalkur delivered the
valedictory speech. Rajashekhar Hebbar, Principal Smt Rukmini
Shedthi Memorial National Government first
Grade College, Barkur was the chief guest.
Trophies, medals and other prizes were given away in the
valedictiary function. These prizes were sponsored by B.D
Shetty,(Industrialist Mumbai), Dhrmavaram Auditorium Brahmavar.

First Holy Communion at Barkur.
16 children from Barkur Parish were administered the Holy
Sacrament of Communion on Sunday, 7th November at
St.Peter’s Church . The high mass was concelebrated by Rev. Fr.
Remigeous Aranha and Rev. Fr. Antony Fernandes.

Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Coorg District level athletic meet
The
Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Coorg District level athletic meet
with a view to prepare international standard athletes is being
jointly organized , under the banner of SMS College Brahmavar, at
SMS Sports Ground from November 26th to November 28th.
SMS College is presenting this sports meet as a part of its Silver
Jubilee celebrations, with the co-organisation with Udupi District
Amateur Athletic Association, Old Students Association and
Bangalore Sports Club, as informed by Mr. Jayaprakash Hegde,
Chairman of this sports meet at a press conference.
There will be 5 levels of competitions including boys, girls, men
and women of different age groups and it’s anticipated the
participation of more than 3000 athletes in this meet. To
encourage the contestants there will cash rewards along with
medals for the winners.
It’s for the first time that this kind of sports meet is being
organized in the rural area and the organizers have left no stone
unturned for its success at an estimated expense of Rs.10 lakhs.
Winners of the Athletic meet will have a chance to participate in
the state level athletic meet to be held at
Bangalore from December 2nd. There will be cash rewards
for the best performance is the march fast and best band group.

proved it yet again by winning the Championship in the State Level
Rural IT Quiz , held at
Bangalore.
Samarth Kudalkar and Darryl Lewis from
Little Rock Indian School, Brahmavar came out in flying colours at
the Palace Grounds, Bangalore in the final rounds of the quiz
contest held as the part of the popular Information Technology
Fest “Bangalore IT.Com-2004”
PES Pre University College, Mandya and PDJ Pre University College
Bijapur bagged the second and third place respectively.
There were total 61,000 students participated in the various
preliminary rounds held in the past few days and total 8 teams
from the state were qualified for the final rounds.
Samarth and Darryl received a trophy and a scholarship of
Rs.50,000. Second and third place winners received the trophies
and scholarships of Rs.30,000 and Rs. 20,000. All the finalists
received a camera each from the main sponsors TCS and won
Rs.14,000 each.
